Re: _SUSTAINABILIZE HARD 2: SUSTAINABILIZE HARDER_

Postby Sciscitor » Thu Aug 06, 2015 5:08 am UTC

svenman wrote:Now in Austria, it is in my experience in all fields of society even today much more common to address people with their academic degree or with a title derived from such a degree, and to omit that in any kind of formal setting would widely be regarded as impolite. So with your degree you could expect to be addressed as "Herr/Frau Ingenieur" (with or without your family name appended, depending on the situation), I would be addressed as "Herr Magister" (that form of address is completely unknown in Germany), and Sustainabilizer would of course be "Herr Professor". Maybe one of our Austrian OTTers can add something to this from their perspective.

As the resident Austrian OTTer I will try to contribute to the titles discussion. (Spoilered for seaishness.)
Spoiler:
I can confirm sustainablitzer's, svenman's, and NoMouse's observation that academic (and other titles) are widely used in Austria. Alas it is not (any more) to the extent as it was. The Austro-Hungarian empire had the habit to substitute higher payments for its officials by lending them a whole variety of titles. There are different groups of titles like
- academic titles (Magister, Doktor, Professor o. and ao., Diplominginieur, Diplomvolkswirt, Diplombetriebswirt and so on with some recent - and to my taste quite superfluous - additions of Dipl.-(FH)-Ing., Magister (FH), LL.M., Bachelor) all of which became part of the name and can (and sometimes have to) be used in offcial documents;
- Amtstitel (like Prof., univ. Prof., Hofrat, wirkl. Hofrat, Oberamtsassistent, Regierungsrat, Oberregierungsrat, Beamter, Diplomrechtspfleger, and a whole other bunch which used to fill about two pages of now discontinued Austrian Amtskalender);
- then there are quite some honorary titles (Kommerzialrat, Ökonomierat etc.).

Having said that, in every day life they are not used als that much any more (with the exception of some academic titles). As a rule of thumb the more technical the field, the less those titles are used.
It is not uncommon to address someone with such a title in an ironical and joking way (Like: "Herr Doktor, kannst Du mir bitte den Radiergummi rüberwerfen?" ). There are a few people who are offended when they are not addressed with the appropriate title, but this is due to some form of narcissism, insecurity or plain douchebaggery.

Nevertheless it is still considered to be polite and a sign of good upbringing to use the correct title in formal conversation and official occasions. Personally I do not care for the use of my title and do not use it in any surveys or private paperwork. Nevertheless - though I never tell them to use it - it tends to crop up in my bank account, insurance papers and so on. Once people I deal with know there is a title, they tend use it.

There also are titles which do not exist any more, but are used anyway, simply out of a kind of historical inertia and custom. When I started to work at my FFS, it took me quite some time to realize that it was actually me who was addressed by it. After about two month I simply gave up - it was simply too impractical to tell everybody not to use it. I also had the impression that people felt more comfortable using the title than not using it. After many years I also came to the conclusion that it even sometimes helps in my kind of FFS.

The german habit, not to use any title at all - even when people are just introduced - feels somewhat impolite to Austrians (and me), as is greeting strangers or business partners with "Hallo!" and "Tschüss!" These forms (or rather "Servus!", "Griaß di!" and so on) are exclusively used between persons who know each other and are not addressing each other formally.

Molpish lyrics, Sustainabilizer! Image

I had my music on shuffle todip and this gem by Marsh'n and Eutychus came up. I'd completely forgotten about "Wowtreeful World," and it's really quite a wingish rendition. Originally suggested by Eutychus on NP953, lyrics posted by Marsh'n on NP962 during the Long Night, recording uploaded by Eutychus two newpages later. Tag-team ottification!

It isn't, but from all recordings I found in a web search, this one is closest to how I experienced this song when I was a child. (I found many other recordings, but they weren't that molpish. Many are even spoiling the wait for it by filling it with noises, someone saying „Ups!“ (= “Oops!” – same pronunciation), or other nonsense.)

TFDA Senior OTT Analyst Sciscitor, thanks for the insights into the Austrian view on titles. It will probably even help me when I visit Austria next Time.

Congratulations on your new EFS, Neil_Boekend!

I spent a whole lot of time in a waiting room yesterday, which was not unlike my time in this Waiting thread. People were all really nice because it was all strangers trapped in the same bizarre circumstances, and none of us really wanted to be there. Whenever somebody would get called out, everyone would cheer and they would wave as they left, wishing "good luck!" to everyone still waiting. There were people of all ages and cultures and such as well, just like here. Still, I'd much rather wait for it than blood tests and the like. Just thought it was a neat little parallel.

Awesomeful phase diagram BlitzGirl! But I think you forgot one of the phases: "Ice Ice Baby". Is it hidden in the mustard?

edit: I see there's mustard in my mustard. It's the original. Ice sure should have known better. No semen, coffee, cancer, or babies. Except for the missing Ice Ice Baby. Which is, you know, missing. :P

You can't see it because it's so small, but "Ice Ice Baby" is the connecting line between Vanilla Ice and Queen/David Bowie.

Took me a minute to see what ED did there. :)

Loved that recent Drawception, game, BG, and all of the OTTerComics.

Congratulations, Neil!!

You helped Addams stay in her home, and gave her a better life. She thanks you, and so do I.

Neat! Do let us know if it happens; we'd be happy to show you around some of our local Outside sights if you had Time for a visit :D

Ironically, it was the bridge (Time can bring you down...) which inspired this, yet that part doesn't directly mention Time anymore :oops: :? :roll:
Anyhow, I've been learning to play this song on my piano, as ED can certainly attest to. I can't promise that I won't record it with my version of the lyrics, but don't hold your breath (or other waiting-related activities) for it.

Page 300 reached!

I've read a lot of newpages with interesting events. We had the formation of the Knights Temporal organization, and BlitzGirl reading message sent into the past. (See Smithers on page 203, and a sig on page 219.) People have once again been editing posts, including the poem ("Stopping by Fora on a Caffeinatedcancerbaby Evening") on page 283 that I quoted last time. I guess that poem was originally posted on a later newpage. Now I'll have to find what newpage that was...onward!
