1190: "Time": Lake Isle of Everfree

Postby thunk » Mon Aug 15, 2016 1:22 am UTC

Meuh. On vacation. And distracted.

The annoying thing with my interests is that they tend to move on quickly. I spent two wips reading nothing but the Time thread. But four mips later, I think I've completely lost it. Blitzing is a slog, not a source of enjoyment. Even though I have only about 450 pages to go.

Do I Wait For Epiphany or something?

Pope decree: add information on t-1 to the OTW. Especially proto-beanish.

I'll have another Torgos update soon.

PS: How do the navigation links work? Those seem like an excellent idea, and I'll retroedit them into the previous Chronicles as well once I know.

Once you have the post links copied as SBN covered, you can use URL tags to create the navigation links. For example, the following code will create a link that looks like this:

Code: Select all

[url=http://forums.xkcd.com/index.php]that looks like this[/url]

Just replace the text after "url=" with the link you wish to place, and replace the text in between the url tags with whatever you want the link text to be (such as "previous chapter" and "next chapter") and you'll be on your way.

Poor thunk, stuck in the Past. Just remember, there are many ways to Time, none better than any other. You can read or skip whatever you wish, and nobody will think any less of you. If you want to continue the Blitz, that's molpish! If you want to skip to the Present, that's molpish too! If you want to do both, a schizoBlitz is another option. Or, you could just pick and choose bits and pieces to read until you've had your fill.

Ok, I'll try to say it differently.
I wanted to try a trick.
A microprocessor's output pin can be connected to a speaker or buzzer. It can then be used to play melodies made of square waves.
This has been done many many times.
This way you can't play more than one sound at once.
But what if I wanted two?
How to play two squarewaves on a single digital line?
At a point of time the squarewaves can be in the 0 or 1 state.
When both are 0, my signal should also be 0.
When both are 1, my signal should also be 1.
When one is 1 and one is 0, my signal should be 0.5.
There is no 0.5 digital state.
How do I make one?
The answer is PWM.
I can generate 0s and 1s so quickly (1.5MHz) that the speaker will not be able to keep up with it. And it will behave as if the average was present.
And this works:
Spoiler:
pwmsound.png
pwmsound.png (4.22 KiB) Viewed 11215 times
pwmsound2.png
pwmsound2.png (4.2 KiB) Viewed 11215 times
(The second one is filtered)

I wanted to do this and see how it works.
I don't have microprocessors lying all around my desk.
But I had two free SilentTimer Action Figure clocks. Which have an MSP430F1232 processor and buzzer connected to it.
I also had one eMeSPek board. Whic has exactly the same processor.
I decided to do this on the STAF.
Of course, I don't write the whole program at once. I would write some of it, load it on the processor, see how it works and contiue.
But after i loaded my first version of the new program I was not able to do it again. mspdebug (the software I used for this) failed to connect to the processor and reprogram it. I was afraid that I accidentally made a change that made the processor go into a state in which it can't be reprogrammed.
And that the STAF has become useless.
After some time I found out what the problem was.
Mspdebug's support for the parallel port programming device is not very good.
(For some reason it had no problems with reproggramming after the normal STAF software)
But I found a way around it. I had to:
- connect the cable to the eMeSPek board (which was programmed to only change an output state in an infinite loop)
- start mspdebug which connects to the processor correctly then
- disconnect the cable and connect it to the STAF
- enter the reprogramming command (twice, worked only after a retry)
This way I was able to continue. I chose a music I liked and made the device play it.
And everything worked.
The program can be found here: http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/staf/pwm.zip
The zip file also contains a .wav file generator and a perl transposition script

Good luck, my blitzing friends!

That would take a more than Zanclean event, given that Duisburg is about 100 miles away from the closest sea and lies at an elevation of about 110 feet above sea level. (Such an event would also be extremely mustardful to people like mscha, Neil and everymolpy else in their general vicinity.)

Technically, of course, it would maybe be possible to wash those sandcastles into the nearest river, which would eventually carry some of the sand to the sea, given enough Time (say, like, 11,000 yips). I don't think that's what will happen, though.

I was reading an article about redheads (who usually should be called "orangeheads"), and I figured out some thoughts related to Time (OTC). I made the following wiki page: Colors.

Basically we can know that Megan and Cueball's people have words for black, white, red, green, blue, and brown. Black and white are givens as all cultures start with those. The rest are mentioned in the OTC, except for blue, but it should be likely that blue is there too!

This also tracks, maybe, how advanced their culture is. We always say they're less advanced than the Beanies. Probably still true. If they don't have a word for orange... ;)

Reading this for the first "time" on NP1281 from the perspective of the 19th of August 2016. I so wish this had come to pass as our actual choices for this United States' election cycle leave so much to be desired. Has anybody in the present present started a write-in campaign?

Hopefully no flaming over inflammable versus flammable either.

PS. As it will be a few more moons before I reach the current present present and experience whatever reactions this post might cause. I will watch my PM box for anybody who may request that I attempt to extinguish any undesired conflagration by removing this ignition source. But if the present present is as I read the current past that I am experiencing, it is my hope that it will be taken in the slightly gallows humorous way that I intended.

I think everyone is in agreement that this election cycle is chirped.

Even those few that don't agree that it's ch*rped would definitely agree that it's flammable, possibly even in multiple senses of the word...

Boi-castle get! It's running pretty raptorish, as befits a raptor confederate.

Well, maybe as in East Asia, green is blue.

And I don't think the number of color terms in a language represents cultural complexity--even though Russian has all of English's color words plus an additional one for "light blue", Putin has not taken over the world yet.

I hope this current lack of posts is just caused by some molpishness in the OutsideH for everymolpy. Is "Molpishness in the OutsideH a form of Holy Contradiction?

Coincidentally, a lack of postsS due to an extended BBQ the evening before prevented a Timely start of the first concert during VHF's "Molpishness in the OutsideH" tour, because the podium for the drummer could not be raised above the stage.

Some molpishness inside: My MTA autocompletes "Molpishness" :D

The Outside has a particularly strong pull on the weepends. :(

To celebrate the end of the weepend, have a new OtherComic!
