Spoiler:
Now Meganzzle are pulling Cueball's rope to raise the Wheeled Thing. (There's tension in those parts of the rope which go up to the epsilonish tree and back down.) Cueball is holding the Wheeled Thing away from the cliff, so it does not crash into it.

Caprice, I like the songs. The first one I like the most. If I understand correctly It's done in a voice-generation software that was designed for the Japanese language. But you make it sing English. I like it.

I once made the Amiga 500 sing "still alive" by using the narrator.device which was designed for English but not for singing. So I understand that this is not as easy as it looks like.

FWIW, I once made the Mac sing Still Alive (and other things) using the speech synthesis which was not designed for singing (this is how I already knew enough about the speech synthesis APIs that making a haiku detector when a friend jokingly asked for one was easy.) :) I've much improved my robot choir since then, but it's still a mess that I won't release publicly until I've rewritten it with a decent interface and some actual knowledge of music built in.

Edit: Holy ch*rp, that was more than five years ago. I *really* should get on that rewrite. (I have fixed various bugs since, but only what I needed to record the songs I wanted it to sing.)

Meganzzle are still pulling. Ms. Frizzle is impressed how well Cueball handles the Wheeled Thing. (The Cueganites are adept in handling bulky things which float down a river, using rope.)

Haiku all the things!
And in writing the haiku,
write some more haiku!

I found some chains of possibly-unintentional haiku made up of intentional ones. It's like sewing a lovingly-conceived pony to a lovingly-conceived monkey to make an inconceivable mistake.

Spoiler:
Also, wait for it.
I fixed your haiku. Perhaps
you made it by chance?

That was a mistake.
I did not mean to Haiku.
Even just the start.

To haiku, or not?
Hello, I am a flower.
And there you have it.

Hello, I am a

But to Watch, to Wait:

But to Watch, to Wait: Is that

Hey, another one: Blitzgirl

Somebody found IT ?

What is IT , really?

the Haiku above.
What is IT , really? IT is

To find? Wait for IT .

I like poetry.
And also: Confusing they
are, all these haikus.

Confusing they are,
all these haikus. More so, if
write them, yoda did

write them, yoda did
It will all be allright, in
the end, right? Guys? Right?

Is this possible???
I see a haiku And I
want to paint it grey,

No, it's a haiku.

Thanks! I do want to learn more, so I guess I should probably take a look at the wiki for now to boost my vocab, rather than trying to blitz the thread and pick it up as it developed in the past. The latter sounds fun in theory, but really time-consuming in practice. The problem with that whole "being pushed inexorably through time" thing.

Angelastic wrote:I somehow didn't notice this post until other people quoted it.

Probably because it was one of my first few posts, so had to go through verification. It looks like once the post was approved, it was put earlier in the thread as befit my posting time, rather than the approval time. Which is kinda silly, but probably only an issue when a needle-pulled thing moves as fast as the OTT.

Hmm, not so much. But when charlie_grumbles started it, the connection was to the Greatest Of All Time, so I reckon you could have some fun with that. Tomorrow's traditions come from today's "some fun with that".

Bitman!

I've worked out an appropriate optimisation (in the UI, rather than anything to do with finding haiku, because it turns out most of the time is spent updating one view made by Apple which people have noted is slow with a lot of items) so that Haiku Detector does not get almost unresponsive (I already stopped it from getting completely unresponsive. But the average user can't tell the difference between almost and completely unresponsive) when there are ten thousand or so haiku. I'll probably release a new version tomorrow! Also, I signed up for a paid Apple Developer account for the first time in about five yips, so I can put it on the app store (for free, I guess, since it's already free anyway, though given that I don't have a day job maybe I ought to charge 99c and then wait yips to earn enough for a sandwich. I just want to be on the app store so I can call myself a Mac developer again.) But I'm still waiting on someone who was going to make an icon for it (because icons these days are very high-res and fancy, so I can't do it myself!) If I don't hear from him soon, would anyone here like to do it? I have some ideas and I'd pay more than enough for a sandwich.

Edit: I just spotted this one go by, from ergman:

CEILING ANTEPENGOAT IS WATCHING YOU HAIKU

Angelastic wrote:… I'll probably release a new version tomorrow!

Could you make it compatible with MacOS 10.6? Your blog states that the present version "should work on Mac OS X 10.6 or later", but when I try to launch it I get that dreaded "you can't run this application, it requires 10.7" message. (I also get that message when I try to run your version from 2013 April 26).
I might be able to make an icon, depending on what you have in mind. LibreOffice Drawing is my tool of choice; if you want something more Gimp-y (hand painting or photo touchup) then I might not be able to do it.

