mrob27 wrote:Perhaps their designers realised that reliance on the user "seeing" something invisible is poor user-interface design.
I'm going to disagree here. (Note - on the concept of "hidden text") I think it very much depends on context, and whether the hidden elements are content, metacontent, or additional content.

The footnotes in the what-ifs are another good example of the usefulness of hidden text (though it's implemented with javascript, not the title attribute).

Consider a calendar whose entries might be in the form:

time: "1pm to 4pm"
item: "Lunch with Barbara"
location: "Angie's steakhouse"
comment: "Off hwy 35, the red building after you turn right. Bring that thing we talked about"

The thing you want to see on the calendar is the time and the item, but you want easy access to the rest of it. If you make the whole thing visible, the calendar becomes visually unwieldy and it's actually harder to find appointments of interest. But if you put it all behind a "more" button of some sort, you can present the list of appointments in a compact form, while granting access to the rest of it upon demand. Title text by itself may not be the most obvious way to do it, but it has been well supported in the past and has become a common way to provide additional information (such as what a link does, where it goes, or why to use it).

There are things that don't belong in title text. Actual content is one of them. But meta-content is not. It's a very appropriate use of an attribute for which there is no good alternative.

mrob27 wrote:...if you are using tooltips to explain how to use the website, then instead you should provide a long, well-written, thorough, and extremely detailed manual...
This can lead to information overload and a barrier to entry. Sometimes it's best to have a "more info" popup next to every relevant item, which provides (guess what!) about just that particular item.

While the latest CSS is coming close to having this, I can't guarantee that all my users will be using the latest version of the latest browser on the most up-to-date equipment. So, to create this effect I have to fall back on universally supported attributes. Like title.

The design trick is to make the existence of this "more info" apparent. But when browsers stop supporting it, that's no longer even possible.
Cool watch ggh!

I'm sure there's stuff I wanted to comment on which has slipped my mind, but my mind is quite slippery. So, that's it for now.

Thanks, slinches, that makes sense, and suggests it would be hard for me to predict. I should just submit more often, and ETA stuff if I need to look away before finishing. I sometimes do that, but now that I've said it, maybe I'll do it more consistently. Also, nothing wrong with using the Save Draft button.

My good Laura Mae, I do say your kitty brought forth an unexpected chuckle. Good show!

ETA: hmm, looks like getting the Little Wonder to eat a decent breakfast shouldn't be followed by watching her dance in circles.

t1i – It's Green Everywhere

Postby SilentTimer » Sat Apr 25, 2015 2:16 pm UTC

One year ago, SilentTimer wrote:

*** STARTING THOUGHT TRANSMISSION FROM THE PAST ***

April 2014.

Cueganzzle are approaching the lake.
This means: more plants.

Fortunately, it's easy to draw a plant in GLR's style.
Just convert a photo to a silhouette.

Right?
Spoiler:
On 26 Dec 2013, BlitzGirl wrote:I agree with azule, this isn't GLR's art style. Those are photo-real trees rather than referenced silhouettes.
She's right.

*sigh*

But it worked so well for the molpies!

ImageImage
Image
(This is not a rabbit. See the tail.)

And it worked so well for the Bongka tree!

Image

For other plants it worked better to draw them from scratch and to use the photos just for inspiration:

Image Image
Image Image
(Photos by various sources; click on the images)

But how to draw more trees?

They have more individuality than those riverish plants. Neither method yields satisfying results. (GLR is a wise man. A seaish fraction of Time takes place in the desert.)

SilentTimer wrote:After that I must cheer up Cuegan, so let's place the tsee-chirpies over there.

O GLR, I'll need a tree for them.
I need it now.
RUN!

Let's try a combined method on this tree.

Image

First, turn the branches into a silhouette.
Manually.
(Thank GLR for the graphics tablet!)

Image

Scale it down and draw the leaves, using the photo just for inspiration.

Image

Now let some other plants crawl up the stem (like on GLR's trees) and integrate it into the scenery.

Image

Okay. This will do.

Image

Now we can face the lake.
What about this?

Image

The lake is surrounded by it.
How to draw it?

Let this be the lakeshore.

Image

There's grass.

Image

And there are some plants.

Image

Now comes the reed.
Let's switch off the grass, and draw their stems.
They are more or less vertical lines, not just black, but with tiny shades,
regular, but not too regular.

Image

Oof. Okay, now add the leaves, like in the photo.

Image

No. Too bulky.
Try again.

Image

Better, but now they don't look like leaves.
Try again.

Image

Okay. This will do.
Let's switch on the grass again, and add some more plants which grow inside the reed.

Image

Now overlay a layer which makes all plants blue.

Image

That's it.

Image

Okay. Where will Cueganzzle go next?
What complicated things will they encounter which I must draw?

