Blindposting from page 700.

I was exactly halfway through the OTT before the weekend... but it grows yet. However, I'm still advancing faster than the OTT, and so I feel the end is still in sight.

Nothing revolutionary to report, although I did see the very first accurate guess of the true nature of the Sea and its rising by mathrec on page 655. A very exciting time!

I just want to say I love you all!

At some point in 3+1 dimensional spacetime, the amorphous collection of molecules which represents an OTTer can "eternally" (well, I've already contextualized time to be part of the coordinate system) be found at the spacetime coordinates representing access to this thread. As beings of limited +1-dimensional maneuverability, you can never retroactively rearrange spacetime such that you are not intersecting the spacetime coordinates of this thread.

continuing this discussion about Julian Jaynes' Bicameral Mind book, Exodies wrote:{P1384}
You are right, he didn't define consciousness (in that book), but I thought of it as a convenient word for the system (thing, process, hm) which changed in people producing the differences he points out between early and late stories. These things need an explanation. For some reason there is widespread resistance to the idea that self awareness (they are your thoughts, not gods talking to you) is so new (3000 years). It's this resistance which intrigues me and I bring Julian into every group I barnacle on hoping to find someone who understands why they reject it so instantly and strongly. Oh yes, and his analysis was all about language, so nothing at all to do with dogs or any other critter (molpyish or not).
In my case, it's about bad reasoning. I also resist bad reasonsing that leads to conclusions with which I happen to agree.

The word "consciousness" already has meaning; if he is using the word to mean something else (that he hasn't defined), he's being intellectually disingenuous. There's no excuse for that in a book that is intended to be taken seriously at face value. What he is talking about may better be described as "culture", not "consciousness". Had he used that word, (and thus invoked that concept instead of the other), I would much more readily go along. But also, in that case, he's pretty much stating the obvious. "Culture" is not a mystery. "Consciousness" is, and it is not one he has addressed, despite his use of the word. So, his book (and ideas) are dressed in the garb of significance, while being, in fact, trivial and dishonest.

As for resistance to the idea that consciousness (the way I understand it) arose in the last three thousand years, I resist it because there is a lot of reason (evidence) to suppose that it fundamentally based on the organic workings of the brain, and little reason to suppose that a change has occurred in the last three thousand years that makes our brains more different from earlier brains than they are from each other. What he proffers up does not relate to the biology and neurology of brains at all.

So, he is making an extraordinary claim with no backing, and writing about it in such a way as to obfuscate what amounts to grandiloquent sesquipedalian handwaving.

I can't. (Hope that helps)

The connection is Kevin Bacon

Thanks for the responses. It turned out I had another grouping wrong. I should have updated the question. The "One Word Movie Titles That Begin With C" category was really the "Oscar Wining Movies" category, moving "The Godfather" out of this group and replacing it with "Clueless", which was not even nominated.

That means the new group is "Risky", "Pit Bulls", and "Clueless". A little easier.

Of course Kevin Bacon is a correct answer, but that's the trivial one. The puzzlemakers had another in mind. Can you get that one?

It could be useful for comparison with the real sky, but mostly just for show, as one of the artifacts of the OTT, like the animations and the panoramas and such.

Now, after seeing this post I couldn't resist, so ... here you have a little (actually 1) Past Present from me - a panorama of the whole sky from the OTC:

Well, it seems I have been actually future-past-ninja'd by NoMouse with the sky panorama  But I'm still new with the constellations added (at least up to NP 966 so far... :D).

