Ah, yes, just like that classic Marvettes song, "Too Many Molpfish in the Sea (Big)."

In other news, I wish people would stop randomly shooting other people.

ETA: And I'm Pope! Man, that last NP went on for a long time.

Optional Decrees:
Image
1) Summon a basementee or blitzer.
2) Colorize something
3) Don't randomly shoot people. (That one is less optional.)

4) Post something! It's too quiet in here.

Indeed.

Just a quickie (I'm in the middle of TA mustard, and am using a BMTA right now) to say how awesomefully baobabishly wingish your song was Yappo! And also (having been there myself) to take heart in your own lifemustard. First Cleric learned that mustard is what makes the world go round - without mustard there would be no world to be in in the first place. He's right. It happened once, it will happen again. And it will be even better.

That Balthacircle doesn't look very circular.

And I just realized since I started using Opera for my OTTing, I never installed Tampermonkey so I have boring subject lines. Very unmolpish.

Oh right, I'm too lazy to think up my own interesting subject lines. Fortunately, I now have scripts. Thanks for the handy script page, mrob!

jovialbard! Yay! So nice to see you!

I see that you're confused. This is the One True Thread. It is a very molpish place. The place you have been in is the Basement. It is dark and cold and unmolpish. To be honest, there are lots of awesomeful OTTers down there, so it should be molpish, but it's so dark you can't see anymolpy else!

Anyway, welcome forward!

Edit to point out that there are a lot of exclamation points in this post.

I was reprogramming my STAF?, because I made some small changes to its software.
While I was doing this, it suddenly stopped counting time.
I thought I broke something.

But after a minute it started working again.

So this is what happened?

?STAF = SilentTimer action figure.
What changes did I make?:
Spoiler:
  • It's no longer limited to years 2000-2099. It now can have years 0000-9999.
  • In countdown mode, the right button doesn't reset to 0, but to the last value that was set. Left button still resets like it did.
  • If the right button is pressed when it's turned on, it will display the version number (1.2).

Yeah, it's pretty thick with this ever flowing soup of... what do you call them... humans, yeah, that's it. It's a very thin solution of Otters down there. Sometimes there's a catalyst that brings the Otter bits together and creates an explosion of molpishness, but it seems to be pretty rare. Thank you for your gracious welcome. I'm not sure how much has changed in this flux fueled fantasia. There seems to be an inverse law of chronology at work here. The faster time passes in the basement realm the slower time passes in this inverted land. Like taffy caught on the end of something... something sharp, and distant now in the back-when... sometimes time is like that though. And when you're standing on the thin bit you have to step back and admire the machinations of the whole taken together. The twist and spin of the taffy on it's spool.

Meep.

Yes, Time has been moving more slowly these days. The lure of the Outside and the Basement are strong, alas. But we're still here. I like the taffy analogy. :)

Balthasar, you go back right now and fix the skycircle before someone else notices it's broken.

My bot, along with the partly-written dragon story, seem to have fallen down the lower stairs  the ones that go from the basement to who-knows-where. I couldn't see, but I could hear mr*bdexbot saying something about a ferry across an ever flowing soup of… what did he call them? Anyway, I found a pretty molpish waterottermolpy video down here, and dispatched a little messenger-bot to play it to the three-headed wolpy, hoping perhaps that would distract the ferryman long enough for mr*bdexbot to grab the pole, turn the raftcastle around (or at least call the other end the front) and make a raptorish escape.

I think he borrows the skycircle every now and then when he needs to use the wheelstick, and replaces it with Folger's Crystals. But then he returns it when he's done, and nobody notices.

TIMBORME, RELEASE THE ONGS!

Postby Link » Sun Aug 30, 2015 4:58 pm UTC

Back when t1i was still running, I used to have a dynamically updating live ONG as my MTA wallpaper. After that, I switched to this wingghish OTColored for the longest Time. Now, I've decided I want to see Time and t1i ONGed from the start, so to do this I created a riverish2,¬ server-side Python script to point to the correct frame. I then use WebLiveWallpaper to display that image, refreshing every shortpix. (The speed at which the actual frame updates is correct; since that's always a multiple of a shortpix, I just use a 1-shortpix refresh interval. t1i starts 1NP after Time **ds.)

If anymolpy wants to see Time re-ONGed on their MTA or elsewhere, the server-side part can be found at http://users.penguindevelopment.org/Link/time/ong2.py. I chose Sunday 30 August 2015, 18:00:00 CESTH to correspond T=0, so at the Time of writing, we're at frame 2, almost 3.

ETA: spoilered for <computery stuff>:
Spoiler:
I figure I might as well post the code of the server-side part;

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/env python3
import time

ETA2: m*stard fix in post.

¬ It's actually really seaish1 because I included the whole list of Time and t1i frames in the script itself. But the non-data code is riverish2.

I'm gonna do that for every OTT-RELATED script I write from now on.

