Still not ketched up, but I saw this post and wondered if the map speculators had seen it. I'm not exactly sure where Malta is, I'm afraid. I'd look it up but there are web-footed raptors sitting on my atlas.

ronaldkr wrote:
NoMouse wrote:So I guess she's drawing 'the big island'? Quick, mappers, where is it? Apparently it's none of the large Mediterranean islands and I can't find any island near Marseille of that shape.

Looks like Malta, a bit stretched in E-W direction. That makes the smaller island Gozo. Fits, as the Beanie expedition passed (and surveyed) Vesuvio and Etna before they got shipwrecked.

Btw, nice to see you, ronaldkr! And ED is back, yay! And Caswallon, wow! It has been a while! So treeish when people come up from the basement.

You could try a Time exposure.

More than two mips ago I started working on a very short film about blitzposting (And I'm making no progress at all because I'm too busy doing other things) and in it I actually connect the telephone to the red switch (so that I can use the rotary dial to control the bicycle lamp and ... )
GOOMHU :D
Somewhere upthread is a picture with you and the bicycle phone and some sort of contraption. If you set up a red switch with two positions, label them "magic" and "more magic", you can do anything. Of course, I can't spell, and end up with "mustard" and "more mustard".

Why shouldn't one eat cassettes? (I think I know, but am wondering why the warning is there.)

Yes, but how did you know that I actually connnected the phone to the switch and the connection actually did something? I see only one explanation: Magic. (or was it more magic?)

ucim wrote:Why shouldn't one eat cassettes?
Because it's one of the most heretical things one could imagine.h?
ucim wrote:(I think I know, but am wondering why the warning is there.)
Because I'm a honorary member of the "Nationwide Campaign Against Eating Cassettes"T They are big supporters of our base on the moon. And we use our fame of being the guys on the moon to promote a lifestyle that doesn't include eating cassettes (or throwing bicycles at people, see my first decree, also the picture in my sig doesn't count because she's thowing the bike at a robot). They even helped us produce our film "Don't fall asleep" (0:07) and we secretly placed their poster in the background (5:41).

It all started with this drawing, summer 2010 IIRC. As you can see, there are ads on some buildings. But they are to small to see what's written on them. I was especially interested what's on these with the face, so I drew an enhancement some days later. "Nie jedz kaset" means "Don't eat cassettes". I sometimes just get ideas for drawings like these, I can't explain it. It returned sometimes in some of my otherothercomics, otherotherotherthings. I also kind of drew something where there were computers running alternate universes which were stored on cassettes. So when eating cassettes you may be destroying worlds without even knowing!

Sorry for being away todip; I was experimenting with rewriting my XPA encoding script in OCaml (BTW, if someone could tell me why using 6300 samples per tone rags the sound compared to 6615 samples/tone, I'd appreciate). I'm still figuring out scoping and package management, but at least I got somewhere, unlike my couple attempts at Haskell.

Well, at least for us it's completely normal.

What is this "normal" of which you speak? Is it some kind of molpy?

"Force Normal" points down (into whatever you are pushing against)... as opposed to "force perpendicular", which goes at right angles to that. For example, if you push against a sled, you are applying a force against the back of the sled. This is the force that pushes it. If you are not lined up exactly right, your hand may slip, because there is also a force perpendicular (to the surface of the sled.

But the sled is pushing against the ground. The sled runners on the bottom of it are applying a force normal to the ground just by sitting there, and when the sled tries to move, there is a force perpendicular (due to friction) that tries to hold it back.

Gravity is the source of a lot of force normal, and gravity points down... into the depths of Hell and Heresy. Normal is to be eschewed, like the Outside, for it is itself like unto the Outside.

Ottish Physics should replace "force normal" with "Force Heretical", and also "force perpendicular" with "Force Molpish"... after all, when you're sledding, you want to go sideways, not down into the earth!

COULD GOATS *BE* ANY MORE NORMAL?

You're welcome, Jose! :) It was my way of thanking you for your latest installment of Acts of the Clerics...

