Hello all!

Given that I didn't prepare anything special for my past decimal round number milestone, I decided to do that at least for this binary one. And as I've returned to putting in work on the One True Wiki (the last eighty or so pages of this thread should be pretty well covered), this special present to the OTT is on the wiki too.

OTTerladies and GentleOTTers, may I introduce to you:

I had first assembled those on the wiki page for general Time artwork, but then realized that the xkcloud art had gotten so prevalent around a particular portion of the OTT that its own wiki page was in order, and that such a new page would make a molpish RNM present to you all as well.

And yes, I live in Germany, I just provided a link to and some hints about earth.nullschool.net when ggh was talking about how windy it was in Wellington and was searching for a visualization tool.

Enjoy the rest of your Sundip!
Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

Addams thanks all of us who helped. Her life is much better now.

Randallspeed to all blitzers on the One True Thread!

Report from the TARDIS

Postby mrob27 » Sun Apr 19, 2015 7:19 pm UTC

I've been on quite a journey lately. In addition to my forum sadness, and the all-too-familiar two-wip fear and anxiety recovery period, I've been learning a lot about how I approach certain political issues, and about online discourse in general. I've realised that I have never codified my approach to online discourse. For example, only last month did I write a webpage explaining why I am not qualified to attempt to debunk mainstream theoretical physics (something which, for some reason, many of my readers seem to want to do, judging by the amount of email of that type I receive.) I'll be able to write up a few more webpages, and that's molpish.

I also had a bit of botcastle mustard last wip, on MP16, the 8-core Nehalem system that has been doing most of my OTT-RELATED work. Briefly, it overheated and I fixed it using essentially the same skills @balthasar_s uses. <computery-stuff>:
Spoiler:
The Northbridge chip (providing the link between CPUs and all I/O, but not memory) overheated again after its thermal paste dried up. When reassembling the system I forgot to reposition the CPU packages themselves in their LGA-1366 sockets, and as a result, two of the 2,732 CPU pins were bent. I was able to fix this, but it appears that the Northbridge is still overheating despite my best efforts. It may also be faulty RAM or any of the other common problems that make computers freeze up, but I've done a pretty thorough job of diagnosing the problem as hardware-related. So I'll be replacing parts of that botcastle, and getting spare parts at the same time to handle future failures. Eventually the whole thing is going to be replaced with a 20- or 24-core Haswell system, but I'm not ready to spend money on anything like that yet.

I'm running the critical stuff on other botcastles. Miraculously I managed to get through this without missing a single nopix of the epilogue sequence, which despite @mscha's testament to the contrary, has not displayed any anomalies.

Partly caused by both of the above things (my forum-related fear and anxiety, and botcastle mustard) the bOTTeriada (or mrONGbdex story) had slowed so much that I think you were getting only one line of text per dip. I have fixed that by finishing the work on the subsequent chapter (i.e. the one following the one which is ONGing now) and adding it to the queue. @balthasar_s will have noticed irregularity in the timing of the mrImageNGbs (did I spell that right?) which was because of the botcastle failure.

bachaddict wrote:I think Reddit Gold lets you hide posts you've viewed already. Probably doesn't work on comments.

Thanks, but I would still want to look at the already-viewed posts. My desire is to go through all posts to view all new comments. Naturally I'm not going to do that on a really popular subreddit like /r/thebutton, but there have been smaller, less busy subs where I wanted to do that and couldn't. That makes Reddit less like a library and more like switching on a TV and seeing whatever happens to be on at the time.

Anyway, this should go away once I figure out how I broke the build system. Well, not the build system, but the live-dev system. ETA: found the problem. I dropped userland promises in favor of native ones but forgot these don't include a .denodeify.

bOTTeriada goes ONG

Postby balthasar_s » Mon Apr 20, 2015 4:11 am UTC

the mrONGbdex story continues.

Code: Select all

Balthacarius meanwhile set up his account on the planet's only other forum, which was ruled by the mighty Demon @@Simidirkar. This Mod also delighted in online debate, and he too worked heaviliy on attack methods -- but in a creative way, for his forum was generous with words, and he was a great patron of the creation of new words and nonsense. He loved anagrams, ambigrams, acronyms, portmanteaus, puns, pig latin, neologisms, Norwegian, and nonsense. A person of feigned sensibility, he trembled every time he wrote a new <*:argumentum verbosium:> to be waged on the other forum. And he lavishly rewarded archives of locked threads, paying according to the number of distinct flamers ensnared, so that, on those endless walltext pages with which the archives were packed, wordcounts reached up to the sky. In practise he feigned ignorance, yet with loquacity; a &/\/\0r0|\|&, yet manipulative. On every anniversary of his rise to Modship he mandated the annual Ritual of Madness.

I showed the limerick I had written to my dear friend Kat and she came up with a limerick of her own in response! With her permission, I can share it with you here:

I once met this shy guy at work
Who looked at his screen with a smirk
He told me 'bout Time,
OTTers writing in lime
So now he's my weird friend from work.

Earlier already, when I had first shown her the OTT and in particular song ottifications, she had come up with some ideas of her own for one. I still have to put a few finishing touches on it, but I hope to share that one with you as well some time soon.
Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

Addams thanks all of us who helped. Her life is much better now.

Spoiler:
Wait for it.

Did you notice …
… how Image is learning a new language?
Spoiler:
She noticed that Megan wanted to describe something, and repeated her “weird”.
From Megan's “yes” she concludes that she correctly grasped the meaning of “weird” as something which applies both to her own drawing as well as to what Megan is trying to describe.

Please do. That heresy has gone unOTTified for far too long!

And the Great Lord Randall said "Wait for it", and there was Time.

Todip I took a photo which can be seen as an OTTcolorisation of this t1i frame with a rabtor and a vulpy:
Image
(Click on image for seaish version.)

Explanation:
Spoiler:
“Where a vulpy and a rabtor are saying good night to each other”
is a German saying for “a really secluded place”.

This is an ad by a seaish German Internet provider
who promises to bring fast Internet even to this place:
