I kind of want the title text to change again in the next newpix, to "Ride it out."

Either that, or "Wait for it." again....

Maybe back to "wait for it"? In any case, it's looking like there's a good chance we'll get to see Randall's interpretation for all the various ideas on how this flood might play out on the water itself.

An average person requires a minimum of 2-4 liters of water per day. For 40 people, this means 80-160 liters per day. For five days, 400-800 liters, or 400-800 kilograms of water (roughly 900-1800 lbs). 14-28 cubic feet of water. The size is feasible (3 feet cubed) but the weight is substantial. Perhaps stick figures consume less water.

La Petite will say "How much longer will the sea rise? Do we have enough water/food/molpy chow?"

Now, is this on purpose and will it change again, or was it a mistake (and the GLR has spies in the OTT)? Probably the latter. (Ninja'd by a BlitzGirl/edo combination.)

My guess is a mistake, since the common ellipsis has only three periods. But if it changes again and the periods keep vanishing, that might be on purpose...

ucim wrote:re. haiku: My understanding is that it is supposed to be two contrasting ideas, expressed in seven (Japanese) symbols: 2, 3, 2, and there is supposed to be a reference to seasons, or a season of the year as part of the metaphor. The 5,7,5 syllable thing is an adaptation.

Actually, no, the 5/7/5 thing is the original. The difference is that in Japanese these are not 5, 7 and 5 syllables, but morae. It's a subtle difference: a mora is not an entire syllable, it's just one sound.
Nearly all Japanese syllables are made of only one mora, and each mora is a symbol in the "syllabary" (though it's more of a "morabary"), called kana. こ = ko, し = shi, etc. There's one exception, the kana ん, which is pronounced "n" or "m" and have to appear after another mora: こん is "kon", which is a syllable made of two morae.

So a haiku has 5/7/5 morae, with most morae being syllables in themselves, except for ん.
It's not related to the number of symbols. Kanji, the Chinese characters used in Japanese, often represent more than one mora. And you can use more than one kana to represent one mora because of compounds ("sho" is written しょ, "shi" + little "o") and "long vowels" (こう is "kou", that is a "ko" with the o pronunced slightly longer).

One example:
Spoiler:

のひじょうに有名な
俳句です

Written in kana only:
これはばしょう
のひじょうにゆうめいな

It means, I think, that there is no dry-shod route left to high ground; they're at (or near) a local maximum. So they have to stay in their raft. And pole faster, I guess, unless they can figure out a better means of propulsion. (If they get too far away from the rim of the Med, they're in trouble.)

Steve Ward replied to my email about the possibilities of a tsunami-like wave at the site of Cuegan's village. (Yes, I sent him a copy of the map.. :) )

> would the increase in depth be steady as a function of time or would there be inertial surges and "tsunami-ish" effects?

I'm not sure what 'tsunami-ish' effects are exactly, but to get tsunami waves you need standing water and
an excitation that is fairly quick - a few seconds to a few minutes.

In your map the Med Sea is nearly dry, so there's not much water to 'tsunami' in.

Too, the breach is 1000km from your
site which is on fairly flat ground. Although the inflow is 70,000 Niagara falls, it is far away and the Med basin is
pretty huge. The flow would look like a river at that distance.

Even as it fills, I don't see the influx making waves.
Does Niagara Falls make a continuous tsunami waves? No.

In my opinion the rise in water would be fairly steady like the video shows.

Now the rate at which the flood covers the sea bottom depends on its slope.
Inundation rates of the dry ground would be fastest over the flattest places early on.
You might have to pack up and hike many miles per day to stay dry.

And there it is. No tidal waves for Cuegan and the 40.

@adnapemit::voice - Neat representation of "somewhat"!

Sorry to whomever made the connection: I agree, Hairdo (Hairdid?) 's hair is similar to LaPetite...and (my connection) she's the mommy! Also, as is custom, Hairdid doesn't wear a hat inside. But outside, a beret!

When you learn English from books, you get a distorted view of word usage and few, if any, clues about pronunciation. Also, it's somewhat hard to understand native speakers when they speak fast (or on top of each other, like in the present frame), so there will/should be difficulties on that front.
Hehe, funny name.

*ahem* I didn't know a Spanish speaker would think English speakers spoke fast. I always thought Spanish was exceedingly fast (due to its uniform grammar and pronunciation). Thanks for the insight!

Here's a though. Cueball apparenly has mad rope-throwing skills. Can they lasso trees and rocks and things and kind of belay themselves close to the edge of the basin as the sea rises?

I'm thinking this is where La Petite will jump in with a suggestion to start rowing. Maybe.

So, Cuegan spend a day or two playing in the sand, then leave (unannounced?) their tribe for a couple of weeks, coming back to find the rest split into two groups. Each group has been industrious enough to build rafts. This would imply some type of organization and direction. However, when Cuegan appears, it seems like Cueball has assumed a position of leadership with the others asking him for direction and him not shirking from that task.

This is odd on two levels - 1) in his dealing with Megan, she took the alpha position. It was her insistance and prodding that got them to the Beanies. 2) LaPetite seems to have taken charge in building one raft and getting her group to relative safety. We don't know much about the second group but someone had enough initiative to gather materials and built a raft.

It doesn't look like there are any elders in the group. There are two women (I assume) with their hair tied in buns. This suggests to me (perhaps wrongly) that they are older but neither they, nor any of the men have stepped forward.

Except Cueball.

I don't know how or why, but he has become the de facto leader of the tribe. Unless Megan or La Petite gives him a dope slap (thwap!) and asserts her authority.

The rising of the seas are supposed to be a matter of days...
Remember the rule -- 3 minutes, 3 days, 3 weeks -- air, water, food.

The rain should be coming soon, which will probably really freak these people out....
Remember waiting a half hour for one darkening pixel? Pepperidge Farms remembers...
Note To Blitzers:It is advisable NOT to go past page 1130 until you've seen up to frame 2900 (Geekwagon Numbering). A lot is happening, and really, you do not want to skip ahead at that point.
