Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings (Part 5)
by Joy Harjo

5. ELIMINATE NEGATIVE ATTITUDES DURING CONFLICT:

A panther poised in the cypress tree about to jump is a panther poised in a cypress tree about to jump.

The panther is a poem of fire green eyes and a heart charged by four winds of four directions.

The panther hears everything in the dark: the unspoken tears of a few hundred human years, storms that will break what has broken his world, a bluebird swaying on a branch a few miles away.

He hears the death song of his approaching prey:

I will always love you, sunrise.
I belong to the black cat with fire green eyes.
There, in the cypress tree near the morning star.

Spoiler:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Various Portents
by Alice Oswald
Various stars. Various kings.
Various sunsets, signs, cursory insights.
Many minute attentions, many knowledgeable watchers,
Much cold, much overbearing darkness.
Various long midwinter Glooms.
Various Solitary and Terrible Stars.
Many Frosty Nights, many previously Unseen Sky-flowers.
Many people setting out (some of them kings) all clutching at stars.
More than one North Star, more than one South Star.
Several billion elliptical galaxies, bubble nebulae, binary systems,
Various dust lanes, various routes through varying thicknesses of Dark,
Many tunnels into deep space, minds going back and forth.
Many visions, many digitally enhanced heavens,
All kinds of glistenings being gathered into telescopes:
Fireworks, gasworks, white-streaked works of Dusk,
Works of wonder and/or water, snowflakes, stars of frost . . .
Various dazed astronomers dilating their eyes,
Various astronauts setting out into laughterless earthlessness,
Various 5,000-year-old moon maps,
Various blindmen feeling across the heavens in braille.
Various gods making beautiful works in bronze,
Brooches, crowns, triangles, cups and chains,
And all sorts of drystone stars put together without mortar.
Many Wisemen remarking the irregular weather.
Many exile energies, many low-voiced followers,
Watches of wisp of various glowing spindles,
Soothsayers, hunters in the High Country of the Zodiac,
Seafarers tossing, tied to a star . . .
Various people coming home (some of them kings). Various headlights.
Two or three children standing or sitting on the low wall.
Various winds, the Sea Wind, the sound-laden Winds of Evening
Blowing the stars towards them, bringing snow.
Wow, these Advent ONGs are cool. Excellent photography and poem selection.
The more time I spend alive the more careful I have to be rationing my time, being older and having more responsibilities and social circles and work and etc.
But every time I pop in here I'm reminded why I do, and I think I should make a habit of always having time for Time.
I made my avatar, Buffygirl hatted it, Yappo smileyed it and ggh taroted it!
I've changed, witnessing this thing so beautiful
Good luck on blitzing, katakissa, username5243, musthavebeenmykarma, iskinner, thunk, GnomeAnne, and quantized ! Keep the signposts coming, we love em in the now!
Dear
by Jill Osier
I did not walk down to the lake today.
Maybe I should have, though if you leave
a pail of rainwater sitting in the yard,
it gives an answer to most things. Emptied,
it's metal asking questions. Your face appears
undisturbed if you approach it carefully.
No one at the lake would have known me.
I don't think you can approach a lake carefully,
or I don't think we ever approach what we mean
to a lake.
Oh that's adorable! :D Now I'm trying to think of how we could make a simple two-frame stop motion animation out of that to make them dance... maybe build a whole row of them, alternating arms up and down, on a moveable board, and set the camera on just the middle of the row. Then move the board back and forth so that a molpy with its arms up ends up where a molpy with its arms down was in the previous frame... you'd have to make them all very similar though.
ucim wrote:Nice to see BlitzGirl again! I wonder whatever happened to her?
Yeah I remember I'd been away for a bit, then she disappeared for a bit, then I reappeared while she was away, then she reappeared but I disappeared again, then I reappeared again but she'd disappeared again... like we keep missing each other :P ...She's been busy with house moving type stuff as far as I'm aware, maybe she'll molpy up back here again once things have settled down.
Yeah that's not surprising at all, I found Animusic many many years ago, and then when I first saw the Marble Machine my first thought was "it's like Animusic in real life!"
Strangers
by Mark Turbyfill
God,
I shall tell you:
I am seeing and seeing strangers
Who are not strangers,
For there is something in their eyes,
And about their faces
That whispers to me
(But so low
That I can never quite hear)
Of the lost half of myself
Which I have been seeking since the beginning of earth.
And I could follow them to the end of the world,
Would they but lean nearer, nearer,
And tell me...
Of course the snow-molpies have clothes, but they're made of the same colour pixels, so you can't tell.
Exactly what I was thinking too… I really wanted to make all twelve (there are always twelve, of course, that's Canon) but the starssemenbaconcancericesnow kept sticking to my gloves, so after I made three I took three photos so here are the other two:
and if you flip-horizontal I guess there are eighteen versions to work with.
17: Language
Image
Spoiler:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What I Know
by Patrick Dubost
translated by Fiona Sampson

