I can confirm sustainablitzer's, svenman's, and NoMouse's observation that academic (and other titles) are widely used in Austria. Alas it is not (any more) to the extent as it was.
[...]
The german habit, not to use any title at all - even when people are just introduced - feels somewhat impolite to Austrians (and me), as is greeting strangers or business partners with "Hallo!" and "Tschüss!" These forms (or rather "Servus!", "Griaß di!" and so on) are exclusively used between persons who know each other and are not addressing each other formally.

Thank you for contributing your experience! It seems there is a development going on in all our countries towards the less formal, but starting out from different levels of formality originally and resulting in different levels of formality at the current time.

However, even in Germany it is dependent on the environment you are in whether informal greetings and no titles are used, or more formal greetings and titles. But I can confirm from my experience too that in a situation of business contacts between strangers Germans tend to communicate less formally than Austrians.

Congrats from me to Neil_Boekend too for his new EFFS!

Ironically, it was the bridge (Time can bring you down...) which inspired this, yet that part doesn't directly mention Time anymore  :?
Anyhow, I've been learning to play this song on my piano, as ED can certainly attest to. I can't promise that I won't record it with my version of the lyrics, but don't hold your breath (or other waiting-related activities) for it.

And now, a new

Wikification Report

Thanks to molpish redundancy and the ottification database, I was able to add OTT links to a large number of OTColoreds where they had previously been missing.

Some (mostly) newly encountered stuff to report on:

  • NP17: K-R notices for the first time in the OTT that posts are being shifted downthread. Five posts later, KarMann guesses correctly that retroactively approved firstposts are the cause.

  • NP881: jjjdavidson posts a song ottification fragment which leads me on a bit of research about a classic American TV music show I had previously never heard of.

  • NP1467: The link to taixzo's externally hosted ottification is dead. Has it just been moved or is it off the Net, and if so, can it be reconstructed?

  • NP1623: yappobiscuits posts a description of what the OTT's equivalent might be in a parallel universe, while SBN's haiku in the following post turns out surprisingly challenging for ucim to "get".

And the decree is images? Very well, I'm going to re-post some images where I've had trouble identifying the originals for the purpose of wikification. Any help is appreciated.

  • Earthling on Mars on NP1402:

    Image

  • waveney on NP1483: This may actually be a TimeAfterTime manip, but I haven't been able to identify the base image (assuming there is a single one for most of the image):

    Image

  • Mr Moriaty on NP1969: This definitely is a TimeAfterTime manip, but again I haven't been able to identify the base image (or is the "landscape" from Click and Drag?):

    Image

Another image-related thing is that I've been increasingly struggling with the distinction between OTC manips and OTColoreds. But I'll get to that in another wikification report because I really want to molpy down now.

And here an updated list of the pages of the One True Thread that I have covered in my Wikischizoblitz so far:

  • 1 – 18
  • 310 – 316
  • 864 – 881
  • 967 – 1014 (another gap closed)
  • 1329 – 1341
  • 1400 – 1415
  • 1445 – 1483
  • 1599 – 1623
  • 1676 – 1709
  • 1966 – 1976
  • 2125 – 2358

Molpy on!

Edit: Oh my, I'm pope. Decree: Help me find the originals to those ottifications above. Either that, or re-read a random oldpage (or one of your choice) from the OTT (at least 20 pages in the past) and post about what you find remarkable on that page.

Edit 2: Minor mustard removed, tiled GIF spoilered for seaishness.

Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

XUYS.

So in sandyhotdogland, we're working on making the TaTpix accessible. This involves navigating via 'NP 0'.
So... any suggestions/submissions on what image should be displayed for NP 0, the jumping off point for all other Timelines?
We need something, or players will think there's an error.

Thanks in advance, HV-ED.

The sig contrast script didn't work for me (Iceweasel 31.3.0, Greasemonkey 2.3.1).
It failed on this line:

Code: Select all

    this.o_green_bkg = { val: JSON.parse(GM_getValue('o_green_bkg', '0')) };

The no tinytext didn't work either. Failed on this line:

Code: Select all

    this.o_reveal_light = { val: JSON.parse(GM_getValue('o_reveal_light', '0')) };

To make it work again I had to add:

Code: Select all

// @grant GM_getValue
// @grant GM_setValue

I had an epsilonish, RELATED, dream:

There was BlitzGirl who visited me and we were recording something together, outdoors.
There was also someone else but the dream wasn't consistent who he is.

Then we had to wait for something to eat (over 1 hour, because my father was rearranging my basement).
Additionally, I had 2 kitties that I don't really have and they had 4-letter names which were anagrams of each other.

Ah yes, Rosetta and Toaster. I remember meeting them when we were recording that thing... MAYBE IT WASN'T A DREAM AFTER ALL

But surely it's Beanish, not English. So now we know that Toaster and Rosetta are four Beanish letters long. More progress has been made!

My sister sent me a link to an interesting word site and the comment that I empurple her. Well, "empurple" (to make purple) is a rather pedestrian loqution
Spoiler:
though by extension it means "to ennoble", as purple is the color of nobility, which is treeish
so I got to thinking (usually a bad idea):

Web standards (not always followed) dictate that a link is blue until visited, then becomes purple. So, to empurple is to visit one's link. To get to know; to make familiar. To educate. Perhaps by extension, to turn someone on. So, on the OTT, we all empurple each other.

And to empurple the OTT is of course to read it all. So, purple should be the color of Blitzers.

To "go purple" would be to blitz. And to "find blue" is to discover something new. Ten thousand people go blue every day, according to legend.

Thank you for noticing this, and for figuring it out!
Several1070 more scripts needed changing: a few others (that presumably you are not using) also need those "@grant" lines, and one needed a "@run-at document-end" line. I updated the GitHub repository, and if you want to look at the scripts or install them, go here.

Wikification Report - Special Issue

I created a new wiki page about mscha's sky image website xkcd1556.mscha.org. Images from that site and further manips of those have now been moved from the OTTercomics page to the new page.

If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

MAKE TIME, NOT TEMPORALITY

svenman wrote:I hope I'm not deterring anyone else from working on the wiki, am I?

I stopped from a combination of procrastination, laziness, and prioritising my own indices and lists. More recently, my failure to wikify was Wikia's fault, as they added bloat (of all types: CSS/HTML/JavaScript/whatever) making simple editing a painfully slow experience. (It seems to be usable now, so long as I have most features disabled in preferences, but it's only a matter of time before they wreck it again.)

It's meant to be "X-Men" and the drawing shows Xavier and Wolverine. The illustrator stretched the premise a bit, or is referring only to the first film in the series (and perhaps the same with Harry Otter).

Speak of facebug classification, I think it goes something like this. In the comic's Kingdom Animalia, there's two known phyla: Molpya and Lineavolucris (a latin-ish classification I just made up meaning line-bug). Under Molpya you have some classes that correspond to Outside classes, such as Aves, Reptilia (or perhaps the two are more blurred in the OTC, in some kind of Avereptilia for raptorbirds), and of course a Mammalia analogue of some kind for the small furry molpies. Under Lineavolucris we have the class Apiserpens (beesnakes), one order of which is Voltovolucris (facebugs).

I know I was advocating for Megan to ditch Cueball all those newpages ago, but when I said that, I was hoping we would be following /her/.