It may have been done, but that doesn't mean it can't be done again. (though I should probably go back and update my post to indicate that my request has already been serviced)

The sandcastle stood on a slight rise just on the edge of the beach. It stood on its own and looked out over a broad spread of the Mediterranean Sea. It was a remarkable sandcastle by every means - it was almost 5q high with many towers, made of semencoffeecancerbabies, and had a great scaffold on which the topmost towers were built, of a size and proportion which wowterfully pleased the eye.
However the only people for whom the castle was in any way special were Megan and Cueball, and that was only because they happened to be the ones who built it. They had worked on it for many days, as living in such a closely-knit tribe sometimes made them nervous and irritable. Cueball was tall, bald and never quite at ease with himself. The thing that used to worry him most was the fact that people always used to ask him what he was looking so worried about. Megan worked scavenging things that float down the river from people in the hills, which she always used to tell her friends was a lot more interesting than they probably thought. It was, too - most of her friends worked in molpy hunting.
On Wednesday night it had rained very heavily, the beach was wet and muddy, but the Thursday morning sun was bright and clear as it shone on Megan and Cueball's sandcastle for what was to be the last time.
It hadn't properly registered yet with Megan and Cueball that the sea was rising and would knock it down and flood the whole area.

How could I not recognise my favourite trilogy of four in five parts plus another

Random QuOTTe:
Spoiler:
The One True Comic derives its picture of the whole Universe on the principle of extrapolated temporal analyses.
To explain — since every piece of semencoffeecancerbabies in the Universe is in some way affected by every other piece of semencoffeecancerbabies in the Universe, it is in theory possible to extrapolate the whole of Time — every molpy, every wowtree, their outlines, their pixels and their economic and social history from, say, one small piece of cupcake.
The man who invented the One True Comic did so basically in order to annoy his devoted followers.
Randall Munroe — for that was his name — was a man of romance, sarcasm, math and language or, as his wife would have it, a nerd.
And she would nag him incessantly about the utterly inordinate amount of time he spent staring out into space, or mulling over the mechanics of raptor attacks, or doing spectrographic analyses of movie timelines.
"Have some sense of time!" she would say, sometimes as often as thirty-eight times in a single day.
And so he built the One True Comic — just to show her.
And into one end he plugged the whole of Time as extrapolated from a piece of cupcake, and into the other end he plugged his followers: so that when he turned it on they saw in one instant a single frame and the instruction to wait for it.
To Randall Munroe's horror, the shock completely annihilated their brains; but to his satisfaction he realized that he had proved conclusively that if life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then the one thing it cannot afford to have is a sense of Time.

The computer responded, 'I can't do that' or something similar, which was different from its usual response to a command that it didn't understand or an object that it didn't recognise, so I can only assume the computer had actually been programmed to attempt to remove its neck, and fail, a broken-heart-shaped box of inadequacy and wire. Ever since that day, I have taken care to only draw stick figures with clear, easy-to-cut necks, so that they may not suffer this same failure, you insensitive clod!

Image Actually, GLR's stick-figuring is surprisingly difficult to mimic, as I learned while making the Boom de Yadas. After all, he has had hundreds and hundreds of Othercomics to perfect it, not to mention the thousands of newpix of Time!

Utterly wowsome.

Randammit, if only 42 guests was here, we could have had a username sandwich at the bottom of the thread!

My apologies, I will try to log in whenever there are 43 guests on the OTT. ;)

Has there been any consensus on what a the OTC is? Or at least what a 1-frame per hour animation is called. I'm attempting to set up my own, but what is it? A "Timed movie", an "Unimation"? Suggestions very welcome.

Agreed.

Well, if a tree is wowterful, and knows what it's doing, then its roots are responsible for keeping it there. So something which is treerootish is bound to stay wowterful and awesomeful until further notice, perhaps?

I hope I'm not overstepping here, but I felt that the other haberdasherers of the OTT deserved some recognition. So, on the wiki page for Hats (no longer simply Hats by buffygirl, but the old title should still redirect) I've added a category for Hats by Other Haberdasherers - mainly dominated by me, but that's because I had all my images on hand. If there are any others, please, add them! Also, if you see your hat has no "Before" image, that's because I didn't keep it around. I should be filling those in fairly quickly, however.

What a happy choice:

Perhaps both in one?

I admit, the dildos are a little hard to make out. I like the way the gold coin star came out better on Kieryn's card.