1. I know that language is within the world and that, at the same time, the world is within language.
I know we are at the border between language and the world.

2. I don’t like phrases such as “nothing new under the sun” or “it’s all been said already.”
I know that at every moment we could affirm: “everything is always new under the sun” or
“almost nothing has yet been said of what could be said.”

3. I know that there’s no true coherence except in apparent incoherence. Every object clothes itself in chaos.
To take shape, every thought must manage its own vagueness.

4. Among the obvious: I know that every human activity consists, one way or another, of battling death.

5. I know that time is bound up with space. Time is the shadow of space. Space the shadow of time.
I know that we live in the shadow of a shadow and that it returns to the light.

6. I know that I know nothing about love.

7. I know that I live not in the world, but in the shadow of the world.
I know that I go through the world the way an insect goes through its entire life in the shadow of a bank.

8. I know that nothing is simple. Or more, that what’s simple is never truly, never completely, so.
I know that everything adds up and that every element of this total depends on the whole.

9. I know that everything around me is nothing but a mass of contingency.
I know that every word props itself up on an immense architecture of contingency.

10. I know that thunder comes after lightning and sometimes, in my dreams, thunder precedes lightning.
I know that to see its opposite simultaneously with every phenomenon you must widen your eyes.

11. I know that whoever finds himself loses himself a little.

12. I know that I love a woman enormously, but I don’t know which one.

13. I know that to talk is to walk a path with emptiness to the right and emptiness to the left.
I know that nothing can grasp this path with two ends. I know that writing is talking in frozen time.

14. I know that the word “table” is like a thousand tables. That a phrase is like a thousand thousand phrases.
And that thinking is a match for water sports.

15. I know that every authentic poet is in decay.

16. To read isn’t necessarily to analyze, is not necessarily “to understand.” At the swimming pool,
we don’t ask the swimmer the composition of the water, the number and distribution of swimmers,
or why he’s picked this date to go swimming. We don’t ask him to describe, in mid-crawl,
the architecture or acoustics of the place, or to explain a bird trapped under its roof,
or to do a better imitation of the progress of some Olympic seal.
We don’t ask him to memorize opening hours or screw himself up by whistling from the bench
throughout an entire race in butterfly stroke. No. Finally, we don’t ask him, before each dive,
to bring up some secret meaning from the very bottom of the pool. No. We let swimmers swim.
We let swimmers swim. And the swimming pools fill up.

17. I know that I live and think inside a storehouse of books. Some recent, new, remarkable books,
but in the great majority books which are decayed, moldy, have turned to the lightest heaps of dust.
Only their metal frames and some fine particles of knowledge remain, unusable.
Light from a few windows crosses the storehouse unimpeded.

18. Having found some daguerreotypes on the floor of an attic—portraits eroded by time and light—
I know that forgetting is something enormous, that forgetting is our highest destiny.

19. I know that God doesn’t exist. That’s written everywhere in the storehouse—
it can be made out through the portholes, too. I know that after death there’s nothing but death.

20. I know that, seen from the border between language and the world, the universe is in increasing entropy.
But I no longer know what it is if I climb to the top of a tree (one of these trees on the border between language and the world),
from where you can see far into language and far into the world at the same time.

21. Because I have scaled a tree, I know that beyond language is a huge plain, with dark flowers and little mazy footpaths.

