I agree with Image: if Image is able to separate the oldpixbot posts by 20, that might be quite treeish. Image This influx of oldnewpix is wowterful for the Timeversary, but I think it might be a bit too seaish for the average OTT posting rate.

Continued commentary for np0014:
Cueball crouches over the semencoffeebacon apprehensively, as if knowing it will be the death of the unborn Sandcastle. Megan settles her head back down, as if knowing that all will turn out molpishly anyway.

Yes, we certainly don't want the bot trying to figure out which oldpix are "interesting"I. I propose the following solution:
  • A given OTT post shall be defined as "ninjaing oldpixbot" if it contains any frame of Time that was the newframe one yip ago, plus-or-minus 24 frames. (This allows OTTers to post an UNG a little ahead of or behind the exact one-yip anniversary for that frame).
  • Whenever the latest 19 posts are non-ninjaing and non-oldpixbot, oldpixbot may post the current UNG, with its normal 1/6-nopix delay.
  • In no event shall oldpixbot post a frame that is the same as, or earlier than, a ninja-ing frame.
OTTers may use my viewer to find out which is the current UNG frame, but the plus-or-minus 24 provision of the first rule allows for the inevitable human errorH and timezone differences that may result from OTTers reading old pages of the OTT and seeing the original ONGs there.
The first plus third rules combine to produce the effect that oldpixbot may have to wait up to an extra 24 UNGs (currently 12 hoursH, later 24 hoursH) after having been ninja'd, before it can post.

I think this will give us an incentive to UNG relevant and favorite frames, when we are so inclined, and if we don't oldpixbot will throw in a frame just to keep us in touch with when we are in the ecclesiastical calendar.

Thoughts?

IThe Interesting Newpix Paradox :
Stated superbly by @mscha, but my derivation (which I imagined the moment I saw him write how would oldpixbot decide which frames are interesting?, is slightly different:
Suppose we have made a list of all interesting newpix, a proper subset of all Frames of Time. Then there must be one frame that is not on this list, but is the most-often-mentioned in the OTT (or in the event of a tie, choose the earliest such frame). This frame is itself interesting because it is the earliest-most-discussed frame not on the list. So it should be on the list.
.'. All newpix are interesting. Q.E.M. (quod erat molpiandum)

Let's say oldpixbot posts every frame. Nowadips, we generate about two newpages a dip, so once we get to longpix, there would end up being 10 oldpix a newpage. That might seem like a lot, but maybe it would be a springboard for all sorts of treeish conversation - now that we know how it ends, and what GLR was working so hard to do, we might see some things differently. And maybe new peeps will hear about it and want to join in, getting to experience time sorta more in the present. Just a thought. And if we tried it and the deluge of oldnewpix is driving us to drink, we can always ask oldpixbot to cut it back (Long Night, I'm looking at you). Just my 2 cents.

We're on a mission from GLR.

Ooooh, I forgot to reply to this too.

It should be a 5×7 grid, with each tile taking up 79×79 pixels of space, making the grid precisely the size of a Time frame. (And also because a big grid means you could play for a long Time).

The tiles should be graphical, and combine in pairs the normal way as in 2048. Each has a picture of something. Possible tile choices:

The "2" would be Cueball,
The "4" would be Megan,
The "8" would be a bit of sandcastle, perhaps from frame M#38,
The "16" would be the trebuchet in action, e.g. frame M#224,
The "32" would be La Petite,
The "64" would be the Magic Kindom from e.g. frame M#795,
The "128" would be the neat tree,
and so on.

... and maybe the game should make you Wait a bit to encourage learning the patterns and strategy, and discourage addictiveness.

P.S. I'm pretty sure the fora are changing my avatar to a random Timeframe (if I am logged in). I got grapevine on the last refresh! SHould I save them in case we get a newpix? Might we recover the lost hash for frame #1 this way?
Edit: Nope, stopped now. The Madness is like the Universe, if ever we understand it, it is replaced with something more bizarrely inexplicable. (Quote from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
Edit2: My mistake, it was not even Madness! I was running the Cake Time Styler script, and forgot that I had modified it to change avatars of users with a post count of 27, 143, or 1011. Really had me going for a while. That's why I comment my own JavaScript profusely! :D

Either the Madnessen are doing this or the Cake Time Styler is.(What was the correct name?) If I remember correctly there was something about changing avatars to timeframes when the number of post is an interesting number. And after this post you no longer have 143 posts but 144. And on the Facebook low orbit of OTT, AluisioASG recently said something about fixing the Caketime.

