Perhaps it's somewhere in my PMs—they all have wonderfully non-descriptive subjects. That would explain why I can't find it on the attachments or the image folder.
(I do have a copy of it myself, I was just wondering if it had been posted.)

I strongly disagree with that. Follow the bits that make you happy. When that coincides with the bits that earn you money then that is awesomefull.

Hmmm. I guess that rules out Unattainable by Chronos-Dragon. But SweetLhuna's original (which you linked to) is indeed 1024×791 (or 1017×786 if you do not click-to-enlarge).
  I also looked at the Hats page on the wiki, but it didn't give me any ideas.

Are you suggesting that the HiddenAuthor doesn't read GLR?

Aluisio, If you only got it via PM and it's not posted to the OTT you didn't redundantly save it it may be lost.
ChronosDragon uploaded everything to a dropbox which is disabled now.

Result on the OTT: I've formed a habit to click on a post subject before hitting refresh, so that the post in question would remain visible. Unfortunately, xe needs to reload. The point of reloading is to see any new posts. (If xe was Blitzing, xe wouldn't need to reload at all because the as-yet-unblitzed posts aren't likely to have been retro-edited.)
  There is a much bigger problem, which no browser can possibly hope to fix, which has to do with off-site images that are slow to load. For example, if I try to view OTT:1300:30 on ЯОЯЯІМ ТТО ƎНТ, the loading of all the images including the smileys on the top of the page causes the page content to jump down, erratically, over and over again, in unpredictable increments of dozens to hundreds of pixels at a time, for a few minips. (I tried it just now in Firefox 35, and it also scrolls up every now and then).
  If I actually want to read something, I must stop the madness with the browser's "stop loading" command (Escape key in Firefox). I think you're familiar with this behaviour, since you've been using ЯОЯЯІМ ƎНТ to blitz. The website is not to blame, it's a browser problem.
  The only sure-fire way I've found to reload and preserve one's scoll position is as follows:

  • Look at the top of the post you're at right now, find the date/time, and copy it. (In this example, the date/time is "Mon Jul 29, 2013 10:48 pm UTC")
  • Reload the page.
  • Wait for the browser to do whatever stupid thing it does. Or don't waitH and abort the loading.
  • Using the "Find in Page" command (e.g. Edit > Find in Firefox, or Edit > Find > Find… in Chrome), search for the time/date.
  • ???
  • Profit!

NoMouse wrote:Wow! Now I want that video as my desktop wallpaper…

That would actually be practical, if the frames were being played at true speed (which is one frame "every twelve seconds" according to the title card).
  Also, VLC can play full-screen, and if you switch to your browser whilst the video is playing, it is effectively the same as a desktop wallpaper. Just start playing in VLC, set the playback speed to 0.02x or as slow as it will let you go, and enjoy :D

 mrob27 Image

(ETA: I downloaded a 1280×720 version of the Solar Dynamics Lab video and have been playing it in VLC full-screen in the background at 0.02x speed for about 0.1 newpix, and it's only using about 10% of one CPU core, which seems fairly efficient.)

HHeresy!

Could that be fixed by the ЯОЯЯІМ pre-computing the image dimensions as they are downloaded and then patching the <img> tags to include width and height attributes?
Maybe an userscript that listens to the load event would work too.

Maybe it's worth doing when I'll make the next iteration.
Also, good timing since I'm thinking of what to do in a next iteration these days.

That would be cool! A userscript could probably fix it for the OTT itself (and many other pages besides) by tracking image dimensions by URL, such that when you reload a page all images that were already seen have known dimensions and the <img> tags can be patched.

I agree, these are both excellent ideas (though a bit of work, of course). My spoiler-opener script has to deal with this issue, because opening the spoilers ch*rps up the browser's efforts to auto-scroll. It also needs to detect when the user has done some scrolling of their own, and stop auto-scrolling when that happens. Here's the code.
  Note my comment about load events being useless when images "take a ch*rping long time to load" :D
  The numbers to adjust are "setTimeout(mon, 100);" (the number of milliseconds between times that it checks and adjusts the scrolling), "mont = 1000" (the number of times it does this, unless the user scrolls), and "ttd = 10" (the number of times it will check regardless of whether the user scrolls during that time). With my values, it will check for up to 100 seconds, with forced auto-scrolling during only the first secondw.

