They addressed this in one of the press briefings. They said it was a political hurdle they could not cross.

Urgh, if it was an engineering problem I'd be okay with it, but politics, blargh!

Pu-238 is the main isotope used for RTG's and nobody's making it; the US and Russia are running low (apparently NASA get there's from the Russians) and the ESA probably doesn't have easy access to any.
And Philae's expected mission duration is short; is it worth the effort of using such a heavy power source (aren't they around 50kg or something?) when it's not going to actively be used for long?
(Not to mention some people were upset with the Cassini launch due to its use of an RTG, but let's ignore them).

peregrine_crow wrote:So why don't they do a full test of all crucial systems inside a vacuum chamber before sending it on a decade long mission? Just to make sure something like this doesn't happen ten years down the line.

Do we not have vacuum chambers that large (I have no idea how large Philea is, but it can't be that big, right)?

The lander is 1 x 1 x 0.8 m and weighs about 100kg.
But probably nobody thought it necessary; the chemistry looked fine and you do get a reaction when you try to burn nitrocellulose in vacuum (it just doesn't explode).

I know there's no "up" or "down" in space, but does it bother anyone else that the Earth is thinking downwards? Thoughts are presumably felt to be lighter than air and hence normally float above their thinker.

I'm finally seeing the new frame (new comic? newpix?) on my end as well. I think the thought bubbles don't bother me because they're in space. Given the angle it's drawn at, it almost looks like a 3D forced perspective picture. Perhaps with Earth sending thoughts of thinking of Philae out to Rosetta, to cheer her up after losing contact with her traveling companion?

Title text is still "LIVE". Philae doesn't have much to say as he's currently hibernating, and Rosetta probably only will be checking in every day or week or so, seeing as she's orbiting the comet for quite a while now. So they could still be real time.

So looks like we'll have to
Spoiler:
keep checking back for more updates. I'm pretty sure Wait For It should be saved for the OTT.

Or they drank because that's what xkcd told them they should be doing.

Yay, another frame. I suggest we try to confirm that these are released midnight EST. That's about an hour from now.

Hm so the pages the img url should be fetched from just give me "Stream does not currently exist." at the moment.

EDIT: The https versions, that is, the http versions just time out.

If there IS a new frame, could someone post it here, please? It's not loading for me; all I get is a white square.

Well, it's past 12:00AM EST (I'm in Germany this week, so post-comatose) and I'm also getting the White Frame. So maybe it changed at 12:00AM but no one posted it to this thread yet. (And I'm not sure I'm qualified. I tried open image in new page and got a static link to ???.png which doesn't have the form of others posted here.)

Has anyone here suggested reaching out to mscha or someone who has the newpixbot source to create a version for this comic and thread... just in case? I'm a bit concerned that xkcd1446.org doesn't have the new frame, if it is a new frame.

xkcd1446.org doesn't have any of the new frames. It stopped collecting them when the live event was over, so it's missed all of the once-per-day updates.

And as far as I know, mscha is currently AWOL. OTTers haven't managed to contact him recently. But you're right, his newpixbot would be ideal for this.

Would it work the same? Time was 301/302 based (server redirects) while this one appears to only be JavaScript based. Usually bots don't work with JS.

I've also been getting only white frames since several days. I saw none of the "new" frames on the site. :(

What do you suppose the purpose of the zooming out is, spacewhales aside?

I'm hoping for a future picture in the style of the famous Cassini photograph with the earth as a distant pixel in the background, the comet in the foreground, and a giant flock of spacewhales heading for the former.

What about explain xkcd? They also stopped collecting the daily pictures, but I think it would be easy to expand their article, mentioning that there are new pics, and adding them to their existing list.

Do you like this style of Philae better, or the style I've had in the previous pictures (i.e. more detailed and with a face)? x3

(so that I don't break the thread like I nearly did)

My answer is a bit late, but I just wanted to say that I like this picture. Philae reminds me of the cartoons ESA made to introduce the Rosetta mission to little kids. I don't know if you've seen them (somebody already put a link to one of the videos in this thread--though, don't ask me where), but if you haven't, you should take a look. Even if they are primarily directed at kids, I still found them entertaining, and really cute :)

Being a wiki, yes, we could update it ourselves. I still find it sad that no one [regularly] there is still checking on it. Thank davean for us! ^_^

BTW, it's still at frame 151 (unless my connection just won't give me a newer one).

Maybe it'll eventually zoom out to include Rosetta in the picture too, and then what... xD

I've seen them ^_^ the "are we there yet" one was absolutely heart-meltingly cute x3
I'm still demanding a little Philae plushie from wherever. I just want to hug the damn adorable thing x3
I'm making a tiny foldable. But that's not enough! I do hope that if they do make a plushie, that it is anthropomorphized. Which would make it a he. And he needs to come along with a Rosetta. I did dream of Philae for a while. But last night's dream was... I don't even know how to explain it. It went back to my normal wtf dreams. As much as I like these dreams, I want more Philae dreams x3

On a Philae-related note, I bought fabric and I'm going to make a giant plushie and a mini-plushie. There's also a paper Philae next to me. So many little model Philaes all around me. I made a Philae t-shirt with a rather crappy drawing (I hardly had any time to work on the image) of Philae on it. Just to name a few things. I can't get enough of Philae. I wuv him too much!
