ETA: If we're going to write in other languages, it might be helpful to blitzers/ketchuppers to label what the languages are to enable faster translation, or even add a spoiler with the English translation. I think this is close to a Blitzus Annoyus scenario without that help.

SUDDENLY, PUPPIES!

Postby mrob27 » Fri Jul 04, 2014 5:17 am UTC

第二十二章

(chapter 21)

A gull squawks. BlueCrab runs back in the water (Morobu thinks she was frightened by the bird), then emerges moments later. "Just staying hydrated. Important for us crabs, you know."
  "Ahh, yes."
The crab, knowing that Morobu is a pilgrim of Searchfu, and in distress, strikes a balance between outright help and silence. She invokes a universally-shared ancient oral tradition.
"It is told that in another Time and Place, a man and a woman sat on a beach. They began to wonder about their world, and after some Time had passed it became obvious that things were getting quite strange indeed. What did they do?"
Morobu knows the story well. "Megan and Cueball went up. They headed up to the mountains, and they found their answers there. We all know this!"
BlueCrab flutters her maxillae. "Yes, Morobu-san, they went up, but before that, they turned Left and walked along the beach."
"Yes... but I want to go up. And I have been going up..." (now frowning a bit) "... to a sea-shore..."
  There is a pause.
"Try something for me. Step back from the waves for a bit, then come back." Morobu gets up, and does as suggested.
  "Where does it seem highest?"
Morobu frowns. "Here. Next to you. By the edge of the water. And something must be causing this!"
The little crab points her other claw towards the far end of the beach, as a distant wave breaks. "Want to find out?"
  "Yes."
  He already has his bag.

Thanks for answering my What-If, @ChronosDragon!

I tend to agree... I believe @AluisioASG wrote something like, "Write something in a language you have not used before. Or even use your native language."

Soy escribe en espanol, pero mi vocabulario es muy pequeno. El gato hablan mucho mejor.

That's about as well as I can write in any other language, but I can generally read most Spanish, Portuguese or Italian without missing too much. Beanish on the other hand, all I see is unintelligible scribbles. How all y'all make sense of that gibberish is Greek to me.

THE PUN IS A LIE

Postby ChronosDragon » Fri Jul 04, 2014 7:04 am UTC

Oh my lord

I just finished the hotdog called "Brothers: The Tale of Two Sons" which I picked up on a Steam sale. I was blown away.

To quote my steam review:

me wrote:I laughed. I cried. I sobbed. This game is an emotional roller coaster of the highest caliber. It chronicles the journey of two brothers to find the cure for their father's illness, taking you through a magical fantasy landscape that capitalizes on the finest fidelity of the unreal engine. The storytelling is the finest I have ever seen, truly uplifting the medium of video games to that of any other fine art. These are not some one dimensional NPC characters. This is a world alive, filled with emotion and heartbreak and moments of pure joy.

The gameplay almost takes a background role in this game, but it is incredibly strong nonetheless. As the game recommends, it is indeed best played on a controller—the rumble effects alone, carefully used to emphasize the environment, make it worthwhile. As you control the characters, you become so intertwined in their identity that it feels like you practically become them.

I'm not a very emotional person. I cry perhaps once a decade. This game brought me to full-on tears. Do not continue your life without this game.

Honestly, I cannot recommend anything more highly. If you have an organized sand device that can play hotdogs and a steam account, get this game. It is phenomenal beyond words.

No, just regular ETA:ch*rping mustard. At the place where the server-timeaccessor-botcastle is, everyone went here, where I am now. Nobody stayed there and they propably turned all electricity off. It should work again in a few hours.
ETA: not true. They remember that I need the server. For some reason it stopped updating its IP. I must find out why.

If I changed the URL I would announce it on the OTT, relink my posts, and support the old one as long as possible.

ETA: Treeish to see edo popping in, and ergman drawing! Hmm, mikrit may be on to me, and good to see CD in great form. I'm a little disturbed by custardful as a positive. There's the expression "and then it all went to custard," and that's really bad - or is that just a down-under thing to say?

ETA2: I wrote an email to my local grocery store. The subject was "Breaking Bag". I giggled.
Yappo, good luck with your mountain!
Blue Crab, all you say is true. :)
and azule, here's my simple procedure for the tintpix. I don't know how to use photoshop, so I can't tell you about specific tools, but in words, I did this:
Spoiler:
First I outlined a matte for the sky and faded it to 42% opacity, giving me this:
2422tintBlueMatte.jpg
2422tintBlueMatte.jpg (9.59 KiB) Viewed 9744 times
Through that matte, I multiplied the rgb pixel values by [0, 0, 1].
Next I created this matte:
2422tintPurpleMatte.jpg
2422tintPurpleMatte.jpg (9.97 KiB) Viewed 9744 times
and through it I multiplied by [.9, .7, .9].
The last matte was slightly more involved: I took the whitepoint down to .139 to get rid of the darkness in the sky, eroded it by one pixel and blurred it to bulk up the tree, and then gamma'd it up a bit because it was too bulky. I inverted this matte to get this:
2422tintGreenMatte.jpg
and through that matte I multiplied by [.5, 1, .2] to give the foliage a green tint at the edges. You may notice that it also gives Cue and the border an unintentional green tint. I was being sloppy.

