Awesomful OTTercomic, StormAngel, and molpish to see you!

And hello to micdi, treeish to see you too! I hope you'll stick around. Thanks for the DesertBus notice. I've missed it ever yip so far, and seem to be missing it this yip as well. Maybe next yip. It seems like an awesomeful thing that I would really enjoy following. I love the whole premise of it.

Back from a wowterful vacation in Mexico, and having a hard time returning to what we loosely refer to as reality. As least I have today off from my FFS. I guess it isn't my MFFS anymore. :(

Sending good thoughts to all affected by the terrible fires here in California. Has anyone heard anything from azule lately? I know he was in the area affected by the fires in the last couple of yips. I hope xe's ok.

Greetings every OTTer.
I have been watching.

I, just, didn't have much of anything to say, until now.
Now there is hotdog in another corner of the Forum...

And;...well...They want you.
We want you to come to a Party?

Will you?
Won't you, Please.
Come to a Party.
Spoiler:
December 24, 2018, will mark the ten-year anniversary of the Count to a Million thread.

Feel free to drop by that thread now in Forum Games, if you'd like to help us to get farther along in time for the party.

(It would be cool if we could get to 90,000 by then. And it would be even cooler if we could get to 100,000 by then! OTTers, come and show us how it's done.)

My WFFS has been ch*rping seaish lately - we turned on our new organized sands - 49 new servers. Things went decidedly unmolpish shortly afterwards so we've been trying desperately to get things working.

And, today, after we've all worked 3 weeks straight, we all got told our FFS's are leaving. My team's will be moving 1/2 way across the country, other team's don't even get that.

I can move with it or look for something else. I don't like either option much.

Sometimes I get a SMS: "WARNING: Risk of thunderstorms/high winds".
"Yes, I've noticed."

We crossed the Spring threshold a few days ago, and we've already had both sunny hot days and, today, rain.

[Editor's note: last edit on October 4; resuming.]

NP2569 features molpy names and talks about the weather. NP2571 is subtitled Cinnamon Petunias.

NP2572 has lmjb1964's woodworking and adds a new drawing to my OTT archive. BlitzGirl also recovers a link to a copy of np1, which while no longer accessible, had found its way into the Wayback Machine quite a few times. It's also a different file from mscha's; maybe the latter has been optimized for size?

I'm sure there was an userscript to duplicate the spoiler button at the end of the spoiler, and back then I had written (adapted?) something to try to fix the jump-after-close issue.

[Editor's note: NP2573 completed on November 16, 2018, 00:52 to relevant soundtrack.]

Oh, no.

bsta frames.
New bsta frames.

They are made by actually drawing them,
then scanning,
then editing to make actual frames.

I need a scanner.
I don't have a scanner.
I live in my own home now and there is no scanner here.

Yesterday I visited my family.
I brought a device I made they were waiting for.

I also used their scanner to scan latest bsta drawings
to finally add new frames and make the story go faster again.

Today I wanted to start editing and making frames.
I just realised.
I somehow haven't actually saved the scans.
I don't have them.
I can't continue working on bsta right now.
I don't know when I will be there next time.

this is not good at all.

ETA: Other bsta-related thing.
Do you remember frame 142 and 143?

Balthasar, that's a very sad story! How long will it be till you can scan them again? Send them to me, I'll scan them! Of course, that's probably the least efficient way to get them scanned.

That sounds like it must have been very frustrating, balthasar_s. And it would be very molpish to have BSTA update more frequently again, however practised in following the first command we may be. Maybe it would make sense for you to buy your own scanner now?

Yes, it would.
Actually, I do have one, here.
It is an old scanner from my uncle's old FFS.
It is working (probably) but it has to be connected to a computer with a scsi interface.
I do have a 486 computer (in parts) which has a scsi controller so it could maybe work if I rebuilt that computer, connected everything, installed, got cables, and so on.
Or I could just buy a new scanner...