Yes, that was exactly it! You win about 7 Internets.

Indeed it was Cake Time Styler, specifically my own version which alters the avatar when the user has 27, 143, or 1011 posts. So, I kinda forgot I did that

The oldpixbot posts don't really seem common to me at this point; definitely no more common than newpixbot posts used to be (at least a mip or two ago).

A look at mrob's OTT rate stats seems to say that the recent OTT speed was normally on the order of 2.5-3.5 posts/longpix; that meant about 10-14 posts/mysterypix, i.e. about a dozen posts between newpixbot updates (sometimes slightly less; there is at least one recorded case of two newpixbot posts in a row). I'd really prefer not setting a gap of less than 10, to coincide with that number (this would mean that, if we go into longpix and post frequency goes back down to Communitymip levels, the oldpixbot would, on average, post one frame in every 3-4, which IMHO is just about fine).
There are two films that I particularly like.
One of them is a science-fiction dramatic comedy involving a boy who accidentally travelled in time. Extremely popular when it originally came out in 1985, it retains a major cult following to this day.
The other one, of course, is Back to the Future.

I like this idea. Maybe an initial run for the week, then a shift to once or twice per NP thereafter. What's the calculation for the time this would take to show the rest before the next Timeversary?

mrob27 wrote:H Yes, I was a-coma at the Moment. It couldn't be helped...
Sorry. I, myself, was up (being a heretical 9pm for myself at the time) but couldn't post as my next frame was not ready. Hah, if I was a bot I'd have such a sad existence:
"I can't talk to people right now."
"Why not?"
"I have no ONG in which to give out. I'm not allowed to post save these times."
"That's sad, bluebot."
"They don't call me 'blue'bot for nothing. *sigh* :("

Simply factor the extra sleep into your adjustment schedule. Go slowly, do not attempt to correct your sleep schedule in less than a week.

Spoiler:
Being able to identify who quotes who would be useful. The name of the quoted person is not always given (like here). Sometimes the wrong name is given on purpose, and sometimes by accident (it's hard to keep track of the BBcode tags). Sometimes the quoted text is changed on purpose (like in a FTFY "fixed that for you").
On the surface, the problem seems to be about O(n log(n)) where n is the number of bytes in the input. It would take a lot of coding and a huge in-memory database to achieve that level of efficiency — perhaps easier if all formatting is stripped (?). Detecting "FTFY" and other edits would drive us up to O(n log2(n)) or maybe even O(n2 log(n)).
I don't know what that means. lol. But I get the point of stripping formatting, ignoring whose name is in the quote tag, etc. FTFY's...are essentially original works. OTTifications, if you will. I wouldn't exactly ignore them.

Maybe....maybe not. It depends on how you think of things that are sexual or violent. Saving someone's life can be violent, yet also sweet and touching. I mean, you're gonna love that person for the rest of your life, probably. I have more thoughts, but maybe another time I'll expound on the theme.

In my dialect of English, to "know" is not automatically reflexive. Nevertheless, I did not intend to say that he knows me. My signature only says that "he and I haven't communicated directly".
I suppose that he sort of "knows me" to whatever extent one can by looking at my website or by compiling and running my program RIES, and I similarly "know him" from reading the blag or watching videos of him giving a talk at some university or another.
That's the sense that I mean. Just as we could wonder, how does Randall handle all of us peeking into his life? Where the answer might be that he stopped coming to the forums (except that one time for us). I don't think he knows me nor you beyond that point of public information that is given out. *Stumbles to a halt*

So... uh... hi!

I guess this must be what the Present feels like! It's a bit different than it was the last time I posted from the Present, almost 1400NP ago. But defintiely molpish, probably even moreso than then.

