'TMI' he whispered, gazing into the sea.

So... the sum total of all information is too much information? Is that the joke? There's just too much information out there?

More like too much information bombarding our brains, now that we have always-available internet access.

Is there some sort of awareness week? Dilbert had the same theme lately.

One could argue that there is always too much information around us, which is kinda scary.

Why of course, we are indeed bombarded with too much information. Which is why I use an ad blocker and a PVR that can skip ads.. :twisted:

I don't get it. What's he doing viewing the Episcopal School of Texas ?

Or is he looking at TowardsMaximumIndependence ?

I sure can't imagine why he'd be upset about a Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's (TRMM) Microwave Imager...

Is there really Too Much Information, or not enough Time?

I tend to lean towards agreement with the members of the Setec Astronomy project, myself.

This is one of the most information-overloaded comics in recent history, too.

I cringe every time someone pronounces the abbreviation "TMI" (the same for other abbreviations like WTF). Even more so when said person is having a conversation in Dutch. :x

It might have to do with the fact I'm not used to a phrase like "you're presenting too much information" when someone is going too far; instead, the common phrase where I live is more like "stop right there" or "that's not what I wanted to hear". Or whizbang's citation above.

Yes, sorry. I tried fixing it (having quoted you AND thunderbird), but as it turns out, I left the wrong username in the quote. Fixing it right now.

isn't TMI more specifically used not for the amount of information, but more the content? like someone describing his latest toilet products or the like. things we really didn't want to hear.

TLA is a Three Letter Abbreviation. Most TLAs aren't acronyms, presumably because most pronouncable three letter sequences are already taken as words that are too common for an acronym to compete with, though there are notable exceptions like ISO.
Pedants will never win. We'll be too busy arguing with each other.

Iso, as in the Greek-derived prefix meaning "equal"?

I don't believe in an objective TMI. I used to be able to squelch unwanted questions when I called in sick to work by saying things like "I'll try to come in once I get the rectal bleeding to stop", but then I got a boss who was immune to such things.

Now, TMJ, on the other hand, that's truly nasty. Only had it once but it makes teeth superfluous.

This made me think of the song "Too Much Information" by the Police, which makes me think of the internet every time I hear it (and that amuses me because it was written before the world wide web existed, compared to now it doesn't seem like there could possibly have seemed to be too much information in 1981).

FFS, everybody is missing the most Oh me yarm thing about this comic, perhaps because the answer was so relatively benign: when someone says "Ugh, TMI," the last thing you want to do is ask them WTF prompted them to say that.

speising wrote:isn't TMI more specifically used not for the amount of information, but more the content? like someone describing his latest toilet products or the like. things we really didn't want to hear.

No.

FYI, the following are acceptable amounts of information:
1. "I got some toilet paper at the grocery store."
2. "We changed toilet paper brands"
3. "I prefer toilet paper brand x over brand y"

Here are even some plausible scenarios where you might encounter these sentences, respectively:
1. You asked your colleague why she took longer than normal to come back from her lunch break;
2. Visiting your retired parents, you noticed that the TP brand in the WC is different than the one they always had when you were growing up;
3. You're about to head home from a BBQ hosted by your buddy, and you've just used his washroom. As you shake hands and say see you next time to your host, you make a comment about the fancy-looking ~*~bathroom tissue~*~ you saw in there.

Take those sentences and add just a *little* more information. Expand at your peril:
Spoiler:
"I got some toilet paper at the grocery store because my new diet needs a lot more of it to clean up down there."
"We changed toilet paper brands because the old one was chafing your father's hemorrhoid."
"I prefer toilet paper brand x over brand y because brand x is thick enough that you don't have to wash your hand afterwards."
TMI, QED.

I'm quite certain the quote you responded to was not referencing toilet paper with the line "toilet products."
