1190: Time: ЯОЯЯІМ ТТО IS THE NEW LIZARD

balthasar_s wrote:Yes, this is what I saw in the morning. Good to know that this was not just a dream.

Yes, I also have the same text that @GnomeAnne posted. It is (was) in a post by @The Advent that was posted at 20180223.0500 UTC = newpix 43226.01, with an empty subject line; it was never edited, and then it was deleted.
Ths size of the picture was different, I think. timeframe size?

Thank you.

I have the original image (attachment 56354), and it is identical to the new one (attachment 56364) that was re-posted by @The Advent.
  Only the tagline ("Time is surprising. You never know what will accidentally ripple into yesterday.") is new.

I note that the new post, made at 20180224.0500 UTC, was one dip after the first, subsequently-deleted post.
  It's almost as if today's post rippled through time into yesterday. ;) It is worthwhile to note that 0500 UTC is presently the same as midnight in the Randall/xkcd timezone. Midnight Randall time is when Time started (but it was Daylight Savings Time, so it was 0400 UTC). As @ucim noted, we're about a mip before the Timiversary and that mip is called Advent.
  The delete and re-post might have been planned; or the tagline may have been added as a retcon.

    I made a sand castle.
In rolled the sea.

said the sea.

I dug sand tunnels.
In flowed the sea.
                    "All sand tunnels

said the sea.

        I saw my sand pail floating free.
        I ran and snatched it from the sea.

1190: Time: E163: BLUENHANCISATION ERROR

Postby mrob27 » Sun Feb 25, 2018 2:30 pm UTC

Going on the suspicion that our newest contributor and xes images might share some cultural heritage with the other famous image-based creations we've seen, and therefore might have palimpsest properties, I checked for PNG palettes.
  The images from @The Advent are PNGs. They are 553×395 pixels, the Time-honoured size of a newpix. They have bit depth 8, color type 0 which means 8 bits per pixel grayscale.
  They also have a large iTXt chunk, which tells us that both PNGs were created with Photoshop at "2018-02-22T01:58:26-08:00", which means last Wednesday a bit before 6:00 PM in the U.S. Pacific time zone. Apart from that, I don't see much of interest.

I did some things related to video signals so naturally I would divida images into rows and rows into pixels.
So when I followed the link to see:
edo wrote:
Smithers wrote:Simple: 1 TimeFrame = 395 TimeLines and 1 TimeLine = 553 TimePoints.

I think you misunderstand, 1 n e w p i x is made up of 553 pixcolumns, each made up of 395 pixels.
I thought: "heresy!" :)

Apart from that, I don't see much of interest.
I would think that at least the actual content of the picture could be interesting... :wink:

It's a meme template now?
That was fast.

Actually, the error message becoming template reminds me of something funny from my FFS.
Unfortunately I shouldn't post it on a public forum.

1190: Time: SPOILER KALINIAM, NOT OTCOLOURISATION

Postby mrob27 » Sun Feb 25, 2018 8:10 pm UTC

It's a meme template, and I made a new regex transformation to turn words like TRANSFORMING into TRANSFORISATION. But it's not "finished" because I haven't worked out a good way to add an unnecessary ogonek to a randomly chosen vowel in the final word (which itself is random, including ERROR or MUSTARD or a few other possibilities).

1190: Time: E5: MUSTARDISATION RǪT13

Postby mrob27 » Sun Feb 25, 2018 8:33 pm UTC

Do such things need reasons here in the OTT? But yes, because it's an error, or mustard, to add an ogonek to an English (or Raftpeople) word so it makes the word "ERRǪR", MUSTĄRD, HANĮAM, etc. self-descriptive, which is meant to be a joke. Also, it references the original BŁĄD with its very large, hard-to-ignore ogonek. I like to think that the software was so angry over its error in synchronisation that it over-nasalised the A in BŁĄD.

