NP 2300 Smiley Repository

Sadly no, but there is a brand named Rivers!

E:E:E, as a verb would mean something like to panic because a time after Time has stopped.
mrob27 wrote:but I don't know whether it's transitive. Can something be ee:ee:ee'd by someone?
It's already epsilon enough that this is used a verb so being transitive wouldn't surprise me.

The origin of E:E:E:
There is a timer below the bftframe. It shows the time to the next ONG (at the time of loading the page). Sometimes it shows something else. At ONGtime it's 00:00:NG (a reference to SilentTimer's avatar).
Once I wasn't able to upload the frames in time
balthasar_s wrote:I had to choose between preparing for an exam, scanning the frames and fixing my bike. I had to follow frame 0266
. In this situation the timer made no sense, so I changed it to E:E:E (or, in other words, I EE:EE:EEd it :) ). That was a reference to that in the ct-if some values are mustarded to "E"s.
Sustainabilizer noticed it and said "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!", so I FTFied it to "EEEEEEEEEEEE:EEEEEEEEEEE:EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!". That was of course just a joke, so I had to add it to automome. :)

mrob27 wrote: But I was just ranting (without the courtesy of </rant> tags) and showing that I am stuck in the past. My formal education in software was at Dartmouth, who placed great emphasis on making everything self-documenting and intuitive. Most modern websites would have earned an "unsatisfactory" grade if submitted as a student project (possibly with a citation for exceptional effort) because they're too hard to figure out.
But the world has moved on. Most people are perfectly happy to just bash around for a while, clicking everything in sight, until they figure out how to get it to do what they want. People treat websites like a videogame. I do too, perhaps because it's fun, or perhaps when I have no other choice, and the risk is low. The worst thing I've ever done is accidentally "like" or "upvote" something I didn't mean to, and then fail to figure out how to "un-like" it. No great loss.
So really, I should stop complaining and get used to it. Of course, if I can't figure out a website I just abandon it, but that is rare. The best websites for me will always be the ones that emphasise scholarly content, and lack any voting or comment/chat/soapbox facilities, and those tend to be plain text anyway.

<rant> ( ;) ) Frankly, I find it extremely steambottle when a website takes any effort to figure out. I don't want to bash around for a while, I don't want confusing icons, I emphatically don't want everything to render as epsilon characters because I have JavaScript disabled and a CDN can't load. Practically no modern site actually obeys the standards it claims to obey (by means of doctype), and practically all of them require JavaScript enabled for no really good reason. To be honest, the abysmal quality of modern websites makes me yearn for the flashy, ugly mid-1990s Geocities sites made by twelve-yip-olds, because those sites at least had readable text-based menus instead of renderfailed CDN m*stard and those molpych*rping hamburger buttons you see everywhere.

Maybe I, too, should just stop living in the past and move on, but I honestly don't want to. I consider the recent trend in web- and software design to be a disease that must be stopped. I want my software to be mostly text-based (even for inherently graphical software, unnecessary graphical effects and excessive use of icons are to be avoided) and my websites to be lightweight and simple. All of it should have good accessibility. Advanced features may be put in a menu, dialogue, or human-readable config file, but should not be made unavailable.

Whether I actually go on to use a poorly designed website depends on how important its content is to me. If I want to read a news article or whatever, and I can't see the article because I don't have JavaScript enabled, I'll just abandon it there and then, and perhaps try to find a less steambottlish source if I really want to get the information. For things that are more crucial (e.g. a webshop where I want to buy something), I'll begrudgingly enable JS and use the site anyway, but having to do so will still annoy me in any case.</rant>

GIF Smiley Annex: Specialised OTTer avatars

Postby mrob27 » Mon Apr 27, 2015 12:56 pm UTC

The Newpage 2300 Smiley Index is near the post limit of 60,000 characters, so I'll be pushing certain special categories of smilies into their own lists in separate posts.

This is the first, and is for special variations of OTTer avatars. For now these are mostly mrob27 variations, because I've made so many.

mrob27 : facing right facing left bouncing skipping TARDIS arrive TARDIS leave TARDIS looping pope (mitre fell) pink pink facing left pink bouncing pink pope lime lime facing left lime bouncing lime pope RILYBOT logo hollow outline blue acid trip

The main GIF smiley index is at the top of NP 2300.

PACKAGE CONTAINED MANIP. WOULD BUY AGAIN

Postby mrob27 » Mon Apr 27, 2015 3:58 pm UTC

Thanks for the EE:EE:EExplanation, @balthasar_s!

@Link: Mobile apps are quite the m*stardch*rp, aren't they? On the one hand, they need to be easy to use and easy to figure out, without lots of stuff accessible only through extra steps; but on the other hand the screen is tiny. This is why so many mobile apps (and mobile websites) are a "baby" version of the real thing. I count on my phone for… making phone calls. Anything else I manage to do on my phone is an accidental bonus, which will stop working the next time they push a forced software update downgrade on me.
Hamburger buttons, I'll have to remember that.

