Has anyone ever tried this before?
No one has landed on a comet before.

Three hours to separation.
Three hours until the separation of Rosetta and Philae.

Here's what I got so far:
-There's a script on the page. Here it is beautified: ghostbin . com/paste/v8eeb
-The page does not work over SSL. (sad)
-If you go to xkcd . com/#verbose it will display the time remaining until the next image in you browser's console.
-The delay is random(?)
-Opening the image in a hex editor show's it is padded with extra ?s

PS: Are the spam filters always this rough?

Hello everybody. Just made this account to post this so I don't know if there's some etiquette that I'm missing or anything. Anyways!

I don't know what this Rosetta thing is, but if this comic is related to it then I think he might be posting these comics live. As in, he may be doing live commentary on this Rosetta thing which he's stayed up to experience. That's my first impression when he says "Has anyone tried this before? I don't think so." Just a guess though.

Given that the stream is called "comic/landing", this is highly plausible.

The small line is not a single color, and grew from 4 pixels to 5, and now more.

(Also, new here -- same as @Renground. Hello!)

The black line thingie is zooming in. I think it's a satellite with two big solar panel array thingies. (Yes, "solar panel array thingies. I'm not a space engineer buildy dude.)

The black line thing is a different shape! It's either a Philae-eye-view of the comet, or a comet-eye-view of Philae.

That agrees with the Rosetta theory:

Probably just to prevent the server from being hammered every time there's a new image... whenever a new image goes up, it waits a random time (up to a minute) before showing it, to stagger out the hits to the server.

8BitAce wrote:PS: Are the spam filters always this rough?

Only on your first couple of posts. New users aren't technically supposed to post links... I've allowed your post because the cleaned JS is probably going to be quite useful to the thread (and the link to xkcd itself is obviously not spam...).

Straight horizontal line with a vertical bulge in the center... yeah, looks quite a bit like Rosetta. Put me in the "comet's-eye-view" camp.

EDIT: Update! We can now see the panel array and the dish on top! It's the space probe, all right:

At first when I saw it, it was the squiggly line frame. I thought it was text we had to zoom in on using browser trickery. Then it updated.

Say, did anyone notice the javascript? /s

Also, I've got a zoomier one:

Is someone saving all of the individual hashes? We don't need to post every image here (and probably shouldn't, for the server's sake), but it might be good to have them for posterity.

ETA: Found a post in which someone's storing them all on the first page. Kudos to you, eidako!

Is that Rosetta? It looks like her, but I was thrown off for bit. She has much shorter hair in this comic.

If I had to guess. It is the view from 67P, as Rosetta approaches and sends it's UFO to the inhabitants of the comet.

I wonder if Randall is drawing these live by hand? That seems a tad ambitious once things are close enough to have much detail in each frame.

Unless you plan to sleep for 10 hours, you should be able to catch the landing. I think it's supposed to be about 7hrs after separation.
