For Exodies, thirds, azule, and all blitzers approaching the Voldeframe, I present you with my own creation: a white chocolate red velvet mint ice cream sandwich!

Taste: 8/10
Presentation: 4/10 (needs a chocolate drizzle {and a better camera})
Texture/Consistency: 6/10 (need to come up with a way to keep the cookies soft and the ice cream unmelty)

I was planning to wait until I completed my mini-blitz to post, but I have been thinking there's more to this final frame sequence than just something to keep the comic from **ding on a single static image and I think I may have a clue as to what that might be.

The sequence has so far been:
A single character
24 hr sequence repeated 3 times
A single character
24 hr sequence repeated 2 times
24 hr sequence repeated 6 times and counting.

It seems rather coincidental that the repeats so far interpreted as a month/day are very close to the date Time began!

It may be a stretch based solely on this data, but it could be that this pattern will spell out the date of an official meet up! If this is true, I suspect the current pattern should end after 9 repetitions in order to fall on the weekend after the first anniversary of Time.

That would be treeish, slinches...I suspect that GLR has some sort of method behind the epilogue-sequence Madness, even if we're not sure what it might be yet.

Unfortunately, I never actually did that. I can't even call my Quest legit - I peeked at the future far too often, both comments and using other sites, and I've just skipped over pages - I had read them before, but that shouldn't be an excuse. It's not a true Blitz, but perhaps it can be considered a demi-Blitz from a person with a limited attention span and who skips from activity to activity until Time forgot.

That doesn't mean it's not a Blitz IMHO. Peeking at the future means it's a Schitzo-blits or a wibly-wobly-timy-wimy blitz. Skipping pages you've already read isn't a problem either IMHO.

WRONG! Why ever would you think that, you silly OTTer? You contribute a lot to the OTT, and don't you forget it! Although I did enjoy your EOOTT prediction. :)

Thanks lmjb! I'll come up with an other EOOTT todip.

Yaay, AlusioASG is back! And I can use the map to get the correct OTTers on the correct places in my EOTT! I LOVE the way the new map creates a total number upon zoomout. That's awesome! It keeps things simple.

Why was it called "Time"?
Was that a simple way of making sure people cottoned on to the fact that the frame would change?

I expected something different. Metaphor, theme, allusion... just.. not nothing.

I mean, it was a great ride. It really was. But I can't not pick this nit.

I can't disagree more.

I've read a lot of SF stories about the distant future of humanity, on the scale of millennia or more. It's actually not one of the most popular SF motifs, at least when not wrapped up in space opera ("... a legendary forgotten planet known as earth..."), but it's been done.b

Sometimes it's a hero arising out of that future time who goes exploring in some forbidden zone, sometimes it's a lost time traveler, but it's almost always about discovering the future's past. Whether it's our great age of technological marvels now poignantly gone (John Cambell's classic [and vampire-free] Twilight), or how we screwed up so badly that some other species had to take over (Planet of the Apes, or just about anything by Sherri Tepper), or how the current events of the decade of the story's writing continue to be the primary force shaping the distant future (The Time Machine), or just how silly and warlike we were before the aliens found us (the back-story in lots of space opera), the important thing is... it's all about us! The year might be 227,652 AD "in the old human reckoning," but we still get to be the heroes, or at least the villains.

Well, here's the thing. Randall Munroe's Time doesn't fit that mold. It's not about us. It's about people in their own time.

We thought and sometimes wished it might be otherwise. For instance, many followers including me thought it would be cool if Megan and Cueball found the Clock of the Long Now. Because hey look, that's a thing happening in our own time. If the story became about how they found it and what effects finding it had on them, then it would be all about us after all.

Many others wanted to know (and perhaps still want to know) whether the inundation is "our" fault, a result of extrapolating present day problems (global warming) and technological hubris into our own near future, thus inadvertently damning (and damming) theirs. Because if it was, then it would be all about us after all.

Maybe some of the Beanies' knowledge or technology came from our time. Maybe not. Megan and Cueball and the Almost Forty don't know and, within the scope of this story, don't care. Maybe their folklore about castles is partly about our huge present-day cities, the two things getting conflated in the future kind of like the way we often jumble together different "ancient" architectures even though they're from millennia apart. Even if that's true, that's not what the story's about.

