While I like the idea of it being a Mario flag in front of the castle of the Bearded One, it may be that this is a warning flag of another attack- Beware of the Tiger.

If this really is taking place in the distant future, we should see some evidence of advanced technology eventually.

Prediction: we will see such evidence when they reach the cake4.

They would indeed. Apparently WETA has had the rights for some time, but in 2009 Peter Jackson expressed interest in directing them. If they ever do get made I will be extremely pleased.

Maybe GLR just forgot to turn on cloth/foliage simulation. It is quite expensive to render, after all. I mean, we're getting a dismal framerate as it is!

I'm hoping they get to the flag, one of the Beanies flicks a hidden switch, and the until-now invisibly-cloaked cake pyramid shimmers into view directly in front of them. Whereupon La Petite emerges with a fake beard and asks them why they took so long.

Well, Cuegan knows what wind is, so there must be some somewhere in this world. They mentioned that it must be windier back around the sand dunes, I think.

I wondered who these Beanies were and what they were up to when Cuegan arrived. Showing Cuegan the survey map as opposed to a regular map indicated that they are (Duh!) a survey team and that was the map they've produced. Perhaps their beanies are an accroutrement of their occupation. Unless they're mapping out a new subdivision, they're not from the area and are creating maps for future exploration. It looks like they may be part of an advance team for others who are planning to move into the area (from the other side of the mountain?). I doubt that they're the ones that built the grapevine or cabin as a survey would move forward, away from the mountain, not from the furthest point out and back. Beard guy and the mastaba are probably just the survey home base and their civilization is a lot further away. Cuegan's trek may have a lONG way to go.

I am in awe of people who can pull this off with such apparent ease and aplomb.
Every time I try to use something like the Gimp and similar I end up tearing my hair out in frustration.

The process to do such an animation is roughly two-step:

* Cut out the scene you want, from all the relevant frames. Save them as gif-pictures.
I suggest irfanview for this step.
It has a batchmode where you can crop+resize a number of pictures in one go.

* Feed them into some gif-animation-making-software, e.g. Animake or Giftedmotion.
There are many places that offer to create such gifs online, e.g. http://makeagif.com