Wikification
of this thread's haiku: long a
glaring omission.

This state of affairs
shall continue no longer.
A start has been made.

Edited to add:
No more just a list, now an
own page of haiku!

Edit 2: Word changed.
The new choice sounds more natural
in the English tongue.

That reminds me, castraftle is not the only word i mispronounced. There is also xkplainxkcd.

mrob27 wrote:@Link: Mobile apps are quite the m*stardch*rp, aren't they? [...]
That's what happens when a phone is used for non-phoneish things.

Websites: I think I already soaid something like that. You make a website to present some information. If people instead of seeing that information have to figure out what to do, you're doing something wrong.
Unless it's a puzzle and figuring out things is the goal, like in the bOTTeriada stories or before BFTF started.
I tried to make my ott-related website in a way that will not generate unnecessary problems.
On the main page there is a list with links to all the things. The pages are either static html or cgi-generated.
No Javascript. Except for the mirror which reuses some Javascript from the OTT phpBB. And other interfaces, like the Silent Chronotransponder which also reuses the Javascript that makes bbcode appear when you click buttons. And spoilers.
It will work correctly without it. (Except spoilers).
Also, google said my website is not mobile-friendly.
I'm not mobile-friendly either :)

I like how this phpBB is. Except two things.
The "Page 2300 of 2300" text is actually a link. and clicking it will make a javascript appear and say "Enter the page number you wish to go to: __". Who would expect that?
On the mirror I added an input field and button to do the same thing in a visible and javascriptless way. But I left the original too.
Before the "quote" button picture is loaded you don't see anything. No text or anything. So you can't click it.

Code: Select all

<li class="quote-icon"><a href="./posting.php?mode=quote&amp;f=7&amp;p=3782639" title="Reply with quote"><span>Reply with quote</span></a></li>
There is this "Reply with quote" text, but it's invisible.

Code: Select all

ul.profile-icons li span {    display: none;}
. Because otherwise it woud appear in front of the button picture. Because this: Image is actually the background. But why all this?
On the mirror it's the same because I only noticed the problem recently.

The database has the things on top replaced by a hamburger when the browser window is below some width. But the hamburger doesn't work. It's just a <a href="#">.

When I was blitzing (which I had to stop but I will continue some time in the future) I was adding ottifications to the database. I also add haiku. It didn't take much time to do it and to see if it's already added. And it's much faster to do it when blitzing than if you had to go and look for the ottifications. But adding to the wiki is too much time for me so I don't. I don't know what I will do when I blitz to ottifications that don't have a database category. Like timeaftertime manips.
I think the reason why there are no new things added to the database now is because you can't do it just after the ottification was posted. Because it doesn't know about the latest newpages yet and will not recognize the post number. (At least it was like that when I was still blitzing). I think I already said that too. Also, this post took me an hour to write.

ETA: Today I was re-reading a book. There was a fragment about a civilisation based on mustard.

Good luck, my blitzing friends!

Postby mrob27 » Mon Apr 27, 2015 7:06 pm UTC

I didn't know about that "click on the Page 2300 of 2300 text" thing until I had blitzed about half of the thread. It sure would have helped!
The rest is in a Spoiler: because it's wrong. Thanks, @slinches! Image
Spoiler:
For me, the biggest hidden problem on this website was the lack of a link to the forum-wide search. Did you even know that there is one? It's here but the board index has nothing, unless you go into your Preferences and change "My board style" to "subsilver2". Then it's in the upper-right along with "FAQ", "Members", and "Login/Logout". There are other things that get mysteriously hidden depending on which board style you choose.
The search box that you are shown is just for searching the current thread, like this, and it only gives one option (a single piece of text to search for). Think there might be more? I just mentioned that there's a FAQ, so let's RTCF1:
Soneone in the phpBB group wrote:How can I search a forum or forums?
Enter a search term in the search box located on the index, forum or topic pages. Advanced search can be accessed by clicking the “Advance Search” link which is available on all pages on the forum. How to access the search may depend on the style used.

Of course, there is no search box in the board index, and no "Advance Search" [sic] link anywhere, even in subsilver2 style, and apparently, How to access the search may depend on the style used is their way of saying "you can't access search at all unless you are using one style, but we won't tell you that."
The advanced search options are actually really good but I didn't know about it. I ended up using Google for a while (with "site:xkcd.com" as part of the search text), which works surprisingly well, and then writing a bot to download the entire OTT just so I could do advanced searches!

Long ago I AdBlocked the blue "echochamber" bar because it took up too much space, and apparently I had never noticed that the search is there. It seems that my stylesheet (based on @AluisioASG's) also hides that header, so even when I disable AdBlock I still don't see it. Bad mrob.

mrob, is there not a search in the upper right hand corner of every page? There is for me in prosilver. It should be on the far right hand side of the "echochamber" header, like this:

Note: you may need to view this in a new tab or image viewer to see the search box and link on smaller screens.

