And time for another blitzpost from me on the occasion of reaching 70% (1740/2485)

And we have another story unfolding on an ongish way! Starting with a hillside with molpies scampering upwards, panning slowly up we see that we are at the point where the Forty landed after their voyage. Only they are not here yet, and nor is the sea!. But soon it comes with a great rush, and shortly afterwards the raftcastle arrives as well. Surely we're not going to get another *nd!
For a while it does seem that way, but with a great sigh of relief heard around the OTT the story moves on. More chirps, and the forty have set up camp in this new place. Cuegan goes exploring (of course) and they find out that they are on a small island. Hopefully the sea has stopped rising and it's not just a temporary halt while the Eastern Med fills!
Beanish eyes observe...

The holidips are here in the OTT. Much cataloguing of the everchangind XKCD shop banners. Less brainslugs, hopefully they are banished rather than just silently in control...
Many jigsaws, sucking much time away from me :)
Confusing puzzles from Aluisio, far too complex for my exceedingly riverish brain to contemplate. Maybe I should get one of those safety helmets.
And a new epilogue pattern for the new year! The question is, how are those patterns generated...

Onwards to 75%. Should pass the first yipiversary of the OTT in the next 5%. And possibly Madness v2. I wonder what oddnesses await...

Hmm, ED posted something while I was composing this, which I think makes me Pope. Oh chirp...

How about something Lucky-related...

ETA: Quickly blitzed another page, need 1741/2486 for 70% :). Is Silent Timer the GLR? Are we all the GLR? I'm pretty sure I'm not anyway!. Back to draining poor defenseless kittens... While carefully avoiding trying to drain Lucky. I think he might get miffed...

This is the point in my post where I fell down the hopmolpy hole entirely and spent multiple newpix looking at miscellaneous xkcd pages and such.
The most RELATED piece comes from the page http://xkcd.com/election/ which has a possibly heretical saying at the top...

Perhaps: it's

The rest of the pages I looked through are basically unRELATED but are in the spoilers for the curious.[spoiler]

And then I did a thing where I tried to find as many Othercomics as possible from outside xkcd.
I know I didn't get them all (some links were just too old and broken, reminiscent of the current Othercomic), but I did find a bunch.

Nah. For all we know, GLR is either a silent lurker, watching with fascination as his creation continues to be discussed for years after its release (and continues to spawn creative material of its own), or he could be an interactive poster with no overt suggestions that he's GLR. "I'm just one of the xuys..." (Covert ops?)

Third option: we are all GLR.

:D Okay, I've decided these are a Thing, at least for automome purposes. Except I'm going to call him BlitzRandall to elevate possible confusion with Blitzrandir, because it's more fun that way.

Oh, by the way, the OMD now has sections (eight of them); there are page-to-page links at the top of all pages but the first, and there is a quick index at the end of each page. The first page also has a link to the quick index at its own end. This is all to help address this suggestion by @taixzo.

Lenticular hair, now that would be fun.

Thanks for OTTifying Yin-Yang into frame 2485. I'd like that to be the official frame 2485 from now on (though that might be slightly heretical…)

Hey wow, more smilieses! That'll be fun to work on… since I prefer the faster-loading nature of the repository on NP 2300, I'll try to add these new ones there. I may have to move more of them off of the main list into the satellite repository (that presently just has all the mrobs).

When initially planning the split of the dictiOTTary into pages, I looked at what would happen if I did a sort of binary division into 8 parts on the then-current list of newwords. The page breaks did not all fall near the beginnings of letters, and in particular the very middle split landed very close to molpy. Here's what I wrote:

Code: Select all

Based on alpha-newwords.html, the following is a fairly close binary
 subdivision:
            .                                 .
            |   .   :   .    |    .   :   .   |
            0   C   F   J  molpy  P   S   U   Я

The above became the original version of the "quick index" thing that now appears at the bottom of each section.
Recently when I actually split it up into pages, I did a similar thing but tried to split evenly the actual text as it had gotten by that point. This is where I actually put the page-breaks:

Code: Select all

            .                                .
            |   .   :   .   |   .   :   .    |
            0   C   F   K   N   P   S  Time  %

We're kind of stuck with these page-breaks because I don't want to break links yet again. Of course I left the molpy label in place so it could remain in the quick index.

I am going on a journey (bringing bags, but no st*amb*ttles), to the land of Morobu. bOTTeriada is still taking a long time for me to write, but I'll try to work on it during the trip. Perhaps Morobu will help. (I might post in plain text (or maybe even RHTF (but not tinytext… (oops.))))

The making of t-1: PROLOGUE

Postby taixzo » Tue May 24, 2016 4:51 pm UTC

BEGINNING THOUGHT TRANSMISSION FROM 2003

Huh, I keep my mouth in the same shape for an 'm' sound as I do for a 'b' and a 'p'. I wonder whether there are any other sounds like that?

*goes through alphabet*

Ok, there are 3 sets: m, b, p; n, d, t; and ng, g, k. Words seem to put letters in a set together a lot, although it's not always obvious - for instance, in the work "ink", the n is making a "ng" sound. It's rather obnoxious that letters in English aren't always consistent.

What if there was a way of writing that made it obvious how a word sounded?

*sketching out letters*

Ok, I've got a first attempt.

Image

*a few days later*

I've been using this to take notes during class, and have discovered some problems with it. There are too many strokes per character, especially in the "ng g k" series; when written in multiline text, it isn't clear whether a dot goes with the line above or below it; and "f" and "r" look too much alike.

*redesigns some things*

Image

Cool! I now have a writing system that is based on sounds instead of letters. And...I don't really have anything to do with it.

*puts paper in filing cabinet, forgets about it for 12 years*

To be fair, that's how most sources recommend designing orthographies.

And evidently, /h/, /θ/ and /ð/ got lost somewhen.

EDIT: It's also interesting that /ʒ/ got an overline, not a dot. And /w/ and /j/ seem to be handled as vowels--which is what confused me a bit about your orthography.

/h/ was eliminated consciously, as it is not a strongly-pronounced letter. /θ/ and /ð/ were lost, because I lost the slip of paper they were on, and I didn't re-invent them because I didn't need them yet! Thinking back, I'm pretty sure they were ∩ and ∩̅ respectively. (The overlines and dots got switched at some point, which is probably why they're inconsistent.)

That makes sense. Maybe the world was repopulated by Cockneys or something. Given how RP seems to be trending in that direction...

Baobabs! That future arrived a lot quicker than I had anticipated. Which makes it pretty cool indeed. 8-)

Boring ramblings about words in my ottercomic hidden in
Spoiler:
Truth be told, I hadn't even thought of checking the OTT itself for previous occurrences of "molpixel(s)" using the forum's own search facility. I did check the OMD before writing my "title text", though, so for the historical record, the OMD entry for "molpixel" had not yet existed at the time I posted my ottercomic. Unaware of the previous occurrences of the term "molpixel(s)" in the OTT, I independently came up with what to me appeared as a newword; admittedly I used it with a slightly different meaning than what ordinary common sense (insofar as OTTers could be credited with one) might expect it to be, but my choice of wording was to a certain extent constrained by the limits of available space.

Baobabs again! The roots of t-1 reach back farther than Time itself! Which makes its naming even more appropriate.

While I, too, have occasionally dabbled in inventing scripts as a youngster (like probably others here as well), I never got as far as actually practising them. Taixzo's report, though, reminded me that I did, on occasion, practise my self-taught ability of writing old German cursive while taking notes in school.

But anyway, I'm already impressed and look forward to reading more about the backstory of t-1!