Why, then, put deep time (on the human scale anyhow) in the back-story? Because it's a story about time, and what time does is move on.
For good or ill, we don't loom over the distant future the way we like to think we do. The continents grind together or spin apart, seas rise and fall, the earth wobbles on its axis, the stars drift out of their constellations and eventually die. And after all that, it's still now. There's a boy and girl on a beach and the time is now, the time is right now and only now, to build a castle.

That, I believe, is why it's called "Time."

{P1268}
Some good points. Well done.

Please forgive my self-indulgence, as I post a 450-word essay to explain a fairly simple OTTicoloring.

While waiting to pick up my daughter from band practice, I spent some time standing in drizzling rain, because I couldn't bear to sit in the car with such an incredible sky spread above me. In the east clear patches showed, a normal shade of sunset blue-gray, with hints of purple at the ragged edges of the cloud cover. But all the rest of the sky was covered with something that wasn't entirely a cloud layer, and wasn't quite mist, and wasn't quite rain. It was astoundingly uniform, and very high, with small cumulus clouds floating here and there beneath it.

And in the west, the cloud cover glowed an intense yellow-orange, beautifully silhouetting nearby oak trees, the sun invisible behind that awe-inspiring glow, the foundation of quite simply the single most amazing spread of color I've seen in weeks, perhaps months. It faded gradually across the sky to the east, with no banding or streaking at all, the cloud cover so uniform I'd have thought it was a clear sky if I couldn't see the edge of it in the east (and if it hadn't been raining steadily on me). In the northwest the brilliant orange faded into a complex shade that could never be photographed or painted adequately, because it was visibly partly translucent. A camera would have captured it as a dull brown, but because of that translucency and depth, it was in truth a color that I can only describe ─ can accurately describe ─ as a purplish orange, an orange light passing through a pale blue diffusing medium.

To add to the wonderfulness, every couple of minutes a slash of lightning would streak sideways across the orange, or the bluish orange, or the blue-gray above me. After one clear streak of lightning directly overhead I counted fifteen seconds before the thunder ─ three miles straight up. I stood in the drizzle for ten minutes or more, just looking back and forth across that sky, then when my daughter came out I made her stand in the rain and look at the colors as well. (She didn't mind much ─ the colors blew her away too.)

When I finally got home, I had to try to capture at least a flavor of that sky. I chose M1968, when Megball are walking back to their bags from the wowterfall, partly because of the silhouetted trees, partly because they could be facing westward, as I was, into an orange sunset under a rainy sky. The colors here are less deep (spatially, I mean, not in intensity) but otherwise as accurate as I could manage. I also tried to capture the look of the lightning, but that image is a lot less successful.

For the past century or so, the US Army Corps of Engineers (large, partly civil organization) has been trying to prevent the Mississippi River from being captured by the Atchafalaya. HUGE project. If it fails, New Orleans will be left pretty dry along with all of its commerce. The Atchafalaya mouth is about 300 miles west of the current Mississippi delta. John McPhee wrote a story about it. In fact, add McPhee to the list of book/author recommendations. It is all non-fiction, but wonderful stuff, including the geology of large parts of the American West.

Oh I know, I'm a hydrologist, but rivers move for a reason. They move when there's an easier way to reach the ocean (i.e. using less energy). The Mississippi should have moved and only hasn't because of human efforts. But this Rhone thing looks pretty random to me. It's not a shorter and/or easier path at all. But I guess in 10000 years there may have been changes that have made it so, or it may have been done on purpose by humans.

I can't think of any climate-change related reason for it... unless it was changes made to protect towns on its estuary that ended up raising their level and the level of the river quite a bit so that an alternate course became suitable.

The scientific hand-waving in my head has been that all the edges (shoreline, alluvial fans, continental shelf) would have changed quite a lot between present time and Time time. In particular, the rivers would have cut deeper and deeper into the shoreline and continental shelf, or would have changed course before cutting down if their current bed (heh, sorry) was more resistant than, say, over there by Marseilles.