Code: Select all

// (lots more code was here, look at github.com/mrob27/timescripts to see
// the whole thing)

var get_tloc = function() {
  var h1 = location.href.split("#")[1];
  if (typeof h1 === 'string') {
    if (h1 !== '') {
      var target = document.getElementById(h1);
      if (target) {
        return target.offsetTop;
      }
    }
  }
  return 0;
};

var old_tloc = get_tloc();
var old_dst = document.body.scrollTop;

// Because myx.clientHeight is sometimes not updated properly (e.g.
// Chrome v29 when myx contains newly-loaded images) the global 'ttd'
// will be set if we need to wait a while and re-run this function.
var mont = 1000;

// Make it run itself a few more times, because 'load', 'onload', and
// 'DOMContentLoaded' events all fail to wait long enough for the
// myx.clientHeight property to be correct if myx contains newly-loaded
// images, and because images sometimes take a ch*rping long time to load.
var ttd = 10;

var old_msg = '';
var msg = function(s)
{
  if (s !== old_msg) {
    console.info(s);
    old_msg = s;
  };
};

var mon = function() {
  var t2 = get_tloc();
  var d2 = document.body.scrollTop;
  msg('dst = ' + d2 + ', tgtloc = ' + t2);

  if (mont > 0) {
    /* Because of opening all the spoilers, we're usually not on the message
     * that we want to be on. If there is a hash ("fragment") in the URL,
     * we'll try to locate it and scroll to it. */
    if ((d2 == old_dst) && (d2 != t2)) {
      document.body.scrollTop = t2;
      msg('set dst to ' + t2);
      d2 = t2;
      old_dst = t2;
    }
    if ((ttd <=0) && (d2 != old_dst)) {
      msg('dst = ' + d2 + ', old = ' + old_dst + ': stopping.');
      mont = 0;
    };

    ttd--;
    mont--;
    setTimeout(mon, 100);
  };

  old_tloc = t2;
  old_dst = d2;
};

setTimeout(mon, 100);

@taixzo's idea is treeish, too. Perhaps my code would be a useful starting point. Go to my Time scripts page or the Github repository if you want to see the entire script.

There's even a "Set as Wallpaper" option in VLC although it overlays all the desktop icons. I remember there was similar feature in KMPlayer that allowed you to actually set the video as a wallpaper with icons shown over the video. It seems this only worked on Windows XP though as the function does nothing on W8.1 now.

You could also convert the video into a sequence of images, put them into a folder and then set Windows to change them in order - the shortest time you can set for one image is actually 10 seconds (wow :shock: ), so that's close enough. Of course, there's the minor problem that you would need about 54,000 images to cover the whole video and GLR knows how Windows would handle that. :D

That would actually be practical, if the frames were being played at true speed (which is one frame "every twelve seconds" according to the title card).
  Also, VLC can play full-screen, and if you switch to your browser whilst the video is playing, it is effectively the same as a desktop wallpaper. Do just start playing in VLC, set the playback speed to 0.02x or as slow as it will let you go, and enjoy :D

54,000 - are you sure about that? That would take nearly a week to play!

That sounds about right. The video is about 30 minutes (1 shortpix), and the frame rate is probably 30 frames per second. If we slow it to 1 frame per 10 seconds, we're making the video 300 times longer, which is 150 longpix, which is about a wip.

Oh, I misinterpreted the original gif as being a 10 second gif that represented a half hour of real time - now I understand that the full video itself is 30 minutes long.

BLESS YOU, BLITZGIRL. BLITZGIRL.

Postby mrob27 » Thu Nov 05, 2015 10:03 pm UTC

Hmmm, automeme needs a new feature, or something.
  The template that generated the meme in the subject of this post was:

Code: Select all

 regex remove-leading-consonants: /^.*?({AEIOU})/$1/
 BLESS YOU, [noun-plural, noun-mass, character, adjec-noun]. BL[$0/remove-leading-consonants/].

It took "BLITZGIRL" and removed the leading consonants, then added "BL" and got "BLITZGIRL". But the meme only makes sense if the result is different, i.e. it has to start with something that doesn't begin with "BL". As it stands, there is no particularly convenient way to do this. I'll have to think about this…

taixzo wrote:Oh, I misinterpreted the original gif as being a 10 second gif that represented a half hour of real time - now I understand that the full video itself is 30 minutes long.