Spoiler:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Village
by James Doyle
The mountain breaks us into tiny stick
figures. It takes away the very air
we breathe. It shrouds our windows
and plays black dice with our children.
We live in a cage of nagging trees.
The food we eat only comes in scraps.
Fruit rinds harden beneath our feet.
The beds we sleep in are rusted leaves.
The sun is too hard for planting.
It cuts our fields and skin to tatters.
Our goats are like walking bones.
We survive on the edge of gristle.
When we make love, we say only
that the sky wears a faded eye patch
over its light. When we dream,
we smother in heat our leaking skins.
Our smallest building is the church.
It is large enough to hold our god.
If he lives here, he can give us
nothing we ever need but endings.
which, as I already noted, was probably a response to your own comment, "I wonder if advent took the pictures himself." It may be that the drawing-in-the-sand photo is more original than any of the ones that we had seen at the point when you made that comment.
A Dream of the Castle
by Kenyotta Bradley
A gull circles above the battlements.
The waves thrash and roar against the islet.
The stone is harsh, forgotten. The intent
Of the creator, for the glory of something.
Consumed by time, abandoned it lies;
The portals bespeak the faint war cry.
Perhaps he doesn't believe that cutting a foot off the bottom of a blanket and sewing it to the head makes it longer.
In any case, I'm enjoying them!
If it added a newpix of coma every six mips I'd be on board with it, or if the one in the spring was at 2 p.m. on Fridip instead of 2 a.m. on Sundip, but the way it is makes no sense.
I don't know How it did it.
Daylight Saving Time Worked this Year.
It was light into the night.
This day was delightfully longer than other days of late.
I like the poetry.
I hope we keep it.
Life is, just, an exchange of electrons; It is up to us to give it meaning.
We are all in The Gutter.
Some of us see The Gutter.
Some of us see The Stars.
Scene 60
[Extreme close-up: Exterior, day.] The camera is tightly focused on some mud, which is being carefully removed by fingers to reveal the underlying shape of part of a slab. The camera pulls back slowly, as more mud is removed and soon the entire slab is in shot. It is about half a cue wide, not quite as tall, and seems to bear an image in bas-relief, vaguely resembling a beach, but which is still too covered in mud to clearly make out.
Fifth Cleric wrote: I found another!
Wide shot, showing several people on the shore of the Sea of Holy Water frantically engaged in similar activity. The Fifth Cleric struggles to pull a similarly sized slab from the muck that has been exposed by the receding sea.
Close-up on the Fifth Cleric as he grimmaces and finally frees the slab, leaning it against a nearby bluff.
Fifth Cleric wrote: There better be a long pint at the end of all this, I tell ye!
The camera trucks in as Fifth Cleric starts to wipe the mud away, revealing the outline of several large oddly shaped trees with very long trunks and a small flat canopy.
Fifth Cleric wrote: Baobabs! What do ye bleedin' make o' this?
Spoiler:
Reverse angle, looking up as Fifth Cleric continues his work. First Cleric comes into view, silhouetted against the sky with his robes flowing in the breeze.
First Cleric wrote: How many?
Fifth Cleric wrote: Eight so far. Ye think he's watching?
First Cleric wrote: Watching?
Close-up on Fifth Cleric, who makes a sly upwards gesture with his eyes. First Cleric continues.
First Cleric wrote: Always he watches. The question is what he sees.
Fifth Cleric wrote: The question is what He's showing us.
medium shot on the group gathering around.
Third Scribe wrote:The question is what we see.
Sixth Herald wrote:The question is why? What does it mean?
First Cleric wrote:The question is why aren't you working? The sea may return soon, there's not much Time.
The group disperses and goes back to work unearthing these mysterious slabs. First Cleric reaches into his robes and removes the whirly geegaw from one of the folds. He contemplates it.
First Cleric wrote:Lunch will have to wait.
First Cleric looks around, puts the geegaw back into his pocket, and strides purposefully along the shore.
Extreme close-up: First Cleric's foot hitting something sticking out of the mud. The camera quickly tilts up at a cockeyed angle to catch First Cleric's face as he tumbles forward.
Close-up on First Cleric's face hitting the mud. He lifts his face up, and we can see the rest of First Cleric splatted in the muck of the shore.
First Cleric wrote:Ch*rping mustard!
First Cleric rises, covered in mud, and looks around.
The camera trucks back and pans around showing everyone quietly at work unearthing slabs. Nobody seems to have noticed.
Close-up: First Cleric examines the object of his downfall. An angular corner of a slab is sticking out of the mud where his toes had hit. First Cleric tugs at it to no avail; it is firmly stuck in the mud. He looks around again, and shouts to the rest of the crew.
