1663: Garden

(Don't think I can embed this one, let me know if I've goofed it, but it doesn't look like it's possible.)

Title Text: Relax.

Oddly enough, it's making me quite tense. What does it mean?

I've been playing with it for the past few minutes, and apart from mixing colours together, I haven't had anything grow.

Maybe I'm just a terrible gardener.

I can only presume you're meant to muck around with the lighting and wait until something grows. Although, I hit refresh, and now it doesn't seem to get past the spinning tree screen - a loading screen of some sort?

Refreshing may/may not help.

I'm guessing it might be getting hammered with traffic right now.

What I've figured out so far:
  • There's a spinning tree
  • After a while, the spinning tree disappears and there's a landscape with a few lights (I've seen either one or two, I've heard someone say they've got three.
  • You can change the position, direction, beam width, and color of the lights.
  • You're supposed to be able to add and delete lights. For me, this doesn't work. This might have to do with the console error I've got: "Failed to load resource: net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED http://linden.xkcd.com/run/16875630-fa4 ... 010a8e0003".

On one refresh I actually got a tree in the garden. It didn't seem to be doing anything other than just sitting there, though.

All I have is a spinning tree.

Not that I'm complaining about a spinning tree. I'm sure it says all sorts of interesting artistic things about ecology and what you find online. But I'm intrigued about what more there may be behind it...

Someone on the xkcd subreddit suggested everyone is growing an individual garden: here

A light went on in IE! (Edge and chrome are still showing the spinning tree...)

*edit*

And in Edge now too! But in Edge I cannod add or remove lamps.
In IE and I can add lights and remove lights.
In both IE and Edge I can edit the ligths: change direction and beam widht, and hue.

The ground is the same in my two browsers, the tree is in a different place though...

*edit*

IE just reverted to a spinning tree.

I know it's supposed to be a spinning tree. And yet it looks to me like the angry head of something that's glaring at me and shaking its head...

The spinning tree is indeed just a loading screen and not the comic in itself. And after that I get most of what rchard2scout mentions, a landscape and one lamp that I can change in different ways, but I cannot add or delete a lamp.

Looks like the comic fails to load because it includes a script via `http`, while the page is hosted via https (https://xkcd.com//).

The comic fails to load for me because its script it loaded via http, but the page itself is hosted via https, so the browser blocks it (due to insecure mixed content):

The server's taking quite a while to reply, on the order of a minute - it's obviously overwhelmed. The browser is POSTing state information every time you make a change, but the replies don't seem to be anything beyond an echo of what's sent.

What are other people getting in their URL's? I've got #6cfe64d0-fa41-11e5-8001-42010a8e0003 at the end of mine.

Maybe he should be using IIS. This LAMP setup's getting mixed results.

I can add up to 2 (total of 3) lamps, but need to refresh after each addition to actually see them. Lamps seem to jump around now and then.

By the way, a rabbit appeared in my garden. Let's see if I can grow him some carrots...

Edit: oops, two rabbits now.. I can see where this is going..

Edit 2: is it just me or is the tree slightly wobbling?

Opera loaded, but nothing of note is happening. Can't add more lamps... Pale Moon is still spinning.

The lamps do appear if you wait long enough, it seems. I have a cactus, and that's about it. I'll fetch the Tequila.

@FLUKILUKE, I'm getting a different GUID for each browser session.

In Chrome, adding lights didn's seem to work. However, I now suddenly have three lights. But no tree anymore. The UI may just be slow...

Until now, the maximum number of lights I've been able to get were three. I'm trying shining in each direction (including up...)

Pale Moon DOES sometimes work, I use it myself and have been able to get to the garden, and even once got to add lamps.

I find it odd how sometimes the Loading... text is there, and sometimes it's not. It could be the server being slammed, but I think it might be the algorithm generating the ID that sometimes takes a long time generating the next ID.

I've noticed that it's only really the first segment, the two digits in the second segment, and the last digit in the fifth segment that change. The rest has been the same every time I've gotten a new garden.

I just tried on a different device: the first 8 bytes of the hash are completely different, but the rest of it is nearly identical; the second and last parts (in terms of the digits being separated by dashes) have been incremented by a few though.

Now look here, Garden. I'm relaxing as hard as I can, and spinning that tree in my face is not going to improve that.

A birdbath just appeared in mine. o_O And here I thought birdbaths were manmade, not a nature phenomenon.

And while I was writing this, a platform too.

Interesting, I have the same features.

Edit: And now the woman from http://xkcd.com/440/ panel 3 has appeared too.

Then your next feature should be a deer, which I had when I looked just now. And another birdbath on top of the platform after that.

Nothing yet, but at least it stopped spinning. Poor tree was getting dizzy.

Umm...so to sum up, a birdbath, a platform, a deer, another birdbath, a tiny tree to the left, and then one next to the deer, and finally a third birdbath next to the first. And then the Loading... screen shows, and the garden resets. :( Without me refreshing.

Stop lording it up with your fancy garden objects! I literally have a tuft of grass grown. It's not even tidy.

@ThemePark: Either save the hash when you have it, or just try hitting the back button in your browser. That saved my garden twice now.

Well, since we're posting screenshots now:ImageThe rest of it seems reasonable enough, but I'm at a loss to explain the platform. It's like... some kind of watchtower, or a diving board.

Right you are, the back button did indeed work, previous experiments had just led me to believe that a garden was reset upon refresh.

pduthie, sorry, but if it makes you happy, I only got a tuft of grass in my new garden. And a bird bath again. I'm beginning to suspect the beginning of a Hitchcock movie here... And another tuft of grass. They're not easy to spot.

Numendil, I'll see your desk chair and raise you something very weird.

It's giving those hindquarters a good soak, obviously. Helps relieve the tension.

In other news, it seems things have stopped materialising in my garden here. I guess I can always try another and come back to this one later.