This reminds me of something from school.
I was when I was somewhere between being 10 and 13 years old. I don't remember exactly.
On one of the lessons of Polish language there was something about how accenting different words could change the meaning of a sentence.
One of my friends was asked to say three times "obiecałeś oddać książkę" ("you promised to return the book"), each time with the accent on a different word.
Ok, so he does it:
First: "OBIECAŁEŚ oddać książkę" ("YOU PROMISED to return the book"). Ok.
Then: "obiecałeś ODDAĆ książkę" ("you promised TO RETURN the book"). Also ok.
And then for the third time he forgot to accent the word and remembered when he was at the last vowel and he overdid it:
"obiecałeś oddać książkĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘĘ"

Funny story, @balthasar_s. ĘĘ:ĘĘ:ĘĘ:ĘĘ!

Good points @GnomeAnne.
  The Sea1 was probably comparable to that of the saltiest lakes at present, some of which are more so than the Dead Sea.
  Water polo would be quite different, inasmuch as everyone would float much higher. Stuff like this would be far more practical, so it might well be easier to play a sport like hockey using floating shoe-boots with keels instead of skates.
  Synchronised swimmers could do more tricks.
  I hear that you shouldn't try to swim in the normal sense on a hypersaline lake. I'm not sure if this is because if the Pffthh factor, or something else. I also see statements that prolonged exposure to such high salinity is bad (it dehydrates the body), so athletes would need something special to train (impermeable skin-tight suits, I guess?) and perhaps also during actual competition.

Scaffolding
by Seamus Heaney

Masons, when they start upon a building,
Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won’t slip at busy points,
Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job’s done
Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be
Old bridges breaking between you and me

Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall
Confident that we have built our wall.

Spoiler:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friend (Part X)
by Blas Falconer
Your bags were packed
and left at the door, the vase you
filled with shells, wrapped in tissue,
your books boxed. I have the whelk
you found on shore, the small conch,
intact—the point, the fine grooves—
and keep it in a box with a picture of you
at the beach: your hair slicked back,
head cocked at an angle.
Behind you, the green jacket
you told me to throw away. Strewn
over a chair, its arms dangle
above the floor—a hole in the pocket,
the elbows thin from years of use.
5: Bye
Image
Spoiler:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Less, much less
by Moniza Alvi

He hardly spoke any words
only two —
or you could call it one

the last thing
he said
was bye-bye

flight-feathers
veined and hairlike
with interlocking barbules

of  sound
the bye-bye trapped
a breath of air

the two linked words
drifted out
on a calm lake

that lay there
with a single purpose —
to receive final words

and allow them
to drift on its surface
out and further out

on the lake of  thought
and composure
encircled by mountains

the simple phrase
soared upwards
to the highest peak

where it would be planted
like a flag
would eventually be enshrined

each identical word carefully
balanced either side
of the invisible join —

like baby talk
he put equal emphasis
on each word

his face was pinched
and his bird beak
very prominent

there have never been
two joined words
with so much space around them

pack up all my cares and woes
light the light
I’ll arrive late tonight

blackbird bye bye

bye

1190: Time: DIAL Z FOR ZOMBIE RAPTORS

Postby mrob27 » Wed Feb 28, 2018 5:17 am UTC

We now have two taglines, and each could possibly be a response to something that someone else had recently said:
  "Time is surprising. You never know what will accidentally ripple into yesterday." — could be a response to OTT:2635:27.
  "The photos are gathered from other lives, other stories, and changed just a little to fit this one." — could be a response to OTT:2636:18.

I think it's particularly OTTsome that the poems speak not only to the main theme, but also reference other things within Time. For example, this latest poem is primarily "about" Megan saying "bye." to the sandcastle in frame m0881, but there are also references to birds (m1276, m1844) and a body of water "surrounded by mountains" (m2902).

I just want to say how much I'm enjoying these epic reimaginings of Time. I can't say that 'bye' didn't give me a little twinge, but I have faith and will follow the First and Greatest Commandment. After all, Advent is a season of waiting for it.

I have also thoroughly enjoyed the BSTA. I hesitate to put this in the past tense; perhaps T** **D is actually "More is coming!" in some foreign tongue. But I've added ice cream to my shopping list. :)

Hi there!

