Yep — you don't have to keep trying to post on the 16th and 40th positions on the page — all of your posts now bear the title Bboz dr yndn, bboz dr yndn :D (provided the Use Username option is enabled).

I was surprised with how many #16 and #40 posts I got, especially considering most were by accident. I only consciously tried to get two or three...

My uses are primarily video games, media, and graphic processing (Photoshop, illustrator, some flash and 3d) Looking to spend in the neighborhood of 500-700US. Any suggestions on the best place to look/options?

I always use Newegg.com for part selection, and still usually end up purchasing from there after doing some price comparisons (usually Amazon, Frys, etc). I know there was some discussion last wip when SBN was talking about getting a new computer, with a recommendation for a website that helps you assemble a parts list. I never had a chance to use it yet, but I'll go look for it and let you know my thoughts.

As far as component recommendations, I'll probably put some together in a PM so as to not clutter up the thread with a bunch of off-topic links and whatnot.

So out of curiosity and maybe a teeny bit of procrastination >.>, I investigated the previously reported error.

This turned out several interesting observations.
First, Javascript is very polite when it comes to accessing non-existent elements : it simply returns "undefined". No error, no message, nothing.

Second, user profiles differ slightly whether they have an avatar or not.
An avatared user (mine for the sake of the example) looks like this :

Code: Select all

<dl class="postprofile" id="profile3566368" style=";;;;;;position:relative;top:2px;;position:relative;top:231px;">
    <dt>
        <a href="./memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=438923">
            <img src="./download/file.php?avatar=438923_1396456743.png" width="128" height="150" alt="User avatar"/>
        </a>
        <br/>
        <a href="./memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=438923">karhell</a>
    </dt>
    ...
</dl>

Whereas a non-avatared user (here : jimbobmacdoodle) looks like this :

Code: Select all

<dl class="postprofile" id="profile3566378" style=";;;;;;;;;;">
    <dt>
        <a href="./memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=382912">jimbobmacdoodle</a>
    </dt>
    ...
</dl>

Turns out the script was looking for the fifth element in that <dt> tag (there are invisible text nodes before the <a> tags, it seems) which, in the second case is completely non-existent. Javascript then "helpfully" returns undefined instead of the username, and the whole thing comes crashing down.

Fortunately that kind of thing is easily fixed (thanks again, mrob :))

not sure whether that was interesting to anyone...

I was wondering if anyone would catch that. :wink:

But it can be any type of pope. Or no type of pope, as it's obviously optional. Sadly, I don't have the ability to follow my own decree while in the office, but if by some stroke of bad luck we're still on this NP when I get home in about 6 oldpix I'll probably make one (or 3).

New post at http://beanishlang.wordpress.com/2014/0 ... orpus-iii/ but to my paste the final thoughts:

The conclusion is that I need to study in much finer detail the dubious translations, particularly for frames 2671 and 2728. Please keep posting your suggestions (if you study the corpus I put on Github, all I have there are elipsis…) -- what do you think they literally say in frame 2671 and 2728?

Now, for something different. Maybe it’s the literary critic in me, but I have been wondering if the game we are playing is the same for, say, identify time and place. We could do more for “deciphering” Beanish, but unless someone finds an algorithm to derive it from whatever language there is, the data we have is simply not enough (I had many crazy, crazy ideas I know wouldn’t work well, going as far as a Naïve Bayes to classify words in their parts of speech using people guesses of translations). Maybe we are not supposed to find the rules but actually find the signal in the noise, i.e., develop a grammar that fits the language we have so far? Really, has it been discussed? I look back and seem to have always worked under the assumption that the grammar was there to decrypt.

But I will try to go on with my mumblings, even though life knocks at the door asking me to stop playing that much and focus on work…

If you want to ask me anything, feel free to send a private message or comment on my blog, I might miss it on the topics (particularly on the OTT ;))

Wow... we have gotten pretty slow.

How is that "posts/hr" column calculated? It must be doing some sort of smoothing or something, there's no way that we haven't had a single page since 1326 that's been done in less than 4 newpix. mrob, dunno if you've already explained how this works or not, but I see that NP1254-NP1258 (5 distinct NP) happened on 20130726.16:xx:xx, meaning that at least 200 posts happened within a "1 hour" period, but the posts/hr column never even hit 40 until NP1274 (8 oldpix later), and even then just barely and not for long.

Exodies himself has had a couple of doubleposts recently, and I haven't seen much angst over it. That being said, you make a good point, so obviously additional posts should be edited into the original one in cases of possible double-postage.