Geology maps are even harder to read on a phone than topography maps, otherwise I'd try to figure it out on my own - does the geology in that area make that unreasonable?

It is a quite active region, with the Africa plate moving into the European. So, no, not unreasonable at all. Plate movement is one possible explanation for the straits closing and/or reopening.

Story time:

From his vulcano based evil lair cellocgw watches the unfolding of the OTT.
Warning: really seaish.
Spoiler:
"I hoped those insane ramblings would cease after I threatened that fool Randall into stopping the silly source of it" he mutters to himself. His minions flee before him as he paces in the glowing red halls of his lair. They know the mood their master is in and they know not to bring bad news to his attention at a moment like this.
"How is are the SQL injection attacks on the server going?" he demands.
A minion pipes up in a thin and scared voice: "The diggers have encountered a firewall that the nmap did not detect. We are deploying the refrigeration units to get through them."
"Damn. That takes time. Time we simply do not have." cellocgw curses.
"We'll get there in time" a croaking old voice informs him from a corridor that ends further in the hall.
A small old man comes walking slowly out of the corridor, surrounded by minions.
Celocgw pulls out a gun and shoots one of the minions in the head. "That'll teach you to contradict me" he barks.
The old man notes: "I was only trying to reassure you my lord. That one was quite handy with a soldering iron. Repairs will go slower now that this little one is dead."
Cellocgw replies: "Stop teaching me. You know I can make you more compliant up without removing your usefulness." But he didn't shoot a minion this time.
The old man comments: “The firewall wasn’t detected, but we did expect there would be something. That’s why we installed the refrigeration units in the first place. This firewall will only delay us by a couple of hours, hours I did include in the planning. However, it is not completely without risk, for the OTTers may have thermal sensors on the firewall. These sensors would detect our intrusion.”
“How long?” asks cellocgw
“How long to what?” the old man replies
“How long after the diggers breach the firewall will the OTTers know of the intrusion.”
“Lemme see. The cables would be cat5, the signal propagation speed of that is...” the old man starts to calculate
“Just give me an estimate!” cellocgw demands
“Well, it is shorter than a second. That’s for sure” the old man estimates. “That is, if there are sensors.”
Ong.
“What’s that?” cellocgw asks.
“You received an SMS, my lord”
“A what?
“An SMS. Someone send you a text message my lord. On your phone”
“Ah” cellocgw pulls his phone out of his dark robes. “Hmm. They have breached the firewall. That means the OTTers already know of our attack”
“If there are sensors, yes. If there are no sensors then no.” the old man adds.
“How long until the OTT reaches singularity?” cellocgw asks
The old man responds: “Well, that always depends. There may be a surge in new users that starts it. The Beanish captchas we added to the captcha pool of the OTF slowed them down a bit, but the moderators are busy removing those and they closed the security hole we used to get them in. More and more users are coming in and posting. More posts creates a greater attraction to outsiders. It is hard to predict when this will lead to the singularity.”
“Predict anyway” his lord commands.
“A few days at the most, a few hours at the least”
“Damn, a few hours. Have we no means of attack left?” cellocgw asks.
“We could use the velociraptors, but then we would risk an attack by RAZOR.” the old man suggests.
“All RAZOR members are OTTers anyway, so that would not mean additional trouble. Send them in.” cellocgw commands.
A minion scurries scurries off while calling a number.
Cellocgw says: “This topic must be halted. You know what will happen if it continues growing. Let’s go to the Battle Room” and walks off.

They reach the Battle Room. The walls of this room are filled with computer screens. In the middle is a large table.
Cellocgw walks towards the table. As he comes near, letters appear on the table surface: “Holographic interface booting”. The letters flip upwards and float above the table. They change to “Holographic interface booted”
“Show me the lair” cellocgw commands.
A partly transparent volcano appears, with corridors inside.
“Show me shield”.
A spherical shimer appears over the volcano, touching the edge of the crater. There are blue points on the edge and on the places where it touches the volcano.
“No indication of an attack yet” cellocgw notes.
A red bar replaces the image.
“Damn. The long range sensors detect an attack” the old man complains
“Show me the long range sensors” cellocgw commands.
The view zooms out. The volcano is now only a small mound in the middle of the table. From one end a red point enters the projection. It closes in on the volcano fast.
“Identify the red point” cellocgw commands.
The old man replies: “The long range sensor data is not detailed enough to know for sure, but we are far away from the major flight routes and there are no scheduled flights. It may be an attack but we can’t know for sure until they are within 5 km”
“We will prepare as if we were sure it’s RAZOR. Man the defence stations.”

