Looks like we have a low wooden wall around the city and beanie is about to open the gate.

The roof looks like it may have a wire around the edge with a vine or plant growing on it. More grapevines maybe. And yeah wonder what molpy the little girl is running to show to hatman.

I think we established with LaPetite that they were too big for kids. But Cuegan might be young adults, or teenagers.

Stylish Hat over there looks to be about Cueball's size, but that might change if xe stands up.

Oh wow this is awesome. Very excited to see what awaits beyond the fence, and how the OTC might develop to convey a situation more complex than a handful of characters moving across a horizontal plane. Will the Beanies keep their beanies on now that they're not roughing it at the survey site any more? Will all the adult characters in Beantown have different style hats, and all the children different minimal hairstyles?

It occurs to me that the number of different characters we get to see (or at least are able to identify) will be limited to the number that can be visually distinguished from each other. So as the story grows more complicated, it might become essential to provide more distinguishing features. Imagine if they all started to slowly develop faces! In one frame they could all have faint lines around the nose area, then over the next few frames gradually developing eyes, mouths, ears ...

Also is it just me or does that house-type structure look a bit wonky?

On the roof, is my guess. Because that's where I'd want to go! It looks like fun. :)

Looks like Beanie-2 stayed back to usher the rest of Cuebeagan into the city. Other than that, they seem to have kept their order.

I figured the kids ran inside, away from the strange new people. Mine do the same.

The chest-with-lid to the left of the vege garden looks a lot like the food cache/washing up bucket back at the survey tower... but confusingly, also a lot like the chimney-esque thing on top of the small structure by the gate.

And could that be a Beanish symbol on the gate?

Welcome rootlake! Your thoughts have been mirrored a few times already with many people guessing theodolite when the towers showed up. And it sure looks to me like the survey map is confirmed.

Some educated guesses can be made, based on the writing system. The script is composed of basic radical shapes (2 3 7, what look like open 9s, each with multiple rotations), elaborated by a small set of diacritics (- = º ̯ ’ ‘), and different stroke onsets/flourishes (a perpendicular line, a curl, etc.). It looks like a highly featural system, like Hangul, and in all probability is a syllabary or an abugida, with different diacritics indicating different vowels, or similar qualities. It's further reinforced by the way different words like "water" sometimes end with the same radical, but an altered diacritic (first with -, then with =; as "sea" it appears with a º). I'm guessing it's an inflectional language, and the different diacritics represent different vowel endings.

If the language isn't basically CV in its phonology, though, diacritics could also represent syllable codas, and the difference in endings could be consonantal, like in English "foe/foes". I would love a transcription of even just a few words--given the structure of the script, it might be possible to deduce most of the language's phonology from a relatively small sample.

And welcome Tanadrin! Good to have another linguist on board. I'm sure we could make some educated guesses on the pronunciation but I don't know how easy GLR will have made it for us. But at least it should be fun to try anyway.

I wonder if this is the man who speaks in many tongues. The person the Beanies drew looked like he had manes, so it's probably a (very) bearded man. Maybe he just had a shave.

Hi all,

Just a quick blindpost... Right now I'm pretty much off the grid. The place I'm staying until next saturday has *gasp* no wifi. Right now I'm at a coffee shop using their wifi to actually catch up on some work, but of course I had to quickly check the OTC. Seems like they've finally arrived where they were going... looks like some very exciting and informative times are afoot. The map was fascinating... I'm sure you've all been discussing the implications it may have with edfel's map.

I will definitely check in again tomorrow but after that it might be saturday before I come online again. This is weird for me... I grew up like this with no internet, but I've not been without it for at least 8 years... it seems very strange and backwards. I'm sure I'll be used to it again by the end of the week though :-)

Happy waiting!

Neat!

This frame shows that Cuegan know the concept of cities. I think that's interesting. Tents and villages may occur basically everywhere and at almost all times (e.g., prehistoric to post-apocalyptic), but cities need some time to develop, and they must be supported by a good infrastructure both within the city itself and from its surroundings.

When you use the forum to upload an image it does this stupid preview mode and will not show the image like a normal image. To work around this their is a trick where you can make the preview image inline and then hide it in a spoiler so it won't be obvious and visible. Then you preview your post and find the address of the image that the preview uses and post a img tag image to that address so we see the full image where you want it at the top of your post. Because the spoiler contents is just the same as the full image at the top it is not really needed and is redundant. But if you take it out an annoying preview you don't want will show up again. It's now a good place to hid cute redundakitties as well now.