第六章

(chapter 5)

ucim enters, and greets his guests warmly. They bow in response, and all are silent. ucim begins to speak:

The great ucim wrote: One morning, as the trees whispered softly in the breeze and the sun glinted on the water, a panther wandered past a sparrow's nest. "Where are you going?" asked the sparrow.
"Left!" said the panther, but the sparrow did not agree.
"That way lies danger. Down is far better." But the panther did not listen, and took the path to the Left. Soon, a great wind rose up, and the panther found his way blocked by falling stones.
He turned around, and was soon back at the sparrow's home.
"Up is now better for you," the little bird chirped helpfully.
But the panther would hear none of it. "Before you said down! And I was nearly killed by falling stones... now you suggest I climb that rocky cliff? You know nothing."
And so the panther took another path leading to the Right. But soon, he found his way blocked by a river, that had swelled with recent rains, its course recently blocked by more fallen stones.
Meekly, the panther found that his only option led him back in front of the sparrow. With just a bit of sarcasm the panther asked the little bird, "Where would you have me go now?"
    "Right!" he chirped.
"But I just went that way."
"Right!"1 Something about the little bird's cheerfulness made the panther think it was worth trying.
Just as he set out on the path, the earth rumbled and shook, and the stones blocking the river fell further down the steep channel. The river found a new path around them, so that when the panther reached the point that had previously been blocked, it now was easily passable. The river was at its usual level, and a few leaps from stone to stone got the panther across easily.
Remember the Chirpy and the Panther as you continue your travels into the forest and up the Mountain, aspiring students of Searchfu !

ucim congratulates Morobu and the others on making it this far, but urges them onward. The Temple of Cuelessness is not a place to linger. There are many more steps ahead.
All bow again, then ucim un-kneels, arises, and leaves the room.

1A play on words.

Yes, I think I declared my intentions in that regard... back on NP1581 :D

Well googling gives this: image

I just realized that since this is based on me saying "molpy on over", why is it BlitzGirl with the google result? I see that, if I were to click on that redundant omission I might find my post there... But, yeah, I think Google loves BlitzGirl (and not me). lol

It seems I should repeat my reply to this: @BlitzGirl herself was the first to use the phrase, here on NP1458:
BlitzGirl wrote: Yep, I was bored, so I molpied on over there.

(emphasis added), and this was found with the Emacs regular expression "\bmolp[iy].*\bon\b.*\bover\b".

azule wrote: morobu, happy tp is my favorite. I would be happy if I saw that every time I changed rolls. lol But what the ch*rp is that contraption?

It is a place for recycling used paper cups. "紙コップ 以外 捨てないで ださい" (Kami koppu igai sutenaide dasa i) says "paper cups other than throw away do not please" (because Yoda would say it that way) Google translates it as "Please do not throw away paper cups other than" but of course it's really "Please do not throw away non-paper cups". And yes, コップ (koppu) literally means "cup", it is a loanword from English, one of thousands brought into the language during the post-WWII reconstruction, see Gairaigo.

Speaking of wobbling, my cool HD monitor wobbles. It's how it came, with a plastic base. I don't know how to solve it, but to replace the base.

Unsolicited advice: If I got stuck with such a thing, I suppose I'd use epoxy to glue a small piece of wood to the back somewhere, then use screws to attach a larger piece of wood that serves as a strut. Perhaps you need two struts (left and right) or just one (center). Then put rubber feet on the bottom of everything. If the whole assembly is on a solid surface (like a desk or table), I think you could make it non-wobbly.
Or, use @taixzo's idea and make a full stand using lots of wood, suitable for attaching to the monitor using those 4 mounting-screw-holes on the back of the monitor that are arranged in a 10-centimeter square (You'll probably need to remove your existing wobbly stand, and on some monitors, including mine, the mounting-screw-holes are concealed behind a removable panel)

balthayyyyyb.txt wrote: Ok, I won't quote the rest. The word for year doesn't start with 'y' either. We don't start words with 'y'.

Oh, yes, that was kinda silly of me. So ... what's the supposedly self-explanatory explanation for "yyyyyb.txt"?

Purplepants77 wrote: ... yes I know you warned me... but really, how could I possibly believe that game based around the concept of making virtual cookies would be dangerous?? I had to see for myself. Bad move heh heh..

karhell wrote: I guess the warnings were a tad too cryptic (or OTTers are just too attracted to anything with a link to heed warnings ^^)

I find it hard to believe this and this were too cryptic! :P so I'd say it's your 2nd suggestion, the reverse-psychology "oh, how can it possibly be that bad?" effect. Of the suggested remedies, I'd second the one by @ucim at OTT:1983:36.

ChronosDragon wrote: Oh weird. I bet I know why though—PHP is ducktyped. 0 == null == undefined == false == "". And since http://link.link/ just shows an underlined http://link.link/, PHP considers it equivalent to the same thing with a 0 in the middle.

Sounds plausible... which suggests that a floating-point zero should also do the same thing, but:
But only the 0 and null string give the self-tagged URL result.
    Nevertheless, a workaround: Use a CJK fullwidth '0': ,
or any number of similar characters like Ø: Ø.
