On the beanishlang blog, tresoldi mentions Lojban as an interesting theory to investigate. I don't know Lojban either, but some time on the dictionary shows that they definitely would put something at the start to denote "big". In Lojban, big is barda, and bra+noun1 is a noun that is big in comparison with a standard [noun]. So xamsi is sea, and braxamsi is ocean. This certainly lines up with our big water, big building (castle, which is bigger than normal buildings), and big person (leader Rosetta, who is large in stature). Also, Lojban only has numbers 0 through 9. 40 would be said as four zero, which is why Rosetta didn't know the word. She could probably work out "five times eight" though, based on the reference that shows this example (emphasis mine):
the-number three plus four times five
equals the-number two-three
3 + 4 x 5 = 23

Anyway, just some random musings since it's my day off work. Putting this out there in the hopes that someone here does know Lojban and can comment further :D

1I say noun for lack of a better understanding. Noun isn't quite correct.

I really don't know what most of this means beyond the probability argument. But, what if the empty books is simply a technological circumstance. Let's say the ink disappears over time, way into the future. Therefore: Blank. Let's say Google was successful in scanning all the books of the world, creating digital copies. Let's say Google Glass is also a success. Therefore in the (alternative) future you simply pick up a book that used to contain (say) Gone with the Wind and you open the pages (or not, your choice) and start reading it through the visor. Tell me why a library of blank books can't logically exist? *sigh*

UPDATED GRAPH: OTC vs. OTT Activity, "End of Time" 128-day version. This graph plots OTT posts directly against newpix ─ or where newpix would have been, after "The end." The more steeply the line climbs, the more rapidly we were posting to the OTT. This graph is again presented both with and without additional marks.

On the unmarked graph you can easily see an increase after the "real castle" appears, reflecting our efforts to decode Rosetta's garbled speech and our frantic discussion of her revelations. At "RUN" there's another strong upsurge of posting; somewhat to my surprise the OTT then slacks off for a while, perhaps because all we saw were landscapes we'd seen before. But it picks up again when they start finding their people, and at "The end" the line becomes nearly vertical, showing an even larger surge in posting than at the end of the Fading.

(Note that the red marks show someone's latest post as of graph time, not necessarily their final post. There's a red mark for each of us, so naturally they cluster toward the right.)

DrSamCarter wrote:And what a beautifully designed sudoku, intheshax.

ZoomanSP wrote:Treeish sudoku, intheshax!

Thank you and you're welcome everyone. For anyone who worked it, I'm curious how you all found the solving experience. I have not had much feedback on my custom puzzles. I have been feeling they are too easy for real puzzlers, and have been OK with that, given my past audiences. This is a different crowd, though. One who can offer an informed opinion.

I tend to spend a bunch of time working on the starting grid. These are usually gifts, so I like to use an attractive radially symmetric layout like the pros use, but with the other design constraints I basically can't also wind up with a tough puzzle. I don't really even expect them to solve it most of the time, so I care more that it looks good and spells stuff up front. I went back to this one with pencil and paper today and solved it by hand, and it seemed pretty OK, even though its solvable only with what my software calls "naked" this and "hidden" that.

Any real sudoku hounds who'd like to describe what they like in a puzzle, how hard they like it to be, what solving techniques they like to use, what makes a puzzle too easy and/or disappointing or too hard?

BlitzGirl wrote:(And your redundant spoiler is impeccable :) )

Yay! I was *not* going to ask how!

Wowneat! I figured someone was likely to post a solution, but I did not expect it in one hour, and in the same format as the original! Thanks for blowing my mind!

And I think I owe apologies(?) of some kind:

yappobiscuits wrote:Randammit, I can never resist these, now I have to pause my ketchup to solve it...

So consider them offered, jeff and yappo!

And finally:
yappobiscuits wrote:Neat! It's been a while since we had an OTT sudoku, mathrec used to make them for us but we've not had one for a long time...

I did not realize any had been posted before. It looks like the older ones were posted during times when I just *could* *not* *keep* *up*! I wish I'd done a search. I like what mathrec was doing with the tinted spaces that make a message once the grid is filled in. I might have included something like that. Maybe. If it didn't make me feel like it mustarded the symmetry all up. Next time, I guess we'll find out.

Thanks for reading,

The GLR has made it, someone proficient in Lojban is actually needed. In fact, I intend to delve into Lojban grammar in the following days; I remembered the numbers-as-combination-of-digits after posting (as I said, I studied Lojban for an afternoon when I was a teenager) but wasn't aware of the "bra-" prefix, thank you for that. In fact, I hadn't even googled for Lojban prefixes because I remembered that Lojban don't have a plural mark (at least in the way it works in English, an affix, or Italian, an inflection). I will probably focus on the phonology first, if you want to explore more of Lojban semantics and morphology it would be great!

