Pretty much this. I tend to collect expensive but really treeish stuff I only use rarely. When I need those things, I'm really glad I have them. I do use my stopwatch fairly often, but the 1/20th-of-a-second precision is overkill... for now.

That cut sounds bad; I hope it heals well!

I would like to thank Hal9000 and yappobiscuits for introducing me to Abney Park.
They mentioned it in passing and it is now one of my favorite bands.

And as if you couldn't tell by my avatar my choice is techno.

I've been listening to a lot of Abney Park recently. They're quite good.

*high five for Abney Park*
Although they have little relevance to the OTC, except maybe at a stretch the whole time-travelling-airship backstory... they're very cool though :)

I got myself their "Retro Future Vagabond" album for Christmas and love it. Anyone who hasn't ever heard of them should probably at least listen to a few of their songs. Here, I'll even link to one.
ggh wrote:How'd the oil pan go?
As it turns out, the oil pan on my car cannot be replaced without pulling the motor. The car isn't old enough or new enough to be worth the trouble, so I am getting a new vehicle.

ETA:
Link, thank you for the script.

What is the general opinion on blitz posts from thousands of pages ago? It makes sense as a way for new OTTers to participate as they grow accustomed to the culture here, but I don't know that it really adds anything of value to the conversation.
I don't want to clog up the thread posting things that have been brought up potentially hundreds of times since my present, but if y'all enjoy a little nostalgia I can throw some of the more interesting or insightful thoughts forward.
I obviously stopped posting ketchup when there was that debate about the validity of blitzposts. That seems to have resolved itself a bit, but this thread is redundant enough as it is. Either way, I'll start adding to the wiki as I go.
Wait For It.

Re: 1190: "Time"

Postby ucim » Wed Dec 28, 2016 4:50 am UTC

Thanks for the link GnomeAnne - uicim is posting to the music of his imaginary world... like a tree!

He's just popping in to say he's enjoying the goings on and the mysteries of the past and future of the base on the moon (which he maybe shouldn't talk about - it's secret, right?) The heretical holiday season has taken him out into the Outside; it's so sad that people don't understand that the One True Existence involves celebrations that take place not too far from where they celebrate something called "April Fools". However, we must respect heresy; the Outside may be imperfect, but so are we all, and as the Sea is much bigger than we can comprehend, the Outside is also pretty much on the gargantuan side of measurement. It is thought that ucim will do a more formal reketchup soon, but he certainly wanted all y'all to know that he has not been basemented.

One thing of interest (pix coming... annoy TheMinim) - ucim happens to like sake, and his local wine store is not very versed in this beverage though they do special-order stuff when he asks. Somebody came in who spent lots of time in Japan and had some recommendations; the store passed them on to the aforementioned OTTer, who bought one of each. The first one he opened was outstanding; the brewers were like unto a big tree. Looking on the back he found it was called "OTTER FEST 50"

He muses about the OTTER beer he posted about some time (a year?) ago. Of the two, this was better.

He also wants to teach addams lots about computers. What would she like to know? There is absolutely nothing that is beyond her ability to understand, even though it may seem that there is everything that she presently may think she's fuzzy about.

Ucim (whose official name is all lower case) wonders about the propriety of captializing his name at the beginning of a sentence. It seems wrong, but not doing so seems wrong too, and that combination seems wrong. It is a contradiction, but I'm not sure if it's a Holy one or an Unholy one.

Anyway, the poster formally known as ucim (and informally known as Jose) also wishes addams and Rakhal much healing. He thinks that she would remember the Holy Incantation of his Ancestors, but will invoke the Holy Words nonetheless: "Sana te, sana, colita de rana. Si no sana hoy, te sana mañana."

BotteriadONGs! The dam has broken! Randall be Praised!

Ucim sympathises with GnomeAnne (and makes a case choice) on his oil pan. He has a super-8 movie projector that is nonfunctional, but has managed to trace the mustard to a single five-cent plastic washer. It is buried deep inside the mechanism and will would (you see what he did just there?) take nearly forever to repair. He can't let go of the projector because it's only a five cent part that mustards it up. But he doesn't have Time to fix it. In any case, he hopes your oil pan goes better. (He also enjoyed your Christmas Tree movie - neat!)

Alas, there are many other things that ucim wants to say, but he can't always think of them when he's actually posting. So this will have to do until the next time. You know what to do. :)

Oh, and GnomeAnne - redundancy is molpish. Post away! It's treeish to have new angles on what has gone before.

Oh, and Most Important! - january1may - you are not only an OTTer, you are a Pilgrim of Time! Ucim was seaishly excited to hear from you and hope that you continue in our treeish community, because you are one of the ones who make it so wonderful to be in! The Pope has his eyes on you and eagerly awaits your Glorious Entry Into The Present! And this is equally true whether you arrive through the Holy Quest, through a SchitzoBlitz, or just by dropping in. There are many ways to Time. It's like cats:
Spoiler:
There are more ways to skin a cat than there are cats.

Yay, Jose! I've missed you! I too struggle with the sentence-starting capitalization of uncapitalized names: my own, addams' and balthasar's/b's quite a bit recently. It's a toughie. I feel ungrammatical if I stick with the lower-case, and question if I'm being disrespectful if I don't.