We're getting closer to the end of year.
So it's time to go back to the topic of the epilogue sequences.
Here is my prediction for 2019:
Image
And here is a spreadsheet which calculates the predictions using the formula I discovered (4290711, 4291337, 4291564, 4293613, 4296461):
epilong-predictor.ods
(98.98 KiB) Downloaded 31 times

(ETA: for some reason when I open it on my other computer the conditional formatting on the right side is lost)
I'm very convinced that my prediction for 2019 will be correct.
But 2020 will be very interesting.
We will see if my formula is complete or maybe it needs another element.

I noticed that the epilogue page of mschaviewer is mustarded.
https://xkcd.mscha.org/epilogue.html
It shows times up to 2018-12-05 which is in the future.
It looks like it got out of sync for the first time in January:
2018-01-25 one frame is repeated and then everything else is late by 1 hour.

Luckily we have also mrob's page:
http://mrob.com/time/epilogue-sequence.txt

I think it's time to add my discovery to the epilogue page on the wiki.
I don't like the interface for editing the wiki but if I don't add this probably nobody else will.

Oh, GLR referenced The Core. The movie that was so hilariously bad that unlike other bad forgettable movies, this has stuck with me for all those years. So I guess it wasn't so bad after all? Speaking of which, I don't know what this is telling but in the past few years, I've started rating movies not based on how I liked them immediately after I watched them but on how much of the plot I am able to recall a few weeks later.

Anyway, hi everyone! How have you'all been lately? Image Seems like the winter is coming once again, I even saw a few snowflakes today! And so my bicycle finally stayed on the moon in the basement and will probably stay there until the spring. But since there's now not enough space, I had to come out of the basement myself! And because I don't really know what to say, I'm just typing this nonsense.

I have found a formula which correctly generates the epilogue sequences for the years we know so far (2013 - 2018)
I'm 99% sure it will also correctly generate 2019.

I'm not sure if it will be correct for years 2020 and later.
If GRL's algorithm depends on the digit of tens of years then we will have to update.
If not, then we have the formula which should correctly predict the patterns up to 2099.

I made another spreadsheet:
epilong-predictor-2.ods
(46.29 KiB) Downloaded 32 times
In the blue field in upper left corner you can input the year and it will generate the patterns for the year.

{Blindpost from NP 1242}

I'm getting a very real sense of tension from wondering whether the end of the comic will come before or after I get to the half-way point of this thread. So exciting!

Yes, that is a rather obscure thing to be excited about.

So I guess it wasn't so bad after all? Speaking of which, I don't know what this is telling but in the past few years, I've started rating movies not based on how I liked them immediately after I watched them but on how much of the plot I am able to recall a few weeks later.

When I was a kid I genuinely loved that movie, probably because I didn't know how inaccurate the science behind it was at the time so thought nothing of it and just enjoyed it. So when I got older and learned from the internet that it was universally considered a "bad" movie I was quite surprised, given my fond memories of it. But I suppose, looking back having grown up and being more discerning, I can now see why that is. I still think the soundtrack is legit really good though. Bad movies can often by saved by a good soundtrack. Disney's "Dinosaur" for example was a pretty naff movie that had an absolutely stunning soundtrack that's still one of my favourite film soundtracks of all time.

Hey, it's yappobiscuits! And The Minim with another molpish OTTercomic!

New BSTA installment:
!!!

KXA: Dead in space.
We'll wake up dead.
In space.
B: That's what he said.
KXA: Yes, he wasn't serious but he was right,
This is exactly what will now happen.
B: We're not dead right now if that's any help.
KXA: But for how long?
How long can this place keep having air?
Food? anything else to keep us alive?
B: Oh no. You're right,

Congratulations, now he is in panic mode too.

If they could be transported there, so can air and food and water.

Hopefully, when the next BSTA frame ONGs, Balthasar will have uploaded some more so that we don't have to wait as long for the next one anymore.

That;s why I want to go back and blitz bsta. I get confused about which thread of reality is which.

It's always a good idea to keep track of your various threads of reality.

Hello my molpies!

As some of you know, my mathematician father died last month. Among other things, he worked directly with Kerr, Schild, and Penrose.

