I've had this tab open all day, and I must say that looking at the page when the picture updates feels like christmas.

This new picture makes me sad.

I'm not extrapolating these images to Randall's life. I'm looking at them as they are.

The others had a sense of 'alone together', kinda. They were sad, because the figures seemed a little disconnected.
However now, I'm sad because she's alone, and she's continuing the castle herself, alone.

I agree. Feels like he went to get something or had to leave for another reason, but intends to come back later.
She might want to surprise him with the bigger castle when he returns.

It could be that she's making a sand person to replace the one that left...

Naw, she's building the Great Wall of China or something like that.

Personally, I was disappointed when they built the first extension to the original sand castle. I was hoping for something different, like a knight to go with the rook. Or maybe a time machine made of sand, since that would go with the time theme.

ETA: Just had a thought: maybe she's building a trebuchet to attack the castle.

Oh my, what if it went on and on while the two of them (sometimes just one) kept building and building sand castle upon sand castle, until it filled up the entire image so it was nothing but black? I wonder how long that would take at this rate.

So she's either...

a) acquiring more sand, as she's run out of available sand near the project
b) preparing to make the castle/fortress into the frickin' Walls of Babylon
c) digging a hole down by the water to get some of that good mud
d) beats the crap out of me

Anyway, I left work, went to the store, came home, put the groceries away, and checked in... only to find the dude left. Hrmph.

So I was thinking of how long this could last. There are 48 images per day, that's 2 seconds of standard movie (or 1 second of Hobbit). If he has created just a 1 minute long animation, this would take a month to play! If he made 10 minutes long animation, it would be 10 months. And if it has the length of standard animated feature film, let's say 1 and half hour, it would be running for approximately 7.5 years. Of course it wouldn't be a problem for Randall to draw new 10 minutes of animation every 10 months so this could easily run forever. So I'm just afraid we're all waiting for something that could happen within several months or years.

except its fairly obviously not supposed to be 24 frames per second. look at the HUGE gaps between some of the frames.

I'm starting to think that the point of the comic is to see how long a group of people will submit themselves to voluntary sleep deprivation. I mean, I'm ready to go to bed, but there'll be a new pic in ten minutes. I think I'll wait. And then by the time I'm actually settled in bed, I'll have to grab my laptop and wait for the 4:30 pic. And then 5:00, and 5:30's right around the corner, and then ohwellguessitstimetoquitmyjob

does the image update at regular time intervals? if so, how long between each frame?

Every thirty minutes.

Did anybody else notice the five white pixels along the base of the new castle? Is it relevant, or just an imperfection in the drawing? Does it matter that there's five? Five more pictures until the dude comes back from whever he went? Am I suffering from insanity brought on by fatigue? Should I go to bed now? I should go to bed now.

G'nite folks. I'll be back in a few hours. My prediction is still Civ1 Palace... with a moat.

Converting your units from "pictures per day" to "minutes of animation per ten months" doesn't change the reality that it would be a lot of work. Even with stick figures on a background that changes only a little bit each time, drawing a picture at presentation quality would still take at least a few minutes, not including the time it takes to plan out future drawings. If we assume that he only takes 1.5 minutes to draw and upload each ensuing picture (a really low estimate), and that a new picture is needed every 30 minutes, then he'd be working on it 72 minutes a day on average, or 5 percent of his total time. If he did it in 8-hour marathons, it would take 45 of those marathons to get 10 months of pictures done. It's not impossible, but I don't think he would devote that much time to one installment of his comic for the rest of his life.

EDIT: I haven't read all the comments, but has anyone considered the possibility that this is all leading up to an April Fools' Day conclusion?

Think it will stop after 48 hours (when the next comic goes up), or do we have to ...

wait for it?

Given the amount of data in click and drag and umwelt, I could see there being weeks or months worth of pictures stored up for time.

I thought the frame at 10:30pm PDT was the end, them saying "later", "bye" to the viewer. My girlfriend did too. She seemed happily in bliss thinking it was so simple. I wonder if the rest to come will shatter that.

When this went past midnight I was finally on the side of this lasting longer. I'm now thinking a full week. Thank god for the primis gif. 8-)

I hope you are generally correct, except that if you leave it open for a month there's a bonus frame where Godzilla steps on them.

Hmm, I guess if it's long enough, a little silliness in the middle wouldn't ruin the sincerity. Not sure I'd agree with Godzilla. As others have said, maybe raptors or red spiders. :)

If I hadn't already joined, this one probably would have been the reason for me too. This is my first time actually commenting on the comic itself...

It sorta feels like we have (been passively forced to) come together to bond over this mystery. Randall, you shrewd sociologist.

I'm thinking waves have already been eating away at the front wall of the castle - that's why it's needed repair a couple times and why she decided to build the defense moat/walls.

Count me in among those who registered just to share the joy of experiencing this with the rest of the forum.

I must say that all of the interpretations, the attempts at codebreaking and the tools built to keep track of the images really add a lot to what Randall is already giving with what is probably his best comic up to now.

Thanks guys :D