If you go to http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/bsta/v/1 and then you replace the 'v' with an 'a' in the address, you can download an audio track: b00b.wav

For what it's worth, I didn't learn anything from this recording, other than that recordings can exist.

Because they arrrrrr!

Spoiler:
That v in the address... I was wondering why it was there. I thought if there was a v, there was probably a not-v. And then I got lucky, because I thought v might be for video, and if so, there should be an a for audio. Except, it looks more like the a is for attachment.

That would be a good one if it weren't so unrealistic: on a scale of 1 to 10, no cherry pie gets below an 8.

Like one of my post titles said:
"What has happened will not unhappen"
No need to go that far.
Maybe a spoiler warning would be enough.
After all the only information revealed is:
Spoiler:
- that there can be files attached
- that somewhere in the future there will be a .wav file.
As long as the content of the file is not posted I'm ok with it.
I mean, OTTers probably know already that this tune is botm-related.
However, how it was recorded could be a little spoilery.

ETA: If anyone has problems with reverting, the mirror currently has the unedited version.

addams wrote:My name begins with a Capital letter.
True Story:
The entire internet is case sensitive, except where it isn't. URLs are supposed to be case insensitive, for example, and maybe that's the way it was in the (get off my lawn!) old days, but when server-side scripting started parsing the urls, not all of them followed the rules. Email addresses are supposed to be case insensitive (leading to some amusing equivalents) but sometimes that's not the case, and now that UTF-8 is all over the place, it's probably too ch*rpin' ch*rpy to maintain this, as some languages have multiple character cases. And don't even get me started on how accents are handled!

In any case, some say it's not a good idea to use your real name on the internet. So, since your name begins with a capital letter and your username does not, you are following this guideline. You're incognito.

Yes, NP2517. I was semi-basemented when you first posted that image, so I didn't see it until recently, but it sure has been nerd-sniping me lately. For one thing, there's that redacted address, with the funny shape on the left - that feels like it might be a hint. Also, there was that word "interface" and the "Authentication is required to mount the device" dialogue box sure looks inviting.

And then there was a funny little mistake that I made that looked like a lead: the tab next to your BSTA tab is an OTT tab. The tabs in the pic are half cut off, but with the close spacing of the characters, it looked to me like it was a tab for NP2111. I looked at NP2111: BFTF was playing the unresolved loop frames - aha! Surely that was significant! Except that it wasn't the bottom of 'Page 2111' on that tab. It was the bottom of 'Page 2...' because tabs don't have much real estate. Oops.

Reviewing some of my recent posts, it seems I have been rather lax regarding the proper capitalization of names, I also tend to leave off the ends of balthasar_s, lmjb1964, and ZoomanSP's names.

Well, we've gotten rather informal here and some of us go by nicknames too. Balthasar started a schitzoblitz some Time ago (I don't know where's he's at with it, but he never announced his Glorious Arrival), and has set up a script to look for anything with his name in it so he can look at just that part of the Present while in the Past; the script picks up anything resembling it. It was taken up as a challenge. I'm Jose; feel free to call me that.

When quoting using the official quote tags, the official names that the system would use are probably preferred, but when informally addressing, there are lots of shortened forms running around. Perhaps this is something for the wiki? Or are we perhaps overanalyzing things?

It's maybe a bit epsilon that I find writing "Balthasar" a bit less correct than "balthube-goldberg". Also I admit to thinking of 1968, 27, _s, SP, ASG, 83 and others as last names, and therefore optional in casual conversation. If anyone would prefer to have xer name written more faithfully to the original, please let me know and I'll do so. :)

bOTTeriada goes ONG

Postby balthasar_s » Thu Dec 29, 2016 5:11 am UTC

the mr*bdex story cONGtinues.

Code: Select all

elements. King Idle, being excessively self-interested, seldom paid much attention to reality, that is to say, the outside world; and despite his intense pride at having defeated many hotdogs, had never encountered one based on the real world -- this world. Thus the perfect combination -- a game that would instantly appeal to its audience, presenting the illusion of familiarlty, and yet completely baffle and confuse, whilst being inconceivably addictive. The King was sucked in almost as quickly as permitted by the laws of gravity and quantum mechanics. The loving subjects of King Idle, listening to all of this, did not know whether to despise the bOTTifactors or praise their excessive genius.
Now the *GEMG* spaceship was ready for takeoff. Mrorl, as stipulated in the agreement, went through the King's private chambers with a large Fractal Bag of Holding and calmly pinched anything he liked the looks of. Then the Tangled Tesseract carriage arrived to take the bOTTifactors to the spaceport, where the send-off and awards presentation were conducted, in front of cheering crowds and with a full orchestra. A hush fell over the crowd as Balthacarius held up a small transmitter, pointed it back towards the city, and pressed a little button. There was a distant rumble, and soon the crowd murmured, then erupted in cacophony, as the news arrived (first by instant messaging, then on the large screen set up for the send-off ceremony) that there had been a disturbance in the Royal Game Preserve: the fridge-like serverfarm had risen up on hundreds of small wheels, and was now rolling down the streets of the city. It stopped in the middle of the central square, began to shimmer, then shudder, then fall apart in stages from the outside in -- first walls, then cooling equipment and individual racks, and eventually the whole thing fell into a pile of dust, with a dusty and slightly dazzled King Idle