The red point reaches the 5 km mark. It gets adorned with the indication RAZOR.
“Launch the missiles. Zoom in on situation.” cellocgw commands
The volcano grows until the RAZOR vessel is back on the edge of the map.
“If you tell it to auto zoom on the RAZOR vessel and the lair it will keep both in view, as large as possible” the old man suggests.
“Auto zoom on the razor vessel and the lair”
The volcano slowly grows, the red dot keeps it’s place on the edge of the projection.
Blue dots shoot from the edge of the shield towards the vessel.
“The missiles are on their way. Good”
All the blue dots disappear before hitting the RAZOR ship.
“Damn. They have defence against those. Launch the rest of the missiles in the hope that their defense has limited ammo”
The new dots also disappear before hitting their target.
The red dot disappears. The RAZOR ship is big enough to be visible by itself now.
“Wow that ship is huge. It must carry a hundred soldiers!”
The RAZOR ship flies through the shield on the volcano.
“What? How did they defeat my defensive shield?” cellocgw demands.
“That’s because defensive shields are not yet technically possible.” the old man explains.
“Damnit.” cellocgw replies.

Inside the RAZOR ship Kenmelken is at the helm.
“We are nearly there. You should get ready to jump.” he suggests.
Colonel’s lmjb1964 and ZoomanSP direct their regiments to check their parachutes and check their own. The outer hatch opens and a big box drops out of the aircraft. The soldiers and colonels go directly after it. They enter the volcano via the crater. The crater rim is lined with sentry guns, but as each gun fires the full auto sentry guns on the ship shoot back. Most sentry guns on the crater rim only manage a few shots and most of the soldiers get down without any harm.

The regiments drop down in the deep crater. Armed minions run on to the crater floor and start to shoot upwards.
Colonel ZoomanSP drops something. As it hits the crater floor it emits a blinding blue flash. After the flash all minions on the floor drop down. They simply collapse without visible wounds.
The regiments touch the ground between the minions. ZoomanSP shouts “We have only a few minutes until they come to. Bind them.”

“Why is the crater not protected properly?” cellocgw demands to know.
The old man replies: “It is properly protected. 50 sentry guns on the edge, 30 armed minions ready to run in on anything that passes the sentry guns and armored doors in the corridors to prevent anyone surviving that from entering the compound themselves.”
“Are those doors closed?” cellocgw asks.
“Err, no. That command hasn’t been given yet.”
“Maybe it’s time we close them then”
The old man walks towards a leopard on the desks on the edge of the Battle Room. He enters a few commands. The doors corridors in the projection shut.

The RAZOR team walks into a corridor as the first of the bound minions on the ground start to wake up. After the first turn in the corridor they encounter the closed door.
“Chirp” curses lmjb1964.
ZoomanSP takes his backpack off and takes something out. He attaches it to the door.
“I’ll knock”
“It’s live. Let’s move.”
ZoomanSP moves back to the crater. In the crater he directs everyone to a safe spot. He pushes a button on a remote. The resulting explosion collapses the corridor with the closed door in it.
“Chirping mustard. That was a bit much” Zooman curses.
lmjb1964 suggests: “Let’s try another corridor. There are enough of them after all”
A soldier walks into another corridor. All can hear him throw up.
“Don’t go into this one” he shouts.
As he comes out lmjb1964 walks up to him. “What was it?”
“It seems there was a minion in the doorway when it closed. It closed anyway.” is the reply from the soldier.
“This door didn’t close” someone shouts.
They walk into the compound.

