Nah, there's only so much one mscha can do when faced with a crazywave!

I don't think the leader of that pack is LaPetite; the proportions seem off. But it's difficult to tell when they're drawn so riverish.

Instant zoom. LaPetite is leading the 40-bunch, I presume. Then we have CircleHead, GenericHairDude, AnotherWoman, Little Pete and GenericHatGuy.

To the other comics to search for their appearances!

How do you SEE that? I can't see the kind of detail on my screen to see they have bags. (Maybe I need new glasses.)

I make this frame #2, since Cueball yelled to them last frame. Which started communication, in my (non-pope) opinion.

If that bags are some woven material (possibly like canvas) then a wax treatment would keep them water repellent for quite some time. If they are leather, and worn smooth, then same applies.

Goodness Megan, please keep it together. Really, you two.

I am on edge enough as it is with everything going on in the Outside. The last thing I need is to worry about one of Cuegan getting swept away.

But is she carrying her original bag? Remember, after Cueball lost his bag to the kitty, it was replaced by the Beanies.

Edit: ninja'd. Things are happening too fast. By the time I respond on one page, another two have popped up.

Taking one heck of a chance. They look to be knee deep in the water. Six inches of moving water will knock you off your feet, one foot will float many cars, two feet will sweep a SUV away.

The leader of the Forty has the same height as Megan, pixel-wise. But he/she/xe has a hat. Though Megan has more presumably more hair too.

Anyway it doesn't look like a béret. More like a policeman hat, in fact.

I know, heavily ninja'd, but here's my version of the ENHANCEment. (It'd be a shame to let it go to waste.)

10× enlarged, but for the rest very similar to BlitzGirl's version.
Maybe the person in front is LaPetite after all. But then the GLR messed up his scale, I think...

Officer's hat was my first thought as well. Image Here, let me smush mscha's images together just for fun:

Image

The hat that the "officer" is wearing seems to have sharper angles than LaPetite's, and I find it difficult to believe that GLR would make such an egregious size-mustard. Hopefully we get to zoom in again some TIme soon; I'd like to see the Forty up close. :)

Scorbut wrote:Hi all !

For my first post here, I will probably miss a lot of things and insult most of the traditions that seem to be running on the OTT. For my defense, I didn't started reading it since the beginning (even though I'm following the OTC since - almost - the beginning), so I'm not sure if there is something I should do about ketchup, or a cake, or a papal decree, or anything. I just wanted to answer to this :

BlitzGirl wrote: This reminds me of something I learned in one of my classes, though I can't for the life of me remember which class, or even what yip I learned it. In cultures that read left-to-right, there is a tendency to give objects traveling left-to-right across a field of view more positive associations: moving forward, progressing, heading the correct way. Objects moving right-to-left, or against-the-grain, are more apt to be viewed with suspicion or a sense of wrongness.

Filmmakers sometimes take advantage of this bias in the movement of characters and play that off of the plot. Heroes will more often enter from the left side of the frame and move right. A character that travels right-to-left across the frame, with the against-the-grain eeriness, creates a subconscious tension in the minds of the viewing audience.

I have a sneaking suspicion that GLR knows this theory. I also have a sneaking suspicion that there is a real name for this phenomenon, but I have forgotten it if ever I learned it.

The question interested me, so I did a quick research, and found that : "The effect of left-right reversal on film: Watching Kurosawa reversed" in the journal i-perception (I can't put the adress here, seems to cause my message to be considered as a spam).

This is a paper published in 2011, as far as I understand, talking about having people looking at mirror-reversed films, and trying to see what happens. I just had a quick glance inside the paper, and if the idea is interesting, the statistics seem to be quite weak (but, well, the idea is interesting - it was probably worth doing it). Nevertheless, the authors do not seem to be aware to the theory you are referring to (the left-to-right vs right-to-left movements), and it actually sounds like more of a legend about psychology of people looking at movies than an actual true phenomenon. Do you think you could try to remember some more information about that to see if we are able to find a more precise description of it ?

And, by the way, I'm not a native English speaker, so maybe my question is silly, but why are papal decrees questions ? Shouldn't they be, well, decrees ?

To vote just quote the first few lines and state the combination you like best
This time we have them all combined into pairs and currently have 10 versions you can listen to.
They are in video form and have the OTC frames sequenced in as well so you get to see how the voices fit with it.

My vote goes for C6M3.

I find several things interesting about this. First, in some cases, the very things I especially liked about people's voices in the first round turned out to be a detriment in the second round (including aspects of my own voice), and some of the things that didn't work for me the first time were assets in the second round. Second, the votes seem to cluster quite strongly in both cases. The second thing tells me that, Condorcet voting or not, the winner is clear, but the first thing tells me that preferences, while well defined, are not stable. A third round, with a different part of the script, may well produce a different set of landslide winners.

We're going to need voices for Rosetta and the Beanies and the Forty too.

It might be interesting to actually record alternate casts, and give individual viewers the opportunity to experience multiple Cuegans and multiple Megans.

I'll add my "uh-oh" to the rest of the chorus. Maybe they went on ahead? (I'm afraid they were left behind...)

And pix #3 of communication, for the pool...

I'm the friend he's talking about. Just registered on the forums. I read xkcd regularly but haven't kept up to date with this particular comic since it started.

Commencing blitz in 3, 2, 1, ...

Good luck on your quest, good OTTer...you will be with us in TIME.

You must say your goodbyes from here. You cannot go back down into the abyss. For you have walked too far and now there is no more time to walk. The ocean is coming.
Lemonade? ...Aww, ok.

Taking one heck of a chance. They look to be knee deep in the water. Six inches of moving water will knock you off your feet, one foot will float many cars, two feet will sweep a SUV away.

Well, they're already taking a heck of a chance going thousands of meters down into a basin that's about to be inundated. The main hazard at that moment was their bags (and the precious maps) getting wet.

Flood awareness is all well and good but the idea is to get you assuming the worst case for your safety, so there's some hype in it. Six inches can knock you off your feet if it's moving really fast, as flood water can be. But that isn't the case with all moving water everywhere. Here, the water is moving more like a normal running stream at a few mph. "I can feel the current" (which implies the current isn't very visible at the surface) at the shallow side and "It's surprisingly strong" when knee-deep. That sounds more like a normal running stream, of which I've waded across many, up to hip deep. It can kill you if you're alone, you fall down, hit your head on a rock, and drown while unconscious. It's not going to sweep you miles away, break you in half over a stone bench, bash you senseless with floating debris, or anything like that, if you don't panic. Just crawl toward the shallows and stand back up.

Newpic! Sticking to the important things, our Megan is. (So it's not the whole group. Complication!)