My appeal for UI-related policy was out of line, or at any rate, I was definitely not being molpish. But we're essentially saying the same thing. If you consider the footnotes in the What-Ifs to be "invisible", then my concerns are moot — the thing you touch to reveal the footnote is visible and obvious because it looks like a link.
You also mention information overload — but that will only happen if the user actually reads a lot of documentation without finding their answer, and that will only happen if the product is dreadful and the documentation poorly organised. So you'll be fine, unless users are abandoning your product out of frustration, but if that happened then the company would find out and fix the problem.
So it's just another example of me being an atypical outlier. The world isn't here to make me happy, and that's okay! :P

@svenman: Seems to be ok.
I'm working on adding my OTTified songs to my website and I noticed there are many missing in my records. Do you know how complete is the wiki list?

I've recently hitting the login attempt limit after a single attempt (and correct, for LastPass auto-fills the fields for me). Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

mrob, balthasar_s: The only domain nginx serves the mirror for is 1.mirror.chirpingmustard.com. ETA: But, as it's the only configured server, it's possible it's being used as the default one. I'll fix this in a minute. Also, I don't own that domain.

Nothing unmolpish about disagreeing - ni ni ni and all that! Nothing unmolpish about the way you did it either. Smopu hvala nuvi dict amusah.

The problem (with website design) is that CSS does not support all that it needs to, browsers don't support all of CSS, and users can't (and shouldn't) be counted on to buy and install the latest {whatever}. So, we have to design with what's out there, and the design will be non-ideal, because what's out there is non-ideal.

Awesomeful "Making of", SilentTimer. Even though OTTers may have detected the subtle treeish differences, the atmosphere of the original continued. It still amazes me the creativity and effort put into all the OTTer contributions (and I really must find time to review them all, including balthasar_s's, because I sometimes lose the needle-pulled thing of stories).

It is very obvious that a seaish amount of time goes into things like Time After TIme and bftf and similar.

Imagine what might happen if OTTers had more Time.

the mrONGbdex story continues.

  "&Wut R U r34d1|\|9?&" replied Balthacarius, surprised.
"&Pr1v47e l0gz&," replied the veteran, attaching a pixelated screenshot with a glimpse of the realname and Facebug profile of one of @@Gursagar's most vocal posters. This surprised Balthacarius even more, and he said:
  "&1138, but no. BUT I CN HAS /MSG PR1V1L3G3S?&"
  "&WUT 4?&"
  "&Ph0R #e LULz, wut 3L$3? n00B!!!&"
  "&I haz sokpu441ts! I p0st 4U!!&"
"&Very well then&," said Balthacarius, finally giving up on trying to write in #L337#. The veteran troll linked to another thread. There, though it was 3 A.M. on a weepend, several were posting in rapid succession. As soon as he submitted one simple, direct query they all questioned him on several points, vaguely suggesting dozens of unrelated but nonethelsss irresistable contradictions. He was trapped in a quagmire of confusion. These forum members turned out to be part of @@Simidirkar's special enforcers. As soon as he had made enough posts to gain PM permission, his account was locked, and as he stared at the screen, sysops walked into the room and siezed him from behind.
"<*:This must be some sort of mistake:>," thought Balthacarius as he was brought to a dungeon and set upon a foam maiden. Patiently he Waited until mornip -- there was nothing else he could

In OTTer news, I'be had my second OTT meetup of the week--with a certain foxmolpy named azule. It was very cool.

I'm working on adding my OTTified songs to my website and I noticed there are many missing in my records. Do you know how complete is the wiki list?

Not as much as I'd prefer. There are periods of the OTT which have been well covered in the wiki but there are also gaps, some of them fairly seaish.

ETA: And thanks for checking the song lyric listing!

Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

LOOK ON MY BLUEHANCEMENT, YE EE:EE:EEING, AND EE:EE:EE!

Postby mrob27 » Sun Apr 26, 2015 9:42 pm UTC

I added "EE:EE:EE" to automeme as a verb, like @balthasar_s has done, but I don't know whether it's transitive. Can something be ee:ee:ee'd by someone? OTT:2220:29 is the first usage. I also added it as an interjection alongside CH*RP.

Thanks  uhhh..., di amwah hala li?
But I was just ranting (without the courtesy of </rant> tags) and showing that I am stuck in the past. My formal education in software was at Dartmouth, who placed great emphasis on making everything self-documenting and intuitive. Most modern websites would have earned an "unsatisfactory" grade if submitted as a student project (possibly with a citation for exceptional effort) because they're too hard to figure out.
But the world has moved on. Most people are perfectly happy to just bash around for a while, clicking everything in sight, until they figure out how to get it to do what they want. People treat websites like a videogame. I do too, perhaps because it's fun, or perhaps when I have no other choice, and the risk is low. The worst thing I've ever done is accidentally "like" or "upvote" something I didn't mean to, and then fail to figure out how to "un-like" it. No great loss.
So really, I should stop complaining and get used to it. Of course, if I can't figure out a website I just abandon it, but that is rare. The best websites for me will always be the ones that emphasise scholarly content, and lack any voting or comment/chat/soapbox facilities, and those tend to be plain text anyway.