Firstly, I must apologize; I really haven't been continuing on my blitz. Only earlier did I pick up from NP 745 (currently ~4 NP later). I shall try to get back into the thread, but unfortunately outside commitments have been building up. It doesn't help my wireless mouse is giving up, leaving me scroll-wheel-less occasionally.

Secondly, I have been silently reading these current posts; many I still do not know the context of, but I read 'em all anyway. The Advent's pictures & poems are truly perfectly executed, I love them.

And, finally, Snow :lol:! Couldn't help mentioning it; I've managed to miss most of the UK's previous rounds this winter, so I'm happy I've now got some proper. Even if it is blimmin' cold for us.

I'll go back to the past now, but carefully, keeping a foot in the door (time vortex?) here. *scout salutes*

And is that a steambottle (ugh) in the photo with the bags?

These photos and poems are so wingish, and mysterious. They just seem to arrive, and the only dialogue with the thread has been a couple of veiled comments that seem to be responses to things in the thread, but only obliquely. I'm very much enjoying them, and wondering how The Advent manages to keep finding photos and poems that are so perfectly Timeish.

And the counter is still counting down in bsta, so there must be more to come. Balthauthor wouldn't be so cruel as to just leave us to wonder what became of b and kxa, would he?

ETA for decree: It was easier for them to swim in the semencancercoffeebaconbabiesice than the fresh water, right? Maybe that means they could swim longer distances, so some sort of distance swim. I like the idea of water hockey using the "Jesus boots," as they call them in the video. And maybe a triathlon--swimming, RUNning, and rowing.

Postby mrob27 » Thu Mar 01, 2018 6:56 am UTC

At the last IceCoffeeStarsSemenLavaSandCancer Olympics, Saltroping was played as a Demonstration sport. Teams riding on rafts competed to lasso flotsam (and sometimes each other) with ropes. The rules and scoring are very complex and the sport has a small, but wildly devoted following. The IICSSLSCOC is believed to be close to a decision on making Saltroping an official event.

Strange, when I click "Search user's posts" I can't see any posts from the OTT even though there's clearly one just slightly above...

Edit: Nevermind, they are all on this and the previous newpage, so I really don't have to use the search function. :)

Edit2: Wow, those AdventONGs are truly beatisomeful!

Also, it seems like we are slowly approaching the 5th Timi... Timey... Timenniver... Timniversary... I give up, I can't recall the correct spelling but you know what I mean, right? I can believe it's been that long! I'll try to stick around and celebrate it with y'all!

     And So the Skin...
by Peter Cole

                    And so their pounded hearts
were worn—
                                                       like a badge
                              or talisman,
that canceled
                    almost all their blindness—

                    creation's linkage depending
                                                       on a drive itself
                                                  derived from a kind of kindness
                                   or desperation, the sense that one's
inadequate,
                                                       at any rate

          the space for time—

          water has it, flowing
          (even from a faucet...)
                                        and here the black swan glides across it—

                                   as the sunlight's suddenly on my back,
                              and now the skin along it's warmer,
Lord,
                                                  which lets me walk by the river...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two excerpts from
Book of Hours
by Kevin Young
The light here leaves you
lonely, fading
as does the dusk
that takes too long
to arrive. By morning
the mountain moving
a bit closer to the sun.
This valley belongs
to no one—
except birds who name
themselves by their songs
in the dawn.
What good
are wishes, if they aren't
used up
The lamp of your arms.
The brightest
blue beneath the clouds—
We guess
at what's next
unlike the mountain
who knows it
in the bones, a music
too high
to scale.
*        *        *
The sun's small fury
feeds me.
Wind dying down.
We delay, & dither
then are lifted
into it, brightness
all about—
O setting.
O the music
as we soar
is small, yet sating.
What you want—
Nobody, or nothing
fills our short journeying.
Above even the birds,
winging heavenward,
the world is hard
to leave behind
or land against—
must end.
I mean to make it.
Turning slow beneath
our feet,
finding sun, seen
from above,
this world looks
like us—mostly
salt, dark water.
