I am pretty sure they represent islands. Each period represents a set number of islands, we are now down to 3(.).1

Looks like we're sticking to this zoom level for a while; we're still zoomed-in much further than the “base zoom level” during their journey.
That's surprising, especially now that there are so many more people around. But then again, that might be the reason: having to draw fewer of 'em. Image

The rational course of action now is to A) determine the location, if possible, B) gather supplies, and C) be ready to get back on the boat if flooding resumes. Long-term they should probably head east along the shore to (on the assumption that they're still relatively near their river) find their way to familiar terrain

Yes, but... if they can avoid getting back on the boat, they probably should. But that might require heading uphill NOW. The spot they're standing on is certainly going to flood at some point. If they hang around until they see that start to happen, it might be too late to reach sufficiently high ground.

(Hey, I think the left half of the ground wiggled around in the last two frames. Maybe that's water? Could something be stirring it up?) (ETA: strikeout for new decree)

If not, how is the image fetched,

If you look at the source of the webpage, you will find

Code: Select all

...
 <div id="comic">
 <img src="http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/time.png" title="..." alt="Time" />
 <script type="text/javascript" src="/s/df5557.js"></script>
 </div>

So, you can download that script, and have a look at it yourself,
and maybe you can find out what it does exactly.

Have a reformatter/beautifier ready...

what stops you from 'setting the clock forward' on it?

If you don't know the filename of an existing picture, the webpage is asking the server for time.png,
and the server decides what file you get - i.e. the picture for the current time.
And the server is looking at its own clock, not yours.

Also, happy 2000th BlitzGirl! Image

From the NG map, it looks like that would happen when the water gets to 1500-1800 m below current sea level. The hills the Cueganites just left are at about 2300m below, and I don't think we've seen a rapid rise in water, so not yet on the spillover.

I just noticed the bucket was gone. That WAS the bucket, right?! On top of the sand planks on the right.

It wasn't there in M3041

Showed up in M3042

And was there through the land-bump, all through the night, around several Cueganites and when they scraped into wowpine land in M3084.

But disappeared in M3085. Think someone grabbed it when they de-gerafted?

My question is, how can Megan understand the Beanie maps?
Megan (geekwagon 3072) wrote:I figured out some of the maps.
If the sea is here, we're already cut off. There's nowhere left to run to.

I guess some of the maps were topographic (soon to become bathymetric), but there are several ways to display elevation on a map. How could Megan understand the Beanish way, if the map legend was written in Beanish?

(Well, possibly, both Cueganese and Beanish are written with the same pictographic symbols, so Megan can understand written Beanish. But nobody realized that until after Megan stole the maps. And the Beanish we have seen in speech is not the pictographs, but is Beanish written in the international phonetic alphabet that was invented in the year 12305.

And the unknown markings on the trees are in Squarish.

Fine, now I can suspend my disbelief again. But better explanations are welcome.)

So they are either on a piece of land that connects to the mainland or one that is already an island.

Solution: send your fastest runner to "do a lap" check it, and report back.

If the other side is uphill all the way up, you have a set of choices.
If an island (or soon to be one), you have a different set.

Either way, by looking you can cut the number of wrong choices. Time is not on your side, though.

At this level of zoom it's easier to distinguish them. With the drastic increase in cast size, that's somewhat necessary.

I always assumed xkcd was a very personal project, not a team (other than a web team, perhaps). Anybody know anything? Not speculation! Just the facts, mam'.

I'm fairly certain the entire creative process is his own, but he maybe runs his comics by a few friends/family before he decides to upload them, for proofreading and such.

It wasn't there in M3041

Showed up in M3042

And was there through the land-bump, all through the night, around several Cueganites and when they scraped into wowpine land in M3084.

But disappeared in M3085. Think someone grabbed it when they de-gerafted?

It is obviously Megan's bucket, it appears after she stands on the upper level and she is carrying it when she steps off the raft.

She's carrying the maps when she degerafts, not the bucket.

Aww, that looked like a bucket until the newpix. I still say it is her bucket (though not in her hands).

A what depth does the water begin to spill over into the Tyrrhenian Sea? And at what depth does it begin to fill the Ionian? I think we've established that at least the Ionian and western Mediterranean proper have the ability to accept a considerable amount of water, and so the water level will stop at the elevation of the spillways for quite some time. Are we there yet?
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full.
Unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

OK, may I also try my hand at an OTTification? As far as I could determine, this particular song I chose has - quite astonishingly - not been OTTified yet, a situation that begs to be remedied.

La Petite

Well, look about, look about, look about, look about, new sea!
Look about, look about, look about, look about, new sea!
Ooh! Ah! Ooh! Ah! New sea!

Spoiler:
Well, she's so fine, fine, fine, she's so fine, f-f-fine,
She's so fi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yine, she's so fine, fine, fine.
She's really neat, the brightest girl you ever gonna meet.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, - Oh, oh, oh, oh, -
La Petite, the brightest girl you ever gonna meet.

Well, have you ever seen a girl who wears a white beret,
Who'd save a sand castle and work for it all day?
She's so fine, she's so fine,
She's really neat, the brightest girl you ever gonna meet.

Well, she really takes a wooden deck and makes it float,
Saves all of us from drowning and doesn't need no boat!
She's alright, she's alright,
She's alright, wears her beret day and night.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, - Oh, oh, oh, oh, -
La Petite, the brightest girl you ever gonna meet.
Oh!

Well, she's my cousin, she's awe-inducing,
Instead of drowning, she's got us smoothly cruising!
She's alright, she's got what it takes,
She's got what it takes, and what an awefulsome raft she makes!

Well, she's our glimmer of hope, our river swimmer,
Without her, I'm sure, our future would be dimmer!
She's alright, she's got just what it takes.
She's got what it takes, and what an awefulsome raft she makes!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, - Oh, oh, oh, oh, -
La Petite, the brightest girl you ever gonna meet,
La Petite, the brightest girl you ever gonna meet,
La Petite, the brightest girl you ever gonna meet!

(Jackie Wilson, Reet Petite)

Agreed. While undoubtedly a tremendous amount of work goes into xkcd, it is his full time job (or at least that's what I've been led to believe) and if that's the case I don't think he would require a team.

Apart from someone to maintain the website perhaps, or even just keep an eye on things when he's off work.

When you leave your place of dwelling, do you now automatically look for your path of escape should the waters start rising? Are you more acutely aware of the location of the temporary islands you could be trapped on?

My island DID flood during Superstorm Sandy, and Manhattan was for some time divided into two new neighborhoods: NoPo (North of Power) and SoPo (South of Power). Luckily we don't live in any of the three evacuation zones. Living on the 53rd floor helps, of course, but you sure don't want to lose power in those elevators.

== Blindpost from NP 1238/1252 ==

So... that present-presence didn't last long. I've been frantically blitzing again all week. Anyways, this seemed to be worth responding to, since I was in an evacuation zone in Long Island, and am currently posting this from work in downtown Brooklyn. Whereabouts are you, fhorn? I lost power for about a week and a half, but was lucky enough to avoid any actual damage. There was standing water in the street only a few blocks from my house, though. Scary stuff.