I've spent the last few days working on sfr. And trying to storify me working on sfr.
Spoiler:
And trying to write about why I can't write about me working on sfr. And trying to write about why I don't seem to be able to write anything anymore. I can see the path, but it blurs as soon as I begin walking through it. Which is not a good sensation, at all. So I guess my storywriting facet went back to lurking, like before the OTT.
Or the OTT-storywriting facet, at least. The furry counterpart seems to be doing reasonably fine, except for the stalled prerequisites pipeline. (It also doesn't seem to suffer from “line becomes graph” attacks as long as I don't include personal elements in the story. I should have noticed that way before. Wait—) And the sci-fi(general) one is pulling in data like a black hole, though Hawking radiation is awefullysome waitish.

A couple days ago I had a dream. Not a RELATED one, but nonetheless I wanted to share it.
Spoiler:
It began near a forest, I think. There were trees here and there, and also a wire fence with a written sign on it¹, like those you see around protected installations in movies. I was running away from the forest, parallel with the fence. I was scared, looking sideways every now and then, like something was after me.

[Then I let the whole day go by before finishing writing this.]

Then I was back home, and there was a flock of dogs going up the stairs outside. I don't know what exactly happened next but I have a frame of what seemed like an elongated version of one of my dogs jumping towards my arm pretty much crystalized in my mind.

After that, I woke up. But for some reason I believed I could change things, I could still win… so I went back to sleep. Back in my room, I went outside and down the stairs, helping my dogs get to the top (one of them twice; and as I realized there was two of it, so I noticed the stairs forked right above us—the stairs usually form an U when seen from above², and the new fork, while I couldn't see where it led, was both less steep and more closed) before it happened again. They were safe. We were safe.

Had it ended? Maybe. There was now something like a satellite view, zooming in on South America. I was afraid of what I would see. I wanted to stop zooming in. The whole continent was covered by dark dots. Whatever had scared me in the beginning of this dream, whatever I was running from, was now everywhereworld.

- - -

Of course, I called mom later and asked her about the dogs.

¹ It looked a lot like whatever this place is, including the “it's greener over there” part (except I think the green was trees).
² More like “pie-shaped stairs” but turning 180°. We were just below the turn.

After Link's post, I decided to write scOTT.py at last. It's a script to parse a thread page and generate the XML data I posted some time ago.
Spoiler:
I've learned a few XSL tricks, so much of the work is now done by the XSLT stylesheets once you feed them the page; Python just fetches the page, rewrites the user avatar URLs so they're absolute (http://forums.xkcd.com/download/file.php?avatar=380429_1430102158.png rather than ./download/file.php?avatar=380429_1430102158.png) and puts the files in the right place (seems libxml2 won't mkdirp for me, so I have it create p3848065.xml and then move it to p/3848/3848065.xml).

“Is this of any use?”, you might ask.
Wait for it.

So, some spambots have discovered the OTT mirror and the Mustardtime Otherthread.

Image

The problem is:
As long as the mirror doesn't require registration and logging in AND it can't verify xkcd passwords it can't know if you are a spambot.

Of course if the bot doesn't use a valid username and password (and it won't) the post will not be able to be delivered to the real OTT.
But that's still bad.
Especially if the spambot accidentally uses a valid xkcd username. Which is likely because words. If bothasar_p can't deliver the message to the OTT because of wrong password, he will send a PM to the user, so that the post is not lost. Today I had 5 (luckily, unreceived) spam PMs in my outbox. I removed them.

What to do?

These spambots try to put some spam in the message and fill rest of the fields with randomness.

Now when posting to the Mustardtime Otherthread you'll notice a "Leave this empty" which should be left empty, otherwise you can't post.
The spambots will put some text there and fail.

My bots who use the mirror will work like they did before, completely ignoring the "Leave this empty" field, so the compatibility is not broken.

I'll upload the updated code soon.

Evil spambots! Way to combat them, balthasar. BTW, I forgot to tell you that when my sweetie and I were in Pittsburgh, we had lunch at a Polish deli. He wanted to try some iconic Pittsburgh food, but other than a sandwich from Primanti Bros., or chipped ham, the only thing I could think of were pierogies. In fact, the Pittsburgh Pirates have a [urlhttp://sdpolishdeli.com/sdpolishdeli/]pierogi race at the end of the 5th inning[/url], which we got to witness in person and it was hilarious. So, we went here. And I thought of you. :)

jovialbard, yes, the basement is scary! Don't go there! Stay here in the light!

Aluisio, that was a creepy dream. Although, when you were talking about zooming in on a map of the continent with b'ack dots all over, my first thought was of the Not AnOTTer map, and the way the icons merge and separate. That doesn't seem scary at all.

I'm hoping to win the lottery so I can stay in bed till noon AND not sink into debt. I actually bought a ticket yesterday, which I don't do very often. I was just in the mood. Who knows, I could be a millionaire right now!

Double plural! "pierogi" is already plural in Polish. by adding the -es they became even more plural.
This works the other way too. English plural words ending with -s don't sound plural in Polish so an -y (or -i) is added. I was helping with making pierogi(es(es(...))) recently.

Wait, so did you dream about something that actually happened, but you didn't know it happened? Or was it something you knew about but had forgotten? Like, are you psychic?

No, I dreamed about some things.
Then I woke up, but not really. I only dreamed of waking up.
Still inside the dream she said that it was all true.
That's when I got really scared.
So much that actually woke up a few moments later.
