  • supports images with indexed colormaps.
  • the colormap is still indexed after loading the image
  • copying nonindexed data from outside autoconverts it to the colormap in use
  • easy moving things around
  • easy single pixel editing
  • no alpha.
  • no layers
  • is a free software (because I'm in the process of removing my dependencies on nonfree software)

GIMP:
  • supports images with indexed colormaps. → Yeah.
  • the colormap is still indexed after loading the image → Yeah.
  • copying nonindexed data from outside autoconverts it to the colormap in use

  • easy moving things around → Yeah.
  • easy single pixel editing → Yeah. Just choose the right pen.
  • no alpha. → You can switch it off.
  • no layers → You don't need to use them.
  • is a free software → It's GPLed, so it is and will always remain Free Software.
Downsides:
  • It's not simple.
  • It's a memory hog.
If you like and if you ever happen to visit the Sustainable University (e.g. in Feb 2015 :) ) I can show you some GIMP tricks.

Yes, however copying indexed data from outside to an indexed or nonindexed image results in a black rectangle.

  • easy single pixel editing → Yeah. Just choose the right pen.
I had problems with this. And with pens in general. For example the size. I can select from 0 to 1000. but from 44 to 1000 the size doesn't get any bigger and stays at 19 pixels. Actually, that number doesn't have to be 44. That depends on the hardness setting. For hardness =1.0, size 0.1 gives 3 pixels, 0.5 - 7 pixels, 1.0 - 15 pixels, 1.5 - still 15 pixels, 3 - 17 pix, 5 - 19 pix, anything between 5 and 1000 - 19 pixels. I have no idea where these sizes come from.

  • no alpha. → You can switch it off.
But then I can;t have transparency at all. I like having a color (for example white) to behave as transparent sometimes and sometimes not. Something even betteh would be having larger indexas overlay smaller, or reversely. Or having the pixel indexes ORed, ANDed or XORed whe moving things around. I have somewhere a disk with an Amiga icon editor that has this ability.

  • no layers → You don't need to use them.
Pastign anything puts it in a new temporary layer. To move things around they have to be cut out of their layer.

But I still like GIMP. And I'm still learning how to do things in it. And how to do them without wasting time.

The most molpish solution would be having two programs, Gimp and something simpler, faster.
I'm also new learning tricks on the non-digital side. For example, how do you think the frames containing Time frames were drawn?
If you like and if you ever happen to visit the Sustainable University (e.g. in Feb 2015 :) ) I can show you some GIMP tricks.
I always like to learn new tricks.

ETA: a BIG practice on doing this was the animated part of this film. A few drawings (2.5 A4 sheets) were enough to make a few minutes of animation. The animation starts at 3:39 and ends at 7:06. English subtitles can be turned on. At the beginning there are just talking heads but then it gets better. I learned a lot when doing that.

I'm afraid we are drifting off-topic,
thus this …

I just re-checked this: For me it works flawlessly.

GIMP can do such thinks, but then you need layers.
(At least that's how I am doing such things. Maybe there are other rivers tricks in GIMP. I don't know everything about GIMP.)

Just a moment … wait for it …

Yes, you can select the same tricks in the “Tool Options” dialogue for the “Paintbrush” tool. Just change the “Mode” from “Normal” to something like “Darken only”.

But …

Sorry, these tricks don't seem to work with indexed images. Maybe they do, but then I don't know how.

balthasar_s wrote:

Pastign anything puts it in a new temporary layer.

Just one “anchor” click, and it is part of the main layer.

balthasar_s wrote:To move things around they have to be cut out of their layer.

If you use “Select→Float” (Ctrl+Shift+L) you can just move the selected stuff around and anchor it with one more click.

Stumbled across something interesting todip, a boxbot that does what the script in Othercomic 576 is set to do: buy random cheap objects with free shipping off eBay (or wherever) and get them sent to you. The signup website is called http://bobcatinabox.com/ of course. The short video series (under the Video tab) made by a man who signed up for the service is pretty amusing. He didn't get any bobcats or raptorcats sent to him, but there's always hope I suppose.

Yeah. in the US, they wait until most children don't care anymore. it's sad because I recall in 3rd grade the books most frequently checked out of the library were the books designed to teach children words in other languages. Children want to learn these things fairly young. By the time they are taught them, they don't anymore.

Conference: Two Days?

Postby Sustainabilizer » Mon Dec 22, 2014 9:23 pm UTC

The conference takes form. :)
We now have so many speeches that it will be hard to squeeze them into just one day.
What about extending it to two days?
According to the poll it seems most reasonable to schedule the conference
from Thursday 12 Feb to Friday 13 Feb 2015.

Opinions?

Hello! I have been away from the OTT for the past week due to exams, and it appears that this was not a good week to miss. I really hope I can still attend if I submit something now?

If so: provisional title, "The role of tradition in a sustainable community"

ETA:

We now have so many speeches that it will be hard to squeeze them into just one day.
What about extending it to two days?
According to the poll it seems most reasonable to schedule the conference
from Thursday 12 Feb to Friday 13 Feb 2015.

Opinions?

This seems reasonable, and it would keep things from being too rushed.

I'm coming to this thing no matter what, but two days seems reasonable. The only issue is if people aren't able to get there in time, but I suppose that's what the second day is for.

Is the fading a commentary on the OTT getting cancer?

taixzo, speeches are only required if you want to get paid. Anyone can attend if they want :)

I hope there'll be a drop-in drop-out Google Hangout running! Maybe a camera at the back of the audience, so distant attendees can hear speeches and talk to each other.

You have no idea how extreme. Got the one kid graduated, so I can focus on kid number two (and moving, and new job, and all the other extreme sports going on here.)

Thanks for the well-wishes and other molpish thoughts.

Aren't you twenty-something? How old were you when you started studying German?
28 (29 by the time of the meetup). I don't remember how many years we did German at school but the last year I was 11.
I wish the U.S. started teaching languages that early. I think most place here don't start it till 7th grade (kids are 12-13).

In my area, languages aren't even a mandatory part of the school curriculum until 9th grade, and then the courses are only required to be taken for two of the four years of high school (14-18 years old). I opted for a couple of semesters of introductory courses around 7th-8th grade, but those were elective.

I'm not sure. Might be something like "teaspoonful"?

Probably less than a teaspoonful depending on the size of the facebug.
