How far? How fast? How lONG?

The last time we saw Megan
She was headed for the trees
Hopeful of the things that she might see

She said she did not know where yet
And that she'd find out with time
We bid farewell not knowing
That might be our last goodbye

Megan was a quester
She liked to walk with Cue
She took all the maps
Not one or two

Where Time was a question
She only knew one sONG
She's singing, "how far, how fast, how lONG?"

Megan is a bright spark
In a world of black and white
She lights it like the slowly rising sun

Yeah, she's a question asker
She's a stand up kind of girl
She's out find the answers
In a quickly flooding world

Megan was a quester
She liked to walk with Cue
She took all the maps
Not one or two

Where Time was a question
She only knew one sONG
She's singing, "how far, how fast, how lONG?"

The OTC stops moving
And I stop to think it through
And watch the frames of Time
From start to end

My thoughts return to Megan
And the people that she saved
She came when we were lonely
And left us feeling brave

Megan was a quester

As already said in the wiki discussion, transcribing only the top layer (so what she's coming up with in the end) was a deliberate decision so we would have readable sentences. At the same time a lot of effort went into providing cleaned up graphic versions, where you have the garbled mess in its full glory, but much easier to decipher than in the OTC...

The 5 places I had in mind were:

USA, west coast (San Francisco?)
USA, east coast (NYC?)
Europe (Marseille. Of course)
South America (?)
australia (?)
Spoiler:
Of course the exact locations/cities might be adjusted depending on proximity / level of interest, and maybe we could add one or two more.

For the date, I suggest the anniversary of The End (July 26th 2014) with something like this timing to avoid the 4am curse.

I'm suggesting the end rather than the beginning because July tends to be more a time of year for traveling and such anyway.

Let me know what y'all think. If there isn't too much objection, I will start setting something up more official. The earlier it's planned the better the chance of people showing up IMO

Is there anyone besides me in the middle of the U.S.? I'm roughly midway between SF and NYC; as the chirpy flies I'm actually closer to Winnipeg or Mexico City. Would anyone want to come to a meetup in New Orleans or Austin (or maybe Minneapolis, since we're talking July)?

I would come to one in Austin - presuming you're talking about Austin, Texas, and not Austin, Minnesota. :-)

Rest with me here - now we're after The End
The newpix have stopped so it's Time to inhale
Breathe the sweet air that blows over new lands
Sing me a song of a wowterful tree
A new-finished tale

What we have left we'll scrape into a pile
Laughs we have shared and laughs still left to spend
Some things will stay here and others will sail
Open your heart and let them go free
We had them a while
And they are what made us an us, we a we

I have duller matters that I must attend
The Outside rebukes us with test and with trial
For this one moment take hold of these strands
See how they blend
Pulled by a needle and spinning a trail

Dance through the thread and remember you me
Ghosting through pastposts that I once had penned
Lord Randall is resting and so is the Sea
But echoes of greatness will always transcend

Remember the sweetness, remember the style
Remember with color and voices and bands
Breathe deep of the wind of this uncharted isle
And build me a castle of marvelous sands

End of Days: Prologue

Postby AluisioASG » Thu Aug 01, 2013 5:59 am UTC

Professor, one of our scouts has found the unaccounted tribe. They are currently at a safe area south from here.

Farrah slowly raised her head from the huge book she was reading. She looked very tired, the preparations for the oncoming flood having burned her out. Her voice was faint, almost inaudible.

Farrah wrote:Thank you, Amtoo. That's good news.

Amtoo could have turned back and gone to his own matters, but he could see something else was concerning Farrah. And she knew he could see it.

Spoiler:
Farrah wrote:Do you know why our parents singled us out?

She motioned for him to come closer and turned the book she was reading.
Farrah wrote:They knew their civilization was about to end. They knew what was going to happen. The blinding lights, the cataclysms, the closure of the passage. And they chose us to preserve their knowledge and make better use of it than them. They wanted us to use that knowledge to help our equals, to protect them from the effects of…

Amtoo wrote:And isn't that what we have been doing all this time?

His voice was beautifully calm, as if trying to comfort Farrah.
Amtoo wrote:What those who came before us were doing? And those who came before them? We may have failed to contain the river, but nevertheless we found a way to save all those people…

Farrah wrote:And we almost failed at it too!

The tone of her voice, containing a mixture of sadness, anger and fear, frightened Amtoo. He had never seen her like that before.
Farrah wrote:This was supposed to be the first big achievement of our generation, and we… we…

Amtoo wrote:We succeed.

His voice contained the confidence Farrah was struggling to find. Her right hand was now between his.

After thinking for a few seconds, Farrah realized Amtoo was right. As always. And their faces were now disturbingly close to each other.

The room's climate had suddenly become more intimate. But before anything else could happen, a bald, pale guy carrying a suitcase entered the room.

That meant bad news. It always meant.

* * *

Deep into Farrah's mind, all that conversation sparked a lost memory. A memory a normal human wouldn't be capable of possessing, but which their parents deemed to be of utmost importance. A memory transferred from parent to child for generations.