That's actually pretty good.

I wonder what the longest possible Lorentz chain is right now. I also wonder exactly how it works, whether it's based on sheer numbers, or if he periodically goes in and selects a bunch of options, or something else entirely.

I try to edit in additional comments but I also keep my eye on the future when I do post1 to make sure I don't double post. I doesn't bother me to see others' double posts, but it also doesn't bother me to avoid them myself. Therefore, since I know it bothers some people and I could care less, I carefully care for my fellow OTTers and take care to avoid being careless when possible. Not that I care whether others feel one way or the other, I just figure this way I'm least likely to offend/annoy anyone, including myself. Though if I had an opinion on the matter, my logic would also take that into account. It's like SBN's first rule of life- I take myself into account in my decision-making algorithm, its just that in my case the result is the same either way.

This has been a wonderful post about practically nothing :)

Ooh, it's Caswallon! Hi! Image
Nice to see you too, Purplepants! :) Don't get lost in the footnote labyrinths1!
I don't have much of a problem with double-posts, personally, but triple-posts and quadruple-posts get a bit unmolpish to scroll through. I don't mind single blitz-responses at all if they're separated by other people posting. :D

Indeed, it isn't an issue unless you're actively avoiding the present (and therefore can't/won't check).

(And the reason it was an issue in the first place - other than being annoying to some people - is that it is explicitly against the forum rules)

Oh dear, I see that I ninja'd Image @Link on the AUTOMOME developments. Great minds code alike :D and suffice it to say, we've both been encouraged by each other's developments.

I have finished implementing a REDUNDANT version of AUTOMOME. Like the original by @Link, my version is a nice friendly webpage with a Cuegan on the top that you can click, and links at the bottom for text-only output. Unlike @Link's version, mine is written in Perl and vocabulary and snowclone templates are all in a single datafile. To remind you that you're on a different AUTOMOME, the Cuegan are different.

Other AUTOMOME changes:
  • Added AMTOO, BEANETTE, ROSETTA; and doubled the number of CUEGAN names to make them happen more often
  • Changed SH*T to M*STARD in one place
  • "THIS IS PHOTOSHOPPED" snowclone now substitutes other perfect-tense verbs for PHOTOSHOPPED (previously only adjectives were used, and the original AUTOMEME is that way too, but I see no reason why)

karhell wrote: So out of curiosity and maybe a teeny bit of procrastination >.>, I investigated the previously reported error ...

Great detective work @karhell! :) If you look in the source code of the script, you'll find a large block comment right above the bananascanner function, showing examples of the HTML. However, the avatar-less example isn't there yet, but I'll add one.
    There are similar block comments in no-tinytext.user.js and spoiler-opener.user.js which I added while figuring out the format of [size} and [spoiler} tags, respectively.

macraw83 wrote: How is that "posts/hr" column calculated?

It is explained in the introductory paragraphs of that page. In particular I call your attention to the parts that say, All statistics are 'decaying averages' with a 24-hour half-life. and the stats are only recomputed each hour, so they repeat for two or more lines when there is more than one Newpage per hour..
    By "decaying average" I actually mean exponential smoothing with a smoothing factor chosen such that the half-life is 24 hours: Each datum's weight decreases by a factor of 2 every 24 newpix.
    The average is recalculated once per hour:

st = αR + (1-α)st-1

where R is the post rate for the last Newpage. To achieve a 24-hour half-life, the value α = 1/34 ≈ ln(2)/24 is used.
    Since the average is updated once per hour, and Newpages sometimes take more than one hour to complete, the average is often recomputed more than once per Newpage. Nevertheless, the average is only printed to ott-rate-stats.txt once per Newpage.
NP1254-NP1258 (5 distinct NP) happened on 20130726.16:xx:xx, meaning that at least 200 posts happened within a "1 hour" period, but the posts/hr column never even hit 40 until NP1274 (8 oldpix later)

For those infamous Newpages, the postrate R was, as you point out, about 200. However, during that hour the formula above was computed only once, because only one hour elapsed. That calculation occurred at Newpix 3090 which is 20130726.17:00 in the US Eastern time-zone, or 20130726.21:00 UTC. If the rate were actually 200, then the calculation would have been:

st = 200/34 + (33/34)*26.19 ≈ 31.3

But actually the number we see is 32.29, a bit higher but close enough. This calculation occurred on Newpage 1259, but because of the complex way I parse the OTT and output the lines to this and the other reports, it doesn't appear in ott-rate-stats.txt until the line for Newpage 1260.
    If you want "instantaneous" rate stats, or a different half-life, I suppose I could do something. I'm a bit reluctant to add lots of columns but one or two would be okay. I could recompute the decaying average once per minute (the highest resolution possible) to make shorter-halflife stats more useful.

