One post too late for a goat ONG, bothasar_p... Although the decree part is very correct.

There is no need to consider multiple entities "me" and "simulation of me". These folks believe that any society would eventually develop to the point where they're simulating the universe Matrix-style, except that instead of a physical body hooked up to a computer, the whole thing is in the computer. They also believe that there's no good way to figure out if you're "in the simulation" or "in a real physical universe". The really out-on-a-limb believers say that the two are equivalent: a simulated universe is just as real as a real one. And (weak point) they believe that the number of Matrix-like simulations will inevitably be very very large, and therefore it's more likely than not that you're in the Matrix. That is a weak link because it involves observational selection effects. But the Roko's Basilisk fearers believe it, and then it's a simple step to imagine any number of wacky things.
If they buy into the entire argument (including the Pascal's Wager nature of your own choice, and the hypothesized AI's utilitarian-driven decision theory) then there are other flaws that are addressed the same way as in Pascal's Wager and as in normal blackmail scenarios (respectfully).

IN THE MOVIE "ONGING" THEY PUNSAW SCRUMPTIOUS DONUTS
INTO THE OTC AND THEY SEEMINGLY MUSTARD THE SKYCIRCLE.
IS THIS POSSIBLE, AND HOW MANY SCRUMPTIOUS DONUTS WOULD IT TAKE?

(Edit: Image)
Hmm. Is there even an outermost real universe or is it simulations all the way out? What does real even mean? If a universe can be simulated by really clever programmers, then what does it take to make a real one? And most importantly, where can I see the movie "ONGING"? Can we all go see it together in Germany?

I think "ONGING" the movie exists somewhere in the future. Obviously we have to create it in the After-Now and then send it back into the pastpages for our selves of the Here-Before to watch, or somesuch temporal shenanigans.

Wait, what does this all have to do with Roko's Basilisk?

The German caption „Childrenâs Abbildung für Ihre konzipieren, melden, Postkarte, Album, Abdeckung, Einklebebuch, usw. an.“ can only be understood when you poorly translate it to English; otherwise it reads: “Kinderâs image for your to draft something, to report something, post card, album, faceplate, glue-in book, and so on, at.” (Wasn't there a rule that a sentence should not end with a preposition?)

I'm fairly sure that is a holdover from Latin that pedants try to apply to English speakers. However, it is extremely rare to end a sentence that way, as most uses which do end a sentence in that manner do not count as offending the rule.

Well, looks like it should be backformed to "logos". "Can't logos". And, it sounds a bit like lego. ;)

I think the main rule to English is that, if you make the word up, you can spell it pretty much how you like--as long as you get the idea (and roots) correct, and are not retroninjaspoilered by a semencoffeecancerbaconcustardstarsandbabiesonice attack.

Dracomax wrote:Verb phrases. They are ok.

Verbing weirds language.

Idle musings (perhaps too much musing is why I'm over 1000 pages behind?) If amongst her numerous titles is "Blitzgirl the Fast", does that make me "bmonk the deliberate"? (or, alternatively, "the dilatory," or "the unhurried")

If you want to watch a young woman getting in love with vampires just watch TrueBlood. Those vampires don't sparkle (they start smoking in the sun though) and they actually eviscerate a lot of people. Live vampires should. TrueBlood has actual acting, interesting characters and good story arcs.

Reasoning with Vampires goes into myriad ways the books (much less the movies) are badly written--poor plots, poor character development (with holes, especially in chests), poor punctuation and grammar. . . .

Having become a Wizard on n.p. 2183, the Yellow Piggy retroactively appointed his honorable self a Temporal Wizardly Piggy on n.p.1488, not to be effective until n.p. 2183, thereby avoiding a partial temporal paradox. Since he couldn't afford two philosophical PhDs to rule on the title.

Eternal Density wrote:Is there even an outermost real universe or is it simulations all the way out? ...