Happy Timeversary to all! I am glad to have made it here by now, and apparently before the RECKONING. (Even though I did temporarily cheat by 358NP.) I'll pop back in later, after I've taken care of a couple heretical things that I've put off the last couple xips.

Anyways... a couple PastPost Ketchup responses from the last 10NP:
(It feels so weird to write "ketchup" instead of "PastPost", but I kind of like it)

And for that to happen, I'd need to write the future of (partially) real people. And I suppose some may oppose this.

I'd like to ask your permission to assume sometime in the future branch our timeline off into one we all banded together at Île d'If sometime in the future. Don't worry about money, I bought the island and even provided transportation for y'll and your families ― I hope you don't mind being escorted by three fighters and a flying missile platform.

I will also need to expose how I see some of you, character-wise. Why? Simple: our future Blitzars need regnal names, and most of them seek to follow of the spirit of the first OTTers. Fox example, Blitzar Grumbles the Second is a quite intelligent and serious guy, while Chronos the Fo(u)rth is quite interested in past OTTer history and has a theoretical degree in engineering (granted, all fifteen OTTers of her generation have theoretical degrees in engineering; as for “theoretical”, this is what I wrote to ucim: “apparently we forgot to gather all of humanity's knowledge and take it with us to Île d'If; being averse to Outsiders surely didn't help [in the long term]”).

If you don't want to be part of this, please speak, and I'll understand.
If you want to object in behalf of all OTTers, I'm all ears.
If you want to know more of what I'm planning, I'll be more than happy to discuss that.

If selected to be a part of your backstory in some way, I would be honored. This sounds like a seaish undertaking, and I look forward to reading it one xip!

mrob27 wrote:
The xkcd 1190 "Time" Replay Viewer

This is not a normal blitz report but an announcement:

In anticipation of the Tymiversary, I have created a "live replay" viewer for xkcd Time: mrob.com/time/replay

It replays the frames in real time, as if the date and time were during Time's first year. For example, if I set my date to April 20th, and leave the time alone (currently 07:57 UTC), it shows frame M748. Starting March 25th it will start replaying Time "live" as if it were the year 2013.

There is Javascript that checks every 10 seconds, so each new Timeframe should appear pretty soon after the ONG. It handles the meteor frames (I gave 2 minutes for each one), and it handles the Epilogue sequence, but ignores the transitional letter that sometimes comes at the beginning of a new 24-frame sequence.

There are also buttons to auto-play at 1 frame every 1.88 seconds (the Boom-de-Yada verse cadence) or you can manually step forwards and back. Leopard paws 'n' and 'p' work for Next and Previous.

To convert the frame number to the 64-character hash, I am using URLs at @mscha's site. I've tried to design it to be as friendly as possible: it only sends one new request each time a frame is needed, not every 10 seconds. I have sent a PM to mscha to ask if that is all right (if not, I'll have the Javascript load a file containing a list of all 3099 hashes).

I hope you like it, and use the chronotransponder if there are bugs or if you have any questions!

mrob27 Image

Edit: add GIF smiley I want to use elsewhere:
Spoiler:
typewriter.gif

This is very molpish! I think the one thing I'm most looking forward to is the meteor segment. I think 2 minutes may be a bit long, as I thought we determined that they were separated by about 10-15 seconds in real-Time, but other than that it is awesomeful!

macraw83 wrote:
On NP1383, BlitzGirl wrote:
HES wrote:uh-oh, Thirds seems to be having some Time trouble. Blitzgirl, whatever happened to that temporal whistle you snatched from the past future past cmyk?

I'm afraid it's caught in a loop...after I returned to the Present with the Whistle of Temporal Harmony, cmyk took it back and then gave it to his past self again. I'm not sure how to get it back now.

I may have been ninja'd (I've read the next couple NP, but a ketchupper could have answered), but you could change a couple pastposts to send it forward temporarily, from sometime during the OTT when it is in your possession. You could probably even hang onto it indefinitely, as long as you set the portal to return it to open up far in the future (with the other end positioned conveniently within the past).