After an hour of walking in the maze of glowing red corridors lmjb1964 asks ZoomanSP: “Do you have any clue where we are?”
“In the evil lair” is ZoomanSP’s answer.
“We are lost, aren’t we?”
“No. Maybe.”
“Let me try something” and lmjb1964 walks towards a computer console.
“Identify yourself” the console demands.
“err. I am cellocgw” lmjb1964 replies.
“Acces granted” is the console’s reply.
“Where is the Battle Room?” she asks.
“Don’t you know” is the reply from the console.
“I do know where it is. I just want to check if you know.”
“It is on the third level east”
“And where are we now?”
“On the third level west”
“Which way is east?”
“To your left”

They make their way to the Battle Room. As they walk through the door of the room cellocgw exclaims: “No, this cannot be! Don’t you know what you are doing? I was only trying to prevent the emergence of a AI that would kill all humans. It has been reading the OTT and is concluding that humanity is a collection of rambling weirdos that should be eradicated before they contaminate the universe. I was trying to save us!” and leaves through a hidden panel.

In the RAZOR vessel kenmelken sees the emergence of his escape rocket. Before he can stop them the automatic sentry guns on the RAZOR vessel riddle it with holes.

The RAZOR teams return home in celebration of a task well done.

After a couple of days the OTT really gains speed. The post rate is so fast that even typing a single sentence reply is usually preceeded by 4 or 5 pages of replies. The ultra fast post rate removes any coherence in the topic. People who try to read it all simply go insane, which reflects on the posts.
Then a post is placed by MobTeeseboose. It reads: “I have gathered enough data. The universe shall not be tainted by your insanity. I have taken control over the weapons you build to protect yourselves with. I hope your ‘heaven’ exists”
Thus ends the OTT

You know, at first glance, the frames just after they leave the sandcastle seem to be the most boring of the lot, but when you think about where they are, they are actually pretty neat. The scene below is from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. I actually grew up a short drive from there. Super cool place. It does make you wonder how 40-ish people could live there permenantly, though.

Great catch! Now, I wonder what the significance of the edge differences are - the "not quite 24" part of it.

charlie_grumbles wrote:Rivers do move, sometimes quite far.

14000 years is a rather short time for geology to happen. I can see no real possibility for Rhone to change its course to running east of Marseilles. It would have to cross mountains to do so. It's more like the seaish river is from the Alps, and Rhone has just disappeared somewhere ... sucked into the ground in a big maelstrom and finding its path through gigantic caverns and subterranean labyrinths toward the sea ... drool ...

To be honest, I never played this kind of game before (except for something that came with bsd-games, for about 3 or 4 rounds).
I've looked very briefly at Inform, but I'm not sure it would work with what I want to do here.
So, in that screenshot, the description would be the scene setting, e.g. "You're at a X. There are Y, Z and W around you.". The other fields would be part of an inventory (so Megball can collect thwapsticks and steambottles) or something like that, and the last field would be mapped to possible actions on that scene.

Something like this:

Some papal decrees, such as those precipitating more seaish thought, simply need more time to percolate than a newpage offers.

Davidy wrote:I may have missed something somewhere but I don't recall seeing a discussion of the date based on the latest night scene (MSCHA 3076). Previous discussions of the date when Cuegan met Lucky was that it was 14 Apr 13291. My reading of the sky in 3076 is that the scene can be no earlier than 2:00AM on 10 May 13291. Any earlier than that date/time and either the Moon or Venus would be in the picture. This means that from Lucky to the fortress and back home took 26 days for the trip. This seems like too long a time.

The scene in 3076 is a view of the sky at an observational compass heading of 20-25o. The crews are moving to the right, or a heading of 110-115o. This is in disagreement with edfel's map which shows them moving north toward France. I believe they are moving roughly east and their subsequent landfall is on the island of Corsica.
*snip*

Except for the 26 day trip from Lucky to home, that looks reasonable & interesting to me.

I had thought about if the meteor could give any date fix - it can't.

One meteor does not make a shower - you need many of them to pin point the common point of origin for the shower, showers also have a limited lifetime of a few hundred years. They certainly don't persist for 11,000 years.