That's where I always go when they start saying "you're most probably a simulation". If there are a lot of them, why not infinite? Infinite recursion is almost simpler (and thus, preferable by Occam's razor) than a single level of simulation.
There's this rather shaky premise, called the Self-indication assumption (SIA) that is used to refute the Doomsday argument. The trouble with SIA is that "all possible observers" includes the possibility of an infinite number of observers. Statistics gets even stranger than it normally is, when involving a random sampling from an infinite population. Suppose that infinite population P of possible observers includes two infinite subsets A and B, each leading to a different conclusion about life, the Universe and everything. Which is more likely? The answer is: whichever one you want! Set A and set B are equally infinite, and either can be made to dominate a survey by changing the order in which samples are drawn.

  1, 2, 4, 3, 6, 8, 5, 10, 12, 7, 14, 16, 9, 18, 20, ...
All positive integers occur exactly once. But there are twice as many even numbers!

On the other hand, hypothesizing that the universe goes on forever (rather than just the 46 billion or so light-years that we can see) does make it a lot easier to explain the mystery of the origin of life. In a suitably large universe (say 10googol light-years or larger), any needed molecule will be formed somewhere, even if purely by chance. And it's simple — Occam's razor FTW — and follows our a priori experience of continually thinking the Universe is small, then discovering we were wrong..

And most importantly, where can I see the movie "ONGING"? Can we all go see it together in Germany?

We've been seeing it, but the framerate is kinda low.

AluisioASG wrote:I once read [sic] that a singularity (specifically, the final moment before a Big Crunch) would have enough computational power to simulate infinite universes at an infinite speed. That might very weel been here.

Oh yes, that's Dyson's eternal intelligence. It works in a classical Hubble-style "heat death" scenario as well as in the "big crunch". Here is a representative statement of the idea from 1996.
Unfortunately, it turns out not to be possible for two reasons: the first is zero-point energy, which interferes once you get really close to absolute zero. The second problem is that dark energy is causing the universe's expansion to accelerate. Dyson envisioned distributed computation, with compute elements scattered throughout the universe and communicating with each other; but the accelerating universe means that these parts will eventually recede past each others' event horizons.
Our only hope (and what Kurzweil is relying on) is a scenario like that in the ending of Asimov's The Last Question, which I won't describe because spoilers. It's a lovely story, read it :D

Wait, what does this all have to do with Roko's Basilisk?

I dunno, but Baldo's Raptorcat is grinning fiendishly.

I think the main rule to English is that, if you make the word up, you can spell it pretty much how you like--as long as you get the idea (and roots) correct, and are not retroninjaspoilered by a semencoffeecancerbaconcustardstarsandbabiesonice attack.

Reasoning with Vampires goes into myriad ways the books (much less the movies) are badly written--poor plots, poor character development (with holes, especially in chests), poor punctuation and grammar. . . .

Verbing doesn't weird language. People weird language.

A Desert Bus example of forcing someone to see Twilight repeatedly, for a good cause:
In DBFH2, donations were made to make Matt see Twilight. He had to see it four times in total. The next year, he pledged to see New Moon as many times as possible during a day if the donation total rose to 100K. He had to see it six times in all.
For Desert Bus 5, Matt insisted that he only go and see Breaking Dawn if Desert Bus For Hope could reach $500,000 lifetime donations (which required about $57,000 this year) within 36 hours of the marathon starting. If they did it within 24 hours (James's shift), James would have to go and see it with him. The donations almost made it within the 24-hour mark, and James agreed to see it anyway.

A brief reketchup. Dunno if I'll be able to go further back in time, but I'm still here!

There are many ways to time. But really, you didn't abandon the OTT, you just allowed us to wait for it.

Doesn't that just refer to "The Long Ong"? There were several hundred "Short Ongs" just waiting for their moment of cinematic glory.

And we shouldn't forget about the "Very Long Ongs".

I spy a Christmas store banner at the top of xkcd.com but looks like it's just one reused from last yip.

New AuthorComic. It's about railcastles.

Edit: I don't know where to put this, but the RSS Feed is advertising the xkcd store, using a lot of text, not just a banner. "New things" do not include Time merch.

Edit2: I thought "were" didn't look right.

I get the feeling that bmonk was referring to the plots of the Twilight books here (that's what the blog is critiquing) and you interpreted it as being about the series True Blood is based on instead. From what I've heard the Charlaine Harris books are pretty well-written and don't suffer the same issues.