A memory of how all that had begun…

I think I may have figured out what was on the map the Beanies showed Cuegan on their way to the castle (Frame 2803: http://geekwagon.net/projects/xkcd1190/?frame=2803). If someone has already figured this out, I apologize in advance, but I haven't seen it in the time I've been active here.

I tried matching up the Beanie map with the area around the Strait of Gibraltar, but couldn't find a good enough match. It came close, but too many things were off. I also tried matching it with the Mediterranean coast from Marseille to Spain, but that didn't work either. Then I noticed that one point that four straight lines led to and had a brainstorm: What if that point is the castle? I put that point on Chateau d'If and rotated and resized the map many times, and then, voilà!

Image

It seems to match up pretty well. I'm thinking all the points are observation towers and/or outposts.

Any thoughts?
C'mon, let's see what's through here!

I think the consensus was that they were observation posts, but nothing was decided beyond "it's a surveying map". It does fit pretty well - especially the way it follows that ridge. I'd say this is a plausible connection - good work!

Ooh, End of Days has an awefulsome start! That Amtoo is quite the ladies' man, eh?
And the map-matching is quite impressive, neopifex. Where is Cuegan's start point in relation to this new overlay? I'm not very good with maps.

Thanks! I shall have to take another look at it, perhaps standardize the format to make it more convenient for others to add as well. I like the tables for that. Also, how does one move then entire section to the Art section, instead of the Forums Quotes section? This, I could not figure out, but I feel it would be more appropraite. I would also like to change some of the page headings. I do not think your designs are at all impractical. Perhaps they would be expensive to make, but not impractical, per say :) Perhaps breaking it up into sections such as "Original OTC Designs", "OTTification Designs", and "Original OTT Designs" might make more sense?

I'll move the section and take a look at the subheadings. :)

Hmm, we certainly got movement of the Sea, but I don't think we ever got evidence of tidal movement in the OTC. And we never saw the Moon, either... :(

For that matter, we don't even have significant tides in the Mediterranean as it is in its outside-current state. If anything, I would find it worrisome if we had seen gravitational tides in the OTC.

I like that idea. But why stop at ottifications? There are OTC-related poems, fake ONGs, photo manips and other creative works which also seem equally notable. In fact, you could even throw in a link to the OTT page that was current when the newpix was posted.

Kieryn wrote:Okay, I'm thinking about an idea for a meetup... We're across the world, so I was thinking maybe a 5 city meet, with Skype used to unite the cities.

The 5 places I had in mind were:

USA, west coast (San Francisco?)
USA, east coast (NYC?)
Europe (Marseille. Of course)
South America (?)
australia (?)

Australia is a tricky one. Roughly the same landmass as the US, but a tiny fraction of the people, all spread out around the coast. By road, travel to the nearest capital city can be measured in days. (I think it's only one day to Melbourne, maybe, but it's several to the second closest capital city.)

You may think it's a long way to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to Australia.

That said, if it goes down anywhere near Adelaide, I'm in. I could probably swing some plane tickets and a cheap room$, given a year to accumulate funds. But I'd still prefer close to home, I'm wary about travelling alone.

$Any offers of free accommodation would be appreciated but politely declined, sorry. It's nothing personal, I'm just a bit self-conscious as to my qualities as a house guest.
Wait for it.

Indeed. I would imagine, that if there were sufficient interest for an Australian one, it would probably be in Sydney or Melbourne. The lower number of Australian posters compared to those from the US, for example, would also make it more difficult. I'm not really a big enough part of the OTT to really be part of such things, I feel, but if it were in Sydney I'd consider it.

Hmm, an NS High Speed ticket rotterdam-marseille takes only 7 or 8 hours and costs EUR172.80 to EUR208 (retour). Not overly expensive. If I were to include that into a holiday or maybe a city trip with some outside friends. They'd be weirded out that I propose a city trip though, because I never go on city trips.

Any thoughts?

It's basic triangulation surveying. Each of those points is where they set up a theodolite to make some measurements.

I'm going to be going to bed soon so will need others to help continue ONG. So I will leave you with some prickly ONG posting secrets. On the hour a new file shows up in the folder and you just take the previous number add one to it and post the following code:

Code: Select all

Ooh - is that him halfway up the trunk? I hope that tree knows where it's going!

BTW, did we decide what the significance was of Megan hearing chirps from the night sky and seeing "a few stars flicker"?

I haven't seem anything explaining what that was for. My only guess is that the birds know somethings going on and are leaving. But It's hard to know.

To all y'all interested in decoding Beanish:

I have left a longish comment on the mysterious Beanish-blog. It is waiting for moderation. Does anyone know who that guy is? (S)He must be a professional in the field of linguistics or one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable amateurs I have ever seen. A seaish amount of analysis has been done over there!

Oh, and thanks for the positive reactions on my first OTTification! The bar has been set incredibly high by all the creative OTTers here, but I hoped it would be interesting to see something in a foreign language and perhaps listen to some previously unknown music.

Molpy up!

Edit: Too much all!