I am so with you on that! But part of what makes a website (or any software for that matter) "intuitive" is the context of experience the user brings to it. That has also changed. Case in point - controls should look like controls (i.e. blue underline) and it should be evident where they go. The only reason the stylized letter 't' is an acceptable control is that twitter is so universal. 'twasn't alwasy so. And for a small screen I see nothing wrong with a hamburger button (though new to me, it's fairly evident what it is, and once you know it for one site, you know it for all sites.). For a large screen however it's just another step to have to go through. As a web designer I try to balance between user comments "it's hard to figure out" and other user comments "there's too much explanation".

Link wrote:I consider the recent trend in web- and software design to be a disease that must be stopped.
Me too. So much me too! But when I design a website for accessibility, I get complaints that people won't use it because it looks out of style.

But the real problem is that every web designer re-invents the wheel so that their site looks unique. And that every browser forces web designers to reinvent the wheel because they support (or drop support for) different features.

mrob27 wrote:Hamburger buttons, I'll have to remember that.
Especially hamburger buttons that lead to hotdogs. :)

balthasar_ wrote:Also, google said my website is not mobile-friendly.
That probably means it doesn't claim to format itself for small screens. If you are already using a flexible layout, (so that as you shrink the window, the elements rearrange and reflow intelligently), all you have to do is say so in computerese. In the <head> section, put:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
This tells the mobile device not to do its usual trick of pretending to be a different size. If OTOH your website does not behave nicely when you shrink the window, that is what needs attention.

Maybe it will get people to stop designing websites at fixed widths like they were pieces of paper.
Svenman - 1138 for your wikiwork, if I didn't mention it before. It's quite seaish what you've done there!

I didn't see any tags but it sounds like GlaDOS. When they reach Rosetta, will they find that she's the one singing? Steakish job on the third one! :)

bOTTeriada goes ONG

Postby balthasar_s » Tue Apr 28, 2015 4:11 am UTC

the mrONGbdex story continues.

Code: Select all

do -- whereupon he was brought to a larger, softer foam maiden for interrogation. It turned out the veteran, the lurkers, the backtrolling -- all of both threads, in fact -- all of it was a trick to catch flamers' sockpuppets. But Balthacarius was not subjected to a long inquisition; the verdict was swift. For attempting to post the query to the linked thread, the punishment was a mip of forced labour at a wordfilter camp, because the forum's own bots (designed to counter the con-bots of @@Gursagar) were too busy coal^{3}-mining, and Balthacarius, for his part, repeatedly refused to send any message via sock-puppet. Nor did he have sufficient &Simdri#Kash#^{TM}& to mitigate his offense. Still, the prisoner continued to profess innocence -- but the judge did not believe his pleas, and in any event would not have had the power to free a stranger and suspected flamer, as it was outside her jurisdiction. So the case was appealed to a higher court, and Balthacarius was transferred to the capital where he was pelted every nopix on the ONG, though more as an observance of tradition than of any real necessity. In a dip or two his case improved; finally acquitted, he left the courthouse and proceeded directly up the high street to the palace of Mod @@Simidirkar himself. After being scanned for hidden spying equipment, then fitted with hidden spying equipment, briefed thoroughly on forum etiquette, and taught how not to misspell the username of His Modness, Balthacarius obtained the honour of a private chatroom over an encrypted channel. They also gave him a megaphone, cymbals, rattles, an air horn and several smaller noisemakers, for every forumite was obliged to announce xes comings and goings in the loudest and most annoying manner possible, as such was the way of Simdrikarnan trolling.
@@Simidirkar did in fact demand the most advanced Semantillogical Bots, to read the fora (both his own and those of @@Gursagar) and spam them with naively inane statements or queries intended to draw

@slinches corrected me, thank you! I haven't seen that blue "echochamber" masthead at the top of the forum for years, because I AdBlocked it. It's also rendered invisible by my stylesheet (which is based on @AluisioASG's). I've known there was an advanced search, but recently I have thought there was no way to get to it… I suppose I forgot about the link because I had hidden the masthead, then stopped trying to find it once I had all of the OTT in a textfile and could just use regular expressions.

ucim wrote:I didn't see any tags but it sounds like GlaDOS.

Yes, there are no "tags" on the YouTube videos (or maybe I AdBlocked them! :P). Only a Category (People & Blogs) and a License. My guess is that @Caprice's "tags" are something that exists within the video editing software that was used to make the videos, and that @Caprice does not realise that they get lost when uploading the video.

ergman wrote:It really had trouble with the word newspaper though.

You mean the niet een paar? For added enjoyment, turn on the auto-generated subtitles (actually, that's good advice with almost any YouTube video!) I wonder what language it becomes if the Dutch words are robo-synthesised into a video soundtrack?

I wonder how well newpixbot sings?

Probably about as well (and about as frighteningly GlaDOSish) as imagebot's OTVO audition.