Blindposting from NP 1331

I am finding it hard to keep up! And there are so many awesomeful OTTificications that I ... well, don't have the Time (:() or energy to quote, but please know that they are all appreciated!

Mostly I want to let you all know that I'm still around, and also appreciate that when you think of hats, you think of little ol' me -- of course, if you didn't, my feelings would be dreadfully hurt, so it's good all around.

I am so glad that our community is remaining together and cohesive and stuff like that. You all are such special people!

Okay, so the start of this somehow popped into my head this mornip so I had to write it.
An OTTification of More Power to Ya by Petra:

Code: Select all

The OTT's been getting slower, slower ev'ry day
And despite the threats of basement, OTTers just won't stay
But good things come to them that wait
And refuse to evacuate
So molpy up and wait, just wait for it

Keep waiting for it
When you're Blitzing through the thread
When you OTTify or Ketchup or just post "it isn't dead"
Keep waiting for it
Cos you know you're not mislead
They that post upon the thread, they shall be blessed, they shall be blessed with molpies!

Randall promised all his OTTers newpics for a Time
Randal finished when he reached three thousand ninety nine
But this is not the end for us
No need to cry, no need to fuss
Just molpy up and wait, just wait for it

Keep waiting for it
When you're Blitzing through the thread
When you OTTify or Ketchup or just post "it isn't dead"
Keep waiting for it
Cos you know you're not mislead
They that post upon the thread, they shall be blessed, they shall be blessed with molpies!

Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments about my sandcastle adventure. It was fun to build, and just a little sad to see it wash away. But that is how the world, and time, works. I wish I had spent more time here, this evenix, but I found myself doing a bit of research and writing instead. For me, this was a good evenix to be a lurker.

With that, I hope you all coma well, have a wonderful dip, keep the faith, and OTTify it.

OTTify it...
OTTify it...
OTTify it...
OTTify it...
OTTify it...

Molpy down!

Blind posting after a wix away re-creating the OTC. Seaish ketchup, but it is nice to see OTT is going strong yet.

Highlights:

1. We saw a yurt on the way to the trail-head (An auspicious start)

2. We sat around the camp fire watching the stars.

3. Heard night ch*rpys

4. There was a shooting star. (No long tail though...)

5. We carried good bags.

6. We climbed well over 2000 ft. in our journey. (I noticed it too...)

7. We saw Neat trees.

8. There was good molpy hunting, small and large.

9. A molpy made an angry noise at me, but it was probably a badgerpy rather than Lucky. Left before I could see it. It had a growl, not a hiss. (Climbed to top of ridge, but instead of panoramic vista found angry molpy. Would not scale again.)

10. Sat on the shores of bodies of water. (Mountain lakes, so heath instead of sand. No castles. *sigh*)

11. Encountered abandoned camp sites.

12. Saw small wowterfalls and streams.

13. Carried water bottles.

14. Ran down the mountain

15. We may have been playing the part of the Beanies, as we found two confused travellers at the bottom of the hill in need of rescue. Seriously, who uses a lure on a fly rod? (He is big, he probably knows what he is doing.)

16. We told them to go up the trail, to the top of the mountain.

17. Saw molpyraptors eating insects.

Notable discrepancies:

1. No sea at the bottom.

2. No wowtrees.

3. No snakes.

4. No river.

5. No raft.

6. No towers.

7. No castle at the top of the mountain.

I did have to work a little to ensure I got to 1337 before the page was over. And as I expected my idea of getting to be pope of 1337 with my 1337th was done away with while I coma'd.
Anyhow, I'm glad you enjoyed my contribOTTions. (I assume you liked the redundastuff too?)

Awesomeful, and thanks for sharing.
Was there a ledge near the shores (or anywhere on the heath)?

Climbing mountains is no fun if there isn't a castle at the top :(

Actually, yes it is. Climbing mountains is less fun if there isn't a castle at the top

I've added section headers to the OTTercomics wiki page to make it easier to find a specific comic. However, it mustards the table if you try and edit by section so use the page edit button instead. Fixed

2000 ft. isn't all that much, not enough to notice any thinner air or anything... sure you don't mean meters? Or by "noticed" did you just mean you got very tired? :P. Anyway, glad you had fun and enjoyed many OTC-ish moments :)

Steakish job!

Also one of the OTThercomics lead me to read the thread about family decals where someone used the word 'wow' and I immediately thought "Treeish!"