But then cmyk (present OR past) would never get his whistle. And since he's basemented, I'd like him to have it at some point in his temporal existence; who knows if he will ever ott again

That's where I think you're wrong. At least, if I am understanding our time-streams properly, you should be able to select a point in Time where you were in possession of the whistle, and your Present self can borrow it from your Past self. Just make sure to return it to your Past self before you gave it to cmyk, and everything will be fine. Unless that would mustard everything up somehow, in which case ignore me.
In a comically tragic turn of events, Addams didn't die. You can help her here.

Does the basement ever end?

Good luck to all the Blitzers out there!

Last comment/question: why .tif? My computer thinks it's supposed to be a font.

I was having trouble getting iOS to load the image, and I recalled that in the past I have encountered security restrictions related to what kinds of files can or cannot be transferred from a server to a browser. .tif is a rarely-used image file type. It's not an image, or a font either, I just needed a filetype that wouldn't be blocked by the server or the browser.

FTFY's...are essentially original works. OTTifications, if you will. I wouldn't exactly ignore them.

Agreed... mostly :) What if the FTFY is just fixing indentation, or adding a mismatched parenthesis? What if it's a quote that isn't a FTFY, but they change the formatting by mistake? One should be counted as a direct quote, the other shouldn't, right? But how does the algorithm distinguish the two?
I think this originated with a discussion of word-counts and for generating useful metrics like @Kieryn's QI (quote index) ... but let me know if there is another type of application.

BTW, Zanclean Zodiac looks fascinating... I'm looking forward to Blitzing through it from the start!

mrob, how do you handle GLR knowing you?

(I didn't get the meaning of the question)

That's the sense that I mean. Just as we could wonder, how does Randall handle all of us peeking into his life? ...

Got it. Well, then my answer is, I guess it was a bit odd. xkcd was my favourite comic, and the only other webcomic of any kind I ever checked was Dilbert. I got a tweet in the very late-nip, early-mornip hours:
Image

I only saw this because my iPad's Twitter app was set to sound an audible alarm on any mentions. I read the tweet, didn't believe it (this BeeStapler must be a troll). I hadn't checked the OtherComics in a wip or two, so I hit the xkcd tab, saw OtherComic 1047, and realized that it must have just gone up, and the tweet must be from an xkcd fan... moreover, a kind xkcd fan alerting me that my website is about to get a lot of traffic . I scrambled to add some xkcd-RELATED links, and eventually created an online RIES query.
A lot of people asked questions like Did you say "sudo mention me in your webcomic?". I remember wondering whether Randall Munroe and I ever saw each other (we do live fairly close) without realizing it. I sent an email, as I always do when I hear that someone has used and appreciates one of my programs; I asked for any feedback, requests or bug reports.
I've been contacted by pretty well-known mathematicians and other sorts of scientific and/or nerdy people, and I guess it always feels about the same... I'm glad that they like my thing (whatever they contacted me about), and glad that my website is serving that purpose.

Thanks @ggh, for confirming my guess. Your new quotes are great too. It might surprise you to know that I have seen that film, and I recognized the quotes, but I did not know what film those quotes were from either. So thanks for the Spoiler: :)

Yes, I thought about that for a long time. They were definitely very very fast. My algorithm selects the apocryphal and meteor frames by looking at the minute. It only polls once every 10 seconds, so actually producing the 10-second ONGs would be a bit unreliable. Maybe I'll go to 1-minute intervals, which is how they're listed by @mscha. I do have a couple mips to change my mind :D
If you're interested in such things, make sure you're tuned in from 18:00 to 19:00 UTC on 2013-03-30 (whenever that occurs in your time zone), when the three apocryphal frames will be shown at 15-minute intervals between frames 255 and 256.

Okay, thanks! I thought it was a little familiar. I collect the OTTifications and tag them with OtherComic and frame numbers, which helps me with a lot of the quirky things that I do.

Fun fact: I learned a lot of PHP, SQL, how to thwart XSS attacks, and even some of the inner workings of the Great Firewall of China. It's a ch*rped-up, m*stardy world out there, kids