Those are not contradictory beliefs:
  1/2 hour of real time is 1800 seconds. The spaceship takes a picture (frame) every 12 seconds, so we get 150 frames. If one were to make a 10-second GIF out of that, the GIF's frame rate would be 15 frames/second. I can't tell what the frame rate of the previews is just by looking at them, but 15 frames/sec is in the ballpark.
  At any rate, the previews on the originally-linked page imgur.com/a/F8uNU are not GIFs, they are HTML5 <video>s with dual sources (MP4 and WEBM). For example, the first MP4 is i.imgur.com/ss4h58m.mp4, which you can view directly in your browser or even download with curl or wget. It is 813k. Using VLC's inspector we can see it is 29.97 frames/sec and 5 seconds long, or about 150 frames, which is 1800 seconds of real time or 1/2 hour.
  So yes, the "GIF"s represent about 1/2 hour of real time, and the full video is about 1/2 hour long and represents about a week of real time.

(Edit: Correct my math, to use 12 seconds per frame rather than 10, then edit a couple more times because I pasted in the wrong text :roll:)

Then I guess the meme works as-is :) Admittedly, it's rare that it picks one of the few members of the set [noun-plural, noun-mass, character, adjec-noun] that start with BL (there are only two, the other being BLACK BUN).

Additional comment about the solar activity videos:
  The real problem as I see it is nothing about frame rates as such, it's the fact that videos or films about solar activity have always been presented at a ridiculously accelerated rate. This example involves frames accelerated to 299.7× actual speed, which is typical. I've seen video like this since the 1970's. People think solar flares and prominences really move that fast, and they can't, it's just not physically possible. Sometimes solar flares are depicted as if they were moving faster than the speed of light! The top speed of a coronal mass ejection is about 3200 km/sec, or about 1/100 of the speed of light.
  Also, somehow I forgot that the spacecraft is taking one photo every 12 seconds, and did all my calculations based on one frame per 10 seconds… but the results are close enough and the conclusions the same.

Are the ONGs delayed again? When will the next one arrive? This is very disconcerting. I may lose all sense of time and end up catatonic, never knowing when to expect changes or just live in constant fear of unexpected change.

No I will learn to embrace the fluid newpix and realize the zen nature of always expecting anything, but transcending the wait ...

No I can't do that either. Too heretical. Commences intensified waiting ...

MAXIMUM BLITZROCKETS YIELDS MAXIMUM OLDPICES

Not a few q, only a few tenths of a q. This image shows the alignment before the shift:
Image

It was suggested (by @mikrit, OTT:2392:2) that the average of the heights of the two Beanies should be 1q, and the vertical bars numbered 9, 10, 11, 12 are that height. When they reached the bottom the left Beanie reached out (frame t-1_0230) and moved it no more than half xer own height (frame t-1_0244)

When @mscha first pointed out (at OTT:2401:3) that the Beanievator was ascending without having shifted back to the right, I and others called shenanigansmustard. I also suggested (OTT:2392:9) that we're seeing movement in the 3rd dimension, like in Time frames 1359, 1360, etc.

(ETA: While @mscha is here, I suggested that xe could improve newpixbot's ninja-avoidance algorithm. A post that does not contain any <image> cannot possibly ninja newpixbot. (One would also want to whitelist images whose URL contains "/images/smilies/") )

Okay, okay, I was a bit off. What's an order of magnitude between otters? :P
My point still stands, though: elevator moved to the left at the bottom, but is still at the same point at the top.

I can see, sort of, how “3D” might explain the discrepancies while going down; but for the upwards discrepancy I don't see how that would work. We saw the cabin move to the left when Short Beanie pulled on the rope, without any apparent camera change. We now see the top of the elevator ‘shaft’, and it appears to be the same camera position as before.

I do neither... But: Large buildings tend to create some rather fierce up- or downdraft. Now, if the gondola is moved just slightly into a region of altered laminar flow nearer to the wall, it might get sucked in further and hold the position there until it has risen enough to swing back. This would not explain some qs but might some deciqs.