First Cleric wrote:Over here! This one's stuck.
Reverse angle: Ninth Cleric appears behind First Cleric.
Ninth Cleric wrote:So, you're the one burying them, I see!
First Cleric wrote:Give me a hand with this, would you?
Ninth Cleric wrote:The Pope could lift that up with a stern look.
First Cleric wrote:Well, I'm going to at least need Holy Water.
Ninth Cleric wrote:It's buried in Holy Water.
First Cleric wrote:Yeah, that's why I need your help.
A crowd is gathering, as if for a schoolyard fight. The camera pulls back.
Ninth Cleric wrote:To dig up wallpaper?
Sixth Herald wrote:To find secret messages?
Third Scribe wrote:To replace scrolls with slabs?
Fifth Cleric wrote:This whole thing's a bleedin' joke! The Great Lord Randall just blinked at us from up above and is drainin' the sea. I say it's time for a Long Pint.
Close up on First Cleric, who looks around, commandingly.
First Cleric wrote:I find your lack of faith disturbing. It is not the Pope that does Great Things, for he can do nothing without our faith. And it is not us who do great things, for our faith is nothing if it is not in the One True Author. And though it may seem heresy to say so, the One True Author is manifest in his Holy Works, that is to say, us. The Pope, the scribes, the heralds, all of us. And that includes me, though not because of who I am, but because of who He made me be.
Faint music is heard in the background, growing in intensity during his speech.
continuing, First Cleric wrote:All of you are here, only because He made you be. These slabs are here for us to find, because He made them so. The sky above, and the Great Wonder of His Eye, are here because the One True Author decreed that it be that way. Perhaps, if we have faith and follow the Commandments, we may one day find Enlightenment, and come to know why it is that he made it be so.
First Cleric looks skywards for a moment. He then looks straight at Ninth Cleric.
continuing, First Cleric wrote:I asked for aid, and was mocked in return. This is what the One True Author decreed, and so you are forgiven. You shall all have your Long Pint, but only when you truly come to believe, for as the Long Pint starts out in the mind of the One True Author, it also ends there.
First Cleric walks up to the protruding slab. We now notice that his garments are now clean; during the speech they have gradually shed their mud. He reaches out with his arm, and makes a gesture to rise. The music swells as the slab rises out of the muck, and is washed in a spray of what could only be Holy Water appearing out of thin air. The slab clearly depicts a gate in bas relief against a grassy backdrop, and as it turns slowly in midair we can see ancient runes that are carved into the back.
Fifth Cleric wrote:Blimey! Will you look at that!
Sixth Herald wrote:What does it say?
Third Scribe wrote:I have no idea.
First Cleric lowers his arms slowly, and the slab, now glowing brightly, descends gently to earth. The others are stunned.
First Cleric wrote:You know what to do. I will tell The Pope myself; this can't be trusted to Shoe.
First Cleric turns and walks out of frame, leaving a wide shot in which we can see the other slabs that had been recovered are also glowing. In the mud there are also other spots that are glowing faintly. There is a great rushing sound, as if from the sea, and everyone turns to look, but the sea is as it was.
Sixth Herald wrote:I've heard that sound before.
Eighth Herald wrote:Yeah. It always makes me nervous.
Hi, ergman! We should all make a habit of having time for TIme. It's a molpish habit to have.
And Earthling on Mars! Glad you headed up the stairs. You could even open the basement door and come on in for a bit. :)
Loved the snow-molpies. It would be awesomeful to seem them animated, and maybe dancing to Metal Molpies.
Ouch.
You go on ahead.
I need one of these.
When I saw the picture with the drawing in the sand, it almost made me gasp. If that existed before Time, well, someone is psychic. Or TheAdvent is GLR, and drawing those images in the sand inspired him to create Time. :) EIther way, those images are just spectacular.
I am not a fan of the whole Daylight Saving Process.
Good luck getting through the FFS m*stard, HES!
I haven't read the new AotC yet; saving that for later. I think there was something else I was going to say, but I forgot.
Well, from where I am, xe seems to. Our changeover here in Europe is on the last Sunday of MarchH, so hasn't happened yet. The Advent's posts usually came at 06:00 am in my timezone (05:00 am UTC, corresponding to midnight Eastern Standard Time) until Sunday 12 MarchH. Since Monday 13 MarchH they have been arriving at 05:00 am in my timezone (04:00 am UTC, midnight Eastern Daylight Saving Time).
Sorry, I'd hoped to prepare something special for my unbasementing on a round number milestone. Maybe I'll manage in time for the binary RNM coming up soon.