Also on topic. My guess is that the new word is the name of this city. Could be something like "welcome" except the gesture with his arm seems to me to mean this is Blah.

Interesting - that one pixel is still there in the first two city frames (has not been fixed yet), but it is absent from the current newpix.

Lawsome wrote:What is the purpouse of the "redundant" spoilers?

Long story - I used to use an outside image hosting site to upload pictures, but some of the readers of the thread could not see the images because their work filters were snagging on them. So I decided to make sure that anyone able to read the thread would also be able to see the images, which meant uploading attachments directly into the posts. The problem with this is that the uploaded attachments sometimes render oddly (particularly if they're gifs) and cannot be quoted directly. To sidestep those issues, I copy the direct url for the image from the attachment, wrap that in image tags, and put it in my post. Voila, visible, quotable, image.

The one hangup of this convoluted method is that the wonky attachment still has to be in the post somewhere. So I usually place it inline and hide it with a spoiler tag. To save people the trouble of clicking just to see a redundant image, I label the spoiler "redundant." But I know that some people (myself included) like to check all the spoiler tags in this thread just to make sure they've read it all, so I started putting little lolcat easter eggs (a.k.a. "redundakitties") in my redundant spoilers. And that's the whole crazy story. :D

And it's a ninja'd story as well. Good show. Image

Because sometimes images on sites like imgur won't show, so another version is uploaded directly to the forum. See also: http://xkcd-time.wikia.com/wiki/Glossary#Redundakitty

edit: ninjad twice.

Why, oh why, does the man on the box expand? Is he about to explode?
The past is full of traps, charms and mirages, but if you just keep up with with what you are doing it will all be fine.

Why thank you! I'll have to share it with Hells Doggies, and also with my spousal molpy (34 heretical years as of Bastille Day).
(BTW for those paying close attention: don't share real life chocolate with real life dogs, as some of them will have a rather bad reaction to it)

But no. Does it show a random earlier scene if no updates are available? Or maybe it was just magically granting my earlier wish to see the starfield, in which case that would be quite an impressive feature :D (and it did look amazing, just as I thought it would).

I changed the default frame when no internet connection is available to one of the night frames, for the sole reason that they are pretty. ;)

Been busy at the incredible Australasian Clarinet & Sax Conference for three days, and just finished ketchuping 30 pages or so!
Firstly, city, amazing! To me it looks quite European (not that that may have much stock in 11000 years, if that's the case), and particularly Mediterranean. I immediately thought 'Dutch' upon seeing the wowterful hat, but I have no idea why (mscha, please explain?)

Anyway, some bits of regular ketchup, @fhorn, @cellocgw, @rjs, @yappobiscuits

See "lazy, elderly, music major," above.) (perhaps I could cram some more excuses into that sentence if I weren't lazy)

Just out of interest, what instrument/area of study (education, compostion, etc)?

I tend to (wrongly) consider those to be one and the same

You mean they're not the same? IS there such a thing as a "neutral" accent? I can't possibly imagine how any accent could sound neutral to EVERYONE...

A friend of mine does a lot of voice acting and she has a few neutral accents that she does; mid Atlantic, mid Pacific and the one she calls neutral is somewhere between SoCal, E. Australian, NZ, S. African and various southern British variants... So no, I don't think neutral and "mine" are quite the same thing.

I disagree, I don't think there can be anything like an objective neutral accent, because the accents we speak and grow up with are neutral and sound completely uninflected to us. Your friend may mix some accents, but it still cannot really sound neutral, and would still be heard differently dependent on where the listener comes from- to me, an Australian, it would still sound accented, as more British/US/South African.
On a related note, Blitzgirl's example of speaking the OTC dialogue sounded weird to me, because I don't imagine Cuegan with an American accent!

Now I kinda want to see a remake of the whole OTC with Megball as otters...

Now, this reminds me of one of the Letters from a Nut by 'Ted L. Nancy', let me see if I can find it... ah, here: https://julie-cfahs.wikispaces.com/file/view/Letters+from+a+Nut. Page 6 of the pdf. :D

Good eye - that definitely looks like a Image to me (or perhaps a 2 with a hook on it, like Image ), which also happens to start the Beanish word used by Beanie-3.