I just realised I did my earlier haiku-count tests without using the OTT-related syllabification dictionary. That prevents many haiku from being detected because if pmgrep doesn't know a word, anything containing that word is disqualified. So here are all of my numbers again:

Code: Select all

     software:  - - - mrob27 - - -        Angelastic
   sourcetext:  Sciscitor   mrob27        Sciscitor
 Newpages
  369                        1639            802

  1486             8608      9697
  2268            14718     16287         ≧ 12812
  2310                      16676

The time it takes for me to scan through the Sciscitor needle_pulled_thing.txt (2268 newpages, no quotes) is now 119 seconds (up from 116 earlier)

Hm, probably you did, some newpages ago.

Welcome, Rosencrantz! Your avatar reminded me, too, of Sandmännchen, although he was dubbed to Swedish when I was a kid, and called John Blund (that would be John Shut-eye, possibly).

Edit to add: Of course, in OTTish he would be John Coma. But that sounds disturbingly like the nickname of a mafia killer. John Coma. He puts people to sleep.

Yeah, I noticed that in my build settings yesterdip. I'll see if I can change it to 10.6 without breaking anything; otherwise I'll update the blog page. I suspect that one of the problems dealing with longer files was something that's since been fixed in the OS, though, so I'm not sure I'd recommend it for 10.6 anyway. I'll check it on my old Macs which have been sitting doing nothing for a while; I think one has 10.9 and the other has whatever the latest version for PowerPC was.

mrob27 wrote:I might be able to make an icon, depending on what you have in mind. LibreOffice Drawing is my tool of choice; if you want something more Gimp-y (hand painting or photo touchup) then I might not be able to do it.

The idea I had is maybe more gimp-y, and a lot seems to be expected of app icons. But I will keep you in mind.

mrob27 wrote:I just realised I did my earlier haiku-count tests without using the OTT-related syllabification dictionary. That prevents many haiku from being detected because if pmgrep doesn't know a word, anything containing that word is disqualified. So here are all of my numbers again:

Code: Select all

     software:  - - - mrob27 - - -        Angelastic
   sourcetext:  Sciscitor   mrob27        Sciscitor
 Newpages
  369                        1639            802
  686              3126      3796
  1486             8608      9697
  2268            14718     16287         ≧ 12812
  2310                      16676

The time it takes for me to scan through the Sciscitor needle_pulled_thing.txt (2268 newpages, no quotes) is now 119 seconds (up from 116 earlier)

We're getting quite close in haiku count; my full count for the Sciscitor export (without any special dictionaries) is 16665. :)

I haven't done a speed test on the release version yet, but Haiku Detector takes longer mainly because it has a GUI; I haven't particularly tried to speed up the actual haiku detecting since I saw that the UI updates were taking much longer than it anyway (it turns out NSCollectionView is slow with many thousands of items. Somebody wrote a faster replacement for it, but I haven't tried that.) But I've made it update less frequently when there are a lot of haiku, and got it to keep the UI responsive and show the incoming haiku as it finds them (the yet-to-be-released version stays scrolled to the bottom of the list of haiku) so users won't get bored or frustrated about its speed. Of course, Outside users will probably only search haiku in small2 things like novels or bibles, anyway, so it'll still be pretty quick.

Both those permalinks take me to the previous comic unless I add the comic number manually. So not quite as perma as they should be.

Apparently there will be a Time II once Hes takes his next plane trip but there will never be a Time2. Spelling is important.
HES wrote:Both those permalinks take me to the previous comic unless I add the comic number manually. So not quite as perma as they should be.
Dunno, right now they work fine here. However they do go to xkcd.com/*stuff* instead of xkcd.com/1525/*stuff* which does indicate they might stop working next mondip, when there is a new comic.

Yeah, we missed her second Blitziversery. :(

She posted something a while back about going to a wedding, I think. Must have been a very long wedding. We need a BlitzGirl Summonus. Who has the "I Can't Believe It's Not Goat's Blood"?

I think the main benefit of being Goat was that you didn't have to think up a decree. :D

Well, I am reasonably sure it didn't turn out to be a red wedding. Didn't see her on any of the mailed lists of recently deceased. I haven't got any "I Can't Believe It's Not Goat's Blood" left but I could dilute some tomato ketchup and add some beetroot juice. It should suffice.

How fitting that this came just after I had got around to start the One True Wiki page on haiku, including a mention of Angelastic's Haiku Detector.