So I have a question. If I found a handful of books that look like they originally belonged to Arthur Sullivan Gale (strangely, these are German textbooks that were re-bound in the 1970's), are there people who would find that cool? It looks like he (Arthur Sullivan Gale) penciled his name into the blank pages of the front matter of these books, i.e. these books apparently belonged to Gale once.

Note that I have been able to identify some of my dad's other ancient books via Amazon, bookfinder.com, or abe.com. And I know that I can contact university math departments and other places.

But I really wanted to get a knee jerk reaction from my mathematics friends here.

LURVE YOU ALL!! MWAH!!

lmjb1964 wrote:That;s why I want to go back and blitz bsta. I get confused about which thread of reality is which.

Is it really so confusing?
I don't think so.

Anyway here is an overview of the "realities" so far:

Bsta at the beginning looks like it is a story about some guy doing things. We have B in a kind of realistic world.
There are some things like the name input or the narration not agreeing with "our" actions which could suggest there also could be a level above this story.
But nothing is shown yet.
Ok so B talks with some people online, then goes outside, takes his bike and goes to check something but gets two flat tires, talks by phone and starts fixing the bike.
At this point we get the possibility to leave B alone and "be" someone else.
This part is the KXA doing stuff in a rather normal world. The interface is still being a little meta sometimes but nothing big yet.
KXA leaves the room and goes by car with FTH. In the car she reads 2 fragments of her story about Old Joe and Young Joe. For a few frames we're one level deeper. We're in the Old Joe and Young Joe story.
The story is interrupted by a phone call from B which confirms that KXA's story and B's stoey are the same reality.
They realise they have to meet B and change their plan slightly.
And now something important happens:
We see the tape interface being used to go forward with the story.
So it confirms that there exists a reality (with the tape interface) which contains the story of B in it.
They meet, KXA and B go look around. They cross the gate, then they notice a building, go inside and accidently activate something.
Somewhere near this point BSTA gives up and stops pretending to be what it isn't.
They get relocated, together with the whole building. Even the narrator doesn't know where they are.
We get the chance to 'be' fth now but we don't.
So the narrator goes to find out. We're left alone.
At this point we're again in the high level world.
We play a game recommended by the narrator "Skalniacy Adventures 3: Robotic Madness"
For some frames we're in the gameworld.
After doing some things a s a robot in the game we crash the game and stop playing it.
Again in tape interface room. We play with the interface and see the "other side of the story":
We're now in the story of a photorealistic guy drawing his story.
We realise what it is and we want out of this.
Something interesting happens:
Our commands to take the tape out and reverse it are performed in two realities at the same time:
The guy reverses a tape in his world while we do the same in ours.
We're out of that story and in the room again.
Narrator returns and uses a software tool from a floppy disk to locate B and KXA.
(and also he notices we unaligned the tape buit we don't admit it...)
With B and KXA found their story can resume.
They are in a completely different place now. Soon they realise what it is and panic begins.

Can you still call it blitzing if it's been five years since I started and I'm still not halfway through?

I really want to know what you guys have been doing since the End of Time, but I don't like spoilers, so I guess I'll just have to...

Firstpage: NP0001, March 2013
Current location: NP1245, July 2013
Location of my first post: NP1641, December 2013
Current lastpage: NP2662, November 2018

So it's taken me five years to read through about five months of posts. The comic is coming to an end soon, but I still have more than half the thread to go... Either it will get much quicker to read as the content of the thread shifts after the End of Time, or it will get much slower to read without the impetus of watching the story...

Baobabs!

Svenman, what do you think of that? IMHO you should come first.

Being a German physicist and mathematician, I feel tempted to jump up and shout “That's for me!!!”. However …
buffygirl wrote:Note that I have been able to identify some of my dad's other ancient books via Amazon, bookfinder.com, or abe.com. And I know that I can contact university math departments and other places.

… I think that's the kind of place where this kind of treasure belongs.
(Anyway, if they don't value it, I'm prepared to jump up and shout. ;))

mattachu wrote:Can you still call it blitzing if it's been five years since I started and I'm still not halfway through?

Yes, definitely. I dare to add that this is even the most holy type of Blitzing, since it involves a lot of waiting for it.

Don't fear T** **d. Molpish things are waiting for you.