Blitzgirl, be wary while punsawing that one, for obvious reasons.

hey, my OTcolored where they're underwater! good times.

can second the Brothers recommendation, a clever and beautiful game, and the lack of language didn't bother me. It's actually a pretty Time-like adventure, albeit with classic fantasy. Two people who are very close head off into the mountains and then...
Only problems for me were some cutscenes towards the end that I feel should have been gameplay.
I made my avatar, Buffygirl hatted it, Yappo smileyed it and ggh taroted it!
I've changed, witnessing this thing so beautiful

SBN, your post made me cry - just beautiful. Where does the quote come from?

It's from Secrets of the Cat by Barbara Holland. (And yes, slightly edited, presumably everyone knows which changes I made.)

The two largest wolpies enjoyed our town's parade this morning. They think it is wonderful of everyone to come out and admire them like that. Smallest wolpy is old enough that crowds and noises are not her favorite things, so she stayed home and enjoyed the peace and quiet. She's also part of why I have that quote at hand. I know I'll have to help her over her own last bad mile sooner than I want to. Not yet, but too soon for me.

Mountainish update: Unfortunately, we now know we were not successful in our bid. We don't know who got it, but it's not the end of the world, we just have to hope it's someone who wants what's best for the land and not just some greedy rich person...

ETA: not true. They remember that I need the server. For some reason it stopped updating its IP. I must find out why.

This was time-mustard!

ddclient has a minimal time of 30 seconds between updates. And the last IP update was at... 15:15:35 26-Dec-2018. And the 30 seconds since then have not passed yet.

I wonder, why.

Speaking of which, the last message was completely ignored (nobody even tried to enhance the image?). Not very surprising because it did't reveal almost anything. But there is another one now. I'd just like to remind that there is a seaish ottification waiting to be found.

It will be neat when the Newpages sync with the newpix. And the year! Too bad we can't have both, but now we have two more arbitrary things to celebrate.

and whoa at the frizzle lovin, and La Petite's beanish abilities.

It's not surprising LaPetite took to the Beanish culture so quickly - she does have a hat, after all.

第二十三章

(chapter 22)

The little crab speaks with such confidence that Morobu sees no reason to doubt her. He bows to BlueCrab, who watches as he rises, turns left, and walks away silently along the shore. "I hope he finds answers," she says to herself, slipping sideways back under the gentle waves.
Something is familiar about all of this, thinks Morobu.
Where I expect to find the top of a mountain I find the sea. And the land seems to slope up, but somehow I am going down?
Even now, Morobu looks at the sea, and though the horizon is level the sea itself seems to have an odd tilt to it. That can't be right. I don't understand what the sea is doing.
Morobu continues along the beach, wondering how everything seems to be sloping the wrong way.
He comes to a point where an outcropping of rock juts towards the sea, blocking the view of the beach beyond. He hops up this, and suddenly sees a robot partway along the beach on the other side. Scrambling down the other side (which feels like climbing), he continues along this new stretch of beach; the bot does not seem to notice.
As Morobu gets closer, he can see it is not one of the mountain-painters of Fujisan, and this bot looks familiar. When he finally gets close enough for shouting, he calls out: "Imagebot!"

Presumably the mile and human-height are RELATED. How many Smoots to a mile?

945, but why should that be? The factor of 1000 seems arbitrary, but of course it's not, it's a power of ten.
The way I figure it is as follows:
  • The stride (distance between steps) or pace (twice that) are similar to a person's height. [Citation needed], or just look at da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man".
  • The units of mile and hour are related because of historical context. If a glorp is the amount of distance you can travel in a reasonable amount of time and a wuxle is the amount of time that takes, then "1 glorp per wuxle" is a typical travel speed. When the units of mile and hour were established, the typical speeds were walking, running and horseback riding, and a reasonable amount of time to spend travelling somewhere was a (small but not tiny) fraction of a day.
  • 1 mile is the length of 1000 paces, making it a convenient choice for the length unit. There are also reasons why the specific length of time (1 hour) was chosen for a time-division unit, though it's harder to pin down, see Hour.

Also kind of related to all the above are heartbeats, step rates, feet and seconds:
  • The pulse rate is similar to walking (step) rate for physiological reasons. It's a very crude approximation: one is about 2 or 3 times the other. I found no comparisons across many different sizes of animal, but [1] and [2] might be of interest.
  • If a pace takes a similar amount of time as a heartbeat, and an hour is similar to the amount of time to walk a mile, the ratio of paces per mile will be close to the ratio of heartbeats per hour. One could also consider the units of foot and yard, which are convenient human-body-sized units of length to go along with the heartbeat and second.
  • The "factor of 2 or 3" and other crude approximations happen to cancel out in such a way as to make it 1000 paces per mile, but 3600 seconds (or heartbeats) per hour. I think that is pure coincidence.
