I remember castling quite a lot when I was in a chess club. A rather useful maneuver.

For decree, it's the side with all the black and white squares, not the one that's a nice plain oak finish.

Chess, freed from the oppression of grid play, pieces free to attack at will across a vast expanse of oak? That's madness! That's like putting color on the traditional black and white newpix!

Oh dear, we've done that, haven't we...

Up doesn't change whether you're playing chess or not. It's always the direction directly away from the local major gravitational pull.
As for the bonus: that's easy. The Zanclean flood gained its speed and force due to gravity.

HES, I see what you did there (and there). Image

For decree: I don't know what's up with it. Like the <computery stuff> in the OTT, discussion of chess often leaves me confused, wishing I understood more about it. Sort of an indirect relation--it's RELATED to the OTT, which is of course directly RELATED to the OTC.

Those pictures were pretty funny. I'm always trying to think of new things to do for the pictures on the Giant Dipper here. I liked the one where everyone was brushing their teeth. What else could you do? Knitting, playing pattycake, sleeping? Sleeping would be easy to do. Hm, juggling. There's probably a way to do that. You'd have to stick the balls together somehow.

I need new contact lenses. I have a hard time reading things on my MTA screen, leading to this particular m*stard:

I was enjoying the Storm.
I was indulging in the pleasure of being warm and cozy and listening;

While on the other side of a thin piece of glass wind blew and rain poured in sheets.
The rain blew against the glass, it overflowed gutters and splashed onto walkways.

Lightning flashed, the thunder rattled dishes and windows.
I dozed off while listening to the Voice of the Storm.

It was all so very Peaceful.
(deep breath .. (sigh..))

...Maybe, the Storm was insulted,
because I was unimpressed.

The Storm got my attention.
It frightened me. AHH!

I woke up when I was plunged in the Stone Age.
No electricity! No power at my fingertips!

Yes. The roof and the windows held against the Storm.
I still had running water with functional indoor plumbing.

So; What's to complain?
No Internet! No You!

No Heat.
It was cold.

The men and women that do Real Work restored power to us Forest Dwellers.

Now; I can dose off listening to the rain, again.
Staying awake will not keep the electricity on.

We lost power yesterday, for a minute or two.
There was no Storm.

You don't want a 3D printer. I once made a couple of sets of 2.5d chess pieces with acrylic sheet and a laser cutter - 2D shaped pieces, with an interlocking base piece in the third dimension. However, the base is half the height of the piece, so it's only worth half a dimension.

Can't find any pictures though. They're in the basement somewhere.

It's blitzreport time, again?

Blitzreport 25; pages 926 ÷ 948

Nano-machines assembling into molpies as necessary?

Inside of GLR's time comic AI/script, there is another script for a sort of universal constructor (UC) which is how the comic generates new creatures, concepts etc. Maybe this is another bug in the script, or maybe a significant evolution point? The AI is trying to break out of it's prime function of telling the time-story... Is the AI is trying to communicate with us directly? Is it trying something new, after we ignored it's prior mustard-based calls?
Universal Constructor appears much later in Fractories!

Steakish report, balthablitz! I'm glad you were able to save #24. I've done a mustard mix-up with the editing/quoting features before, too.

I might have to reread the newpages during the Long Night some Time; I don't particularly think on that period of the thread fondly because there was so much astronomizing and quite a lot of Waiting for it, but now that I can skimblitz those posts I might like it more. Our blitzreporter certainly found some molpish moments.

lmjb1964 wrote:The TimeWorld discussion was pretty awesomeful. I need to revisit it.

I never posted all the stuff I wrote about Time World. Here's my version of @mscha's chess set:
I wrote:Chess set for sale whilst Waiting for Zanclean Escape: king/queen are Cueball and Megan; knights look like raptorcats; bishops are Bunny and Gray Bun; the other side has Amtoo/Beanette and Rosetta/Ms. Frizzle bishops.

Apparently I took it as established truth, not even deserving repetition, that the castles would be castles… and of course, molpawns.
Here's a large piece that I wrote about the Berm attraction:

The largest attraction of Time World is its Zanclean Flood Generator, a seaish version of the wave generators at water parks (e.g. Typhoon Lagoon) but with an extra lake to buffer the recirculating process. Most of it is never seen by guests.
The Berm itself is a concrete dam with a floodgate that moves like a segment of Oosterscheldekering or the Thames Barrier (suitably modified for faster operation and frequent use). To the west of it is a large "holding tank" which is effectively a reservoir, but mostly covered over. Time World does not attempt to recreate the Atlantic as an actual body of water. Sight lines, landscaping, etc. are set up so that you can't get close enough to tell — but the "holding tank" is covered with a flat roof made to look like the surface of a sea.
Just to the west of The Berm, and under this fake "sea" roof, a device like Maeslantkering holds back most of the water. This is a safety mechanism: In order for the Zanclean Flood to start, both the visible Oosterscheldekering-like Berm barrier and the hidden Maeslantkering-like barrier need to open simultaneously.
For most of a Shortpix, a small trickle of water comes out someplace near the top and hops down the rocks. The floodgate itself has a notched or valley-shaped top edge, to make a more-gradually-increasing flow, eventually opening all the way quickly for the big flood. The Berm is decorated/camouflaged as much as possible, to make it look like an earth/rock berm that is eroding, then crumbling and failing in progressively more troubling stages. Anything that looks mechanical is covered with fake fibreglass "rock terrain" that is lifted/slid/pulled out of the way when it's actually time for water to start bursting through that part of The Berm.
The terrain to the east of The Berm is made to look natural and fragile, with vegetation and "loose" rocks, etc. but it's all actually steel-reinforced concrete. Forced perspective (smaller-than-lifesize trees, etc. and no way for guests to get really close) makes the whole area look bigger than it is.
The big flood comes right at the Shortpix. It takes just under a minip for the reservoir to drain into the MeditemporeouSea3. We now have a tsunami-like swell rapidly travelling east towards the accessible beach areas of the park.
To absorb the swell, several hundred metres of the MeditemporeouSea3 contain numerous conduits of varying sizes with their open ends hidden underwater at various depths. These are placed across the whole width of the lake from shore to shore (north to south). The pipes connect the interior of the lake to a second and much larger hidden reservoir that functions essentially as a balancing lake. Ths surface area of this reservoir is several times that of the whole MeditemporeouSea3! Each conduit's action is completely passive; they are merely inverted siphons (with intake grilles so only small creatures get pulled through) with their outflow ends spaced far apart. Larger ones come first (i.e. positioned closest to The Berm) with their openings deep, to disperse the low-frequency/long-wavelength component of the wave. Nearest the navigable part of the lake, the conduits are more numerous and their openings closer to the surface. Many conduits feed The Forty Raft Ride, within whose artificial cliffs small tanks wait to be refilled with water used to heighten the sense of being pushed up a river by a flood surge.
This leaves quite a bit of the Flood still moving towards the beaches in the form of big waves. These are dampened with artificial reefs, so the waves break while still far from the beach, but water will still rise. If you're building sandcastles within a metre or two of normal Sea1 level, you can expect some or all of your creation to be lost.
All the flooding is done within 5 minips or so. During the rest of the shortpix, huge pumps are transferring the water from the balancing lake back into the "holding tank", preparing for the next cycle.

mrob27 Image

I don't think this would actually work as described: inertia of the water sitting inside the inverted siphons would make their reaction-time too slow. Perhaps trapped air would help reduce this problem. For safety the design must be entirely passive, or at least remain tolerably safe even if any machinery lost power.