I THINK, THEREFORE I BLINDPOST

Postby Link » Tue Apr 08, 2014 9:06 pm UTC

AAH, NINJA'D! BY mrob27 NONETHELESS!

Semi-blindposting here (1NP), because I bring news!

ANNOUNCING AUTOMOME 1.0

Since I managed to find some free time today and felt too steambottlish to work on the essay I'm supposed to write, I made some seaish updates to AUTOMOME;
  • The requested "copyable formats" option has been added
  • There are LOTS of new memes, courtesy of mrob27 (and one courtesy of myself)
  • There's even more vocabulary now!

Since AUTOMOME is feature-rich enough and the code is finally rather steakish, I've decided to version-bump it to 1.0!

ETA: link to AUTOMOME (as if it needs repeating). Also keught up with the last NP, but out of time now. Image

NoMouse wrote:Neat! I like that the tree and the river have the exactly opposite gender. I wonder what would happen if a Czech river met a Portuguese river. Is that how streams are made? I remember this was pain in the ass when I learned German. The genders were almost never the same as in Czech.

I may mangle this, because I read it a while ago, but I think Guy Deutscher mentions in one of his books that the genders of inanimate objects flavour how we think of them. When asked about the traits of a good bridge, the speakers of languages with male-gendered bridges tended to come up with descriptors like strong and reliable, while those whose native language had female-gendered bridges made more mention of beauty and gracefulness. Also, when asked to read the part of a spoon in say, a children's story, the reader would tend to choose a pretend voice consistent with the linguistic gender.

jimbobmacdoodle wrote:On the language-gender front, German has my favourite example of non-sensical gender giving to nouns. It has three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter. So, Mann (man) is masculine, Frau (woman) is feminine, and Maedchen (girl - sorry no umlauts easy to hand) is... um... neuter.

You might enjoy this - I think this little "German" story by Mark Twain might have already been brought up in this thread.
Spoiler:
TALE OF THE FISHWIFE AND ITS SAD FATE [2]

2. I capitalize the nouns, in the German (and ancient English) fashion.
It is a bleak Day. Hear the Rain, how he pours, and the Hail, how he rattles; and see the Snow, how he drifts along, and of the Mud, how deep he is! Ah the poor Fishwife, it is stuck fast in the Mire; it has dropped its Basket of Fishes; and its Hands have been cut by the Scales as it seized some of the falling Creatures; and one Scale has even got into its Eye, and it cannot get her out. It opens its Mouth to cry for Help; but if any Sound comes out of him, alas he is drowned by the raging of the Storm. And now a Tomcat has got one of the Fishes and she will surely escape with him. No, she bites off a Fin, she holds her in her Mouth -- will she swallow her? No, the Fishwife's brave Mother-dog deserts his Puppies and rescues the Fin -- which he eats, himself, as his Reward. O, horror, the Lightning has struck the Fish-basket; he sets him on Fire; see the Flame, how she licks the doomed Utensil with her red and angry Tongue; now she attacks the helpless Fishwife's Foot -- she burns him up, all but the big Toe, and even she is partly consumed; and still she spreads, still she waves her fiery Tongues; she attacks the Fishwife's Leg and destroys it; she attacks its Hand and destroys her also; she attacks the Fishwife's Leg and destroys her also; she attacks its Body and consumes him; she wreathes herself about its Heart and it is consumed; next about its Breast, and in a Moment she is a Cinder; now she reaches its Neck -- he goes; now its Chin -- it goes; now its Nose -- she goes. In another Moment, except Help come, the Fishwife will be no more. Time presses -- is there none to succor and save? Yes! Joy, joy, with flying Feet the she-Englishwoman comes! But alas, the generous she-Female is too late: where now is the fated Fishwife? It has ceased from its Sufferings, it has gone to a better Land; all that is left of it for its loved Ones to lament over, is this poor smoldering Ash-heap. Ah, woeful, woeful Ash-heap! Let us take him up tenderly, reverently, upon the lowly Shovel, and bear him to his long Rest, with the Prayer that when he rises again it will be a Realm where he will have one good square responsible Sex, and have it all to himself, instead of having a mangy lot of assorted Sexes scattered all over him in Spots.
