Finally, there are other people.
Awesome!

Predicktion
Megan will be helped by them, while they live in comfort. After a while the mountain the other people will live on will start bellowing acrid smoke, forcing the other people to sacrifice Quegan to their volcano god. This god isn't pleased with their offering and kills all the other people. Thus ends Time.

Just wanted to say, though, Thanks! to mscha for 100post wishes and cake - though in reality this post or my next one will really be my Time centipost due to earlier posts in other threads.

Well this is exciting. We got our first repeat. Beanie repeated the last two words of Speech 2 (which was probably "fetch thing" as some predicted at the time and now this is "thing").

edit: oops, I mean Speech 3

Far-too-easy prediction: Megan tries to repeat that word (expect the same word, but messy and with some symbols mixed up or replaced with Latin letters), and/or points to the thing and says 'bandage'.

So we now know the first word of the third speech is a verb for Get or Fetch. And the final two words are probably the noun for the healing bandage or whatever it is. The two words are probably an adjective followed by a noun but for all we know it could be the other way around.

Even if we don't believe that GLR has invented an own language here - it would be hard enough if he took an existing one for which he has a translating mechanism (GLR knows the language, GLR knows someone who knows the language; googIe provides a gui, or... whatever) and applies a substitution algorithm for the graphemes.

With this, even SwedishtlhIngan is in scope.

Or "We need...", or "In my backpack you will find...", or even "You!..." or "[Name of the one that should fetch],..."
In general all we know is that it is something that will create the idea that the one you are speaking to should fetch that which the rest of the sentence refers to.

Great work by all the linguists!

anabatica wrote:Well this is exciting. We got our first repeat. Beanie repeated the last two words of Speech 3 (which was probably "fetch thing" as some predicted at the time and now this is "thing").
I fixed the speech numbering in the quote (already edited by anabatica) for clarity.

I think you're right with your translation. Thus, I conclude that the "-" above the last character is definitely a period, which means that "°" might well be a question mark.
Which brings me to my next point: I feel that the approach of grouping the characters and speculating about diacrits denoting vowels will be fruitful.
However, we shouldn't neglect frequency analyses. For example, subjecting the Latin alphabet to a grouping similar to BlitzGirl's grouping of the Beanish characters might result in something like this (the assignment of some characters, like U, J, or K, may be debated):

The hills and valleys: AMNUVWXY
The sticks with curves: BDPR
The circulars: CGOQ
The rectangulars: EFHIJLT
The kay: K
The snakes: SZ

I don't know whether this might be helpful do decode English, or any other language written with Latin characters.
Wait on.

Warm wishes and returned greetings, BlitzGirl, reigning queen of the OTT. Though I do not currently have the Time nor the munitions for a full blitz, I have had a lot of Ketchup lately and found it to my liking.

And greetings to everyone.

As a lowly newcomer, may I humbly request an update to the wiki's glossary? The transition from Outsider is a hard one, but so far worth the effort.
Perhaps our jargon needs a name itself. Maybe Time-ish. Or Timese?

Good point. I've been referring to it as Hash-house outside the OTT, but that might be too obscure or provincial (it's a term for the jargon of "waiters" associated with "roadside America" culture).

Good mornix! Molpy up!

@Kieryn I think I nearly woke up my wife, laughing.

@Stereo I like what you did with your analysis. I think you are correct about the horizontal line at the end, and the small circle (degree-ish symbol) being punctuation, although I too think it may be the other way around.

I doubt I will be able to add much more to the discussion. Work todip shall be frantic, as I tie up loose ends to make sure that not too many issues are outstanding before I leave. And once home, I have final prep to do for the trip. Then I shall be gone for 6 dips. Why, oh GLR, did you have to introduce a new language now? Because it is your ineffable will, that is why. So be it. I look forward to further analysis. This is all very exciting!

Just my thoughts on the Beanish font. The repeated string is most interesting thing I've found (marked in cyan). Splitting it up this way gives an alphabet of (approximate) 16 symbols + 6 quarter-circles (top/bottom and quadrants) + the dot.

I'm seriously out of my league here, but you bring some interesting ideas.

Posted whilst ketchuping about 8 NP, so I fully expect this ridiculous speculation about the Beanielang to be pre-Ninja'd.

We should take a look at the appendices to LoTR. He created about a quadrillion character sets for use by the various species proliferating across his books.

Actually my impression of the BeanieLady's speech is that it looks exactly like a profile of a nose. Which probably is of absolutely no help in translating their language.
