It's all about the foot-rockets.

I wouldn't mind the crispy calves as much as the incinerated buttocks. Roasted marshmallows -- NOT.

"Calf Shield" and my first thought is, is that something used in the production of veal?

Besides, I saw Sean Connery use a jetpack quite successfully back in the 60's. It's in the opening to Thunderball for you youngsters.

My thoughts were, "They'd better have flying cars and hoverboards ready for next year. And Pepsi Perfect". (though it better not be 50 bucks a bottle)

I think the important distinction here is "jet pack" vs "rocket pack".

Jet pack: Jets of gas/liquid ejected at high speeds to create lift

Rocket Pack: Combustion fuel (rocket fuel?) used to generate thrust similar to a rocket.

Jet Pack: Hard to control, but safe(ish). Not very high altitudes, <1 minute flight time .

Rocket Pack: Hard to control, not safe (see comic, and the "Rocketeer" movie), high altitudes, long flight times.

Jet Pack: Many have been developed and successfully used, though not mass produced.

Rocket Pack: We're not really looking at market applications right now.

There was a promising propeller pack project but its development was cut short.

"free medical care covering all my jetpack-related injuries"

I have that. I call it the NHS

Also,

Rocket Pack: Hard to control, not safe (see comic, and the "Rocketeer" movie), high altitudes, long flight times.
I think you've got these the wrong way round somewhat. At low speeds (and "low" here still covers speeds up to Mach 3 or higher) rockets are woefully fuel-inefficient compared to air-breathing jet engines, and thus a rocket pack would offer shorter flight times than other sorts of jet pack.

Screw hoverboards next year, I want my flying time-travelling DeLorean.

Then I'll have hoverboards back in 1985 when they would have been actually useful.

"my backpack got jets, I'm Bobba the Fett.'

The burning of the body is the second thing I think of, and one chalks it up to just not thinking about it. The first is simple fuel consumption. I think that my back would probably fall off it I used a jet pack.

That could make an interesting story. A cop working in a district where cops have a tendency of dying in the line of duty mere days before retirement decides to investigate that improbable pattern and uncovers a far-reaching conspiracy to save the department from having to pay retirement benefits...

Cops with jetpacks?

Also, if anyone follows that link they will be Lured into a Trap and may find themselves having to try and Escape from the Crazy Place but alas... it will be too late. They'll be Lost at Sea. For TVTropes is nought but a Hopeless Boss Fight, as #609 warns us.

Those who have managed to escape TVtropes before no longer need to even follow the links back to it; just hover over it, see that it goes to the TVtropes article by that name, and remember "oh yeah, that trope".

But TVTropes is edited and changed so frequently, it doesn't take much to get sucked back in!

I'm sure it won't be long before I Want My Jet Pack is updated to include a mention of this week's title-text.
