I got a couple of trees and some rushes, then it reset. Second time I got rushes, a cactus, rushes, a desk and Blonde With Ponytail. I have turned all three lights into lasers aimed at her head. This seems to have made no difference to anything.
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.

It looks like the octopus is holding a crow bar, but it's just the cactus playing tricks

I have AdBlock enabled and Pale Moon (which usually means websites won't work as intended) so I doubt the issue lies in that.

Other than that, I just put all 3 lamps on top, spaced out about evenly and with the maximum light "width", and that makes things grow for me.

As for the list, I have gardens that use just one colour, so I can say that yellow makes birds, turtles and vines/octopus arms, blue makes octopii and only octopii, red makes cactii and turtles, and white has made platforms, trees, grass, deer, ducks, pots, birdbaths and reeds. But there's some things I have yet to see, like obelisks, and the characters.

Are you all using this link, provided in a much earlier comment? http://linden.xkcd.com/

I'm using that in Chrome with no apparent problems.

I missed that. I have a small tree now in FF. Well, it's something. That's it. :( Chrome looks the same, i.e. a single tree. Barren otherwise.

Well, I can debunk the idea that nothing shows up while you watch; an octopus showed up while I was looking at it just a bit ago.

I'm really hoping someone comes up with a list of all of the things that are creatable, and what combination is needed to get them (color, position of light, angle, intensity, whatnot)... :o

There's some text up above the title and I think it's changed since last I saw it:

Protip: If you don't like how your garden is growing, you can click to prune it.
You can copy the URL to share your garden. From other browsers, it will be view-only.

That's useful to know. I grew my obelisk with a combination of blue and greenish light, and Ponytail appeared with some combo of blue and yellow. Megan with arms raised came from an intersection of blue, green, and yellow. Interestingly enough, Megan with the sword actually grew out of the desk: when I click on the desk Megan is also selected, the same way all branches are selected when you click on a big tree.

I think that happens so that if you delete a platform or other object that something else is standing on, it deletes that as well. It doesn't want to allow you to have a levitating Megan, as fun as that sounds.

This whole thing reminds me of the early discussions on the Time comic during the sandcastle building period, before the story and mechanism of creation more well-established, when lots of people were postulating that perhaps it was all being built created by some sort of algorithm that randomly was generating the sandcastle a little at a time. Someone even pulled off a proof of concept if I remember correctly, that showed it could be done. This seems like Randall took that idea (which, of course, proved to be false for that comic) and actually made it a reality--a computer generated growing landscape.
In Svithjod, there stands a rock. It is 100 miles high and 100 miles wide. Once every 1000 years a little bird comes to this rock to sharpen its beak. One time, I changed just the last sentence of this signature, and lots of you noticed. Image

It appears to (somewhat slowly) grow weeds and things from time to time.

They demonstrate a degree of phototropism. One little bush that popped up for me was bent towards my lights... when I moved them to the opposite side, the poor thing spent about 10 minutes trying to bend over the opposite way... and then it all went "poof" and started over.

Yeah, I agree that's part of it. But I think it's also true that in this case Megan:Desk is the same as Branch:Tree. In other words, if I hadn't shone a yellow (I think) spotlight on top of the desk, Megan would not have sprouted.

Oh yeah, I remember that. A sandcastle-generator. (If we had a forum search I would try and find it in the OTT.)

Given that it's saying to relax, I'm considering that it looks at how frequently you look at the page to generate things? I left it alone for a while and got some stuff, but now that I've been checking it every thirty seconds for half an hour it's stopped generating things.

Well, it seems that they aren't going to let me show you my garden today. :/ Some things I have is:

Three octopuses, one with a hat that looks like he is waving goodbye to his family, as he heads for work at a desk with a rabbit on top of it.

I have a balloon attached to a tiny cactus blowing in the wind.

I have a small cat stalking a small tree, with a turtle poking in to see what is going on.

I have 3 blond girls, one standing on a desk, and the other two standing together, all watching the octopus scene.

There is also a short haired girl with a bird on her head watching the octopuses.

In the swordMegan garden: Creating a desk seems to require a combination of blue and white light, since I just had another sprout. I'm going to shine some yellow light on this desk #2 and see if I can reproduce swordMegan. I also finally got a Cueball but he isn't doing anything interesting.

In the Obelisk garden: I've extracted the accidental cactus from Megan but now she's holding something?

I tried that though I don't see anything that looks like green, but it didn't work. I did get a cat though, actually the cat in your latest post. And I'll add to my previous colour list, for some odd reason, after spawning 20 something octopii, Cueball has magically appeared in the all blue garden.

Oh. Well by "green" I sort of mean "midway between total blue and white" which is a less-saturated blue. Sort of the flip side of where the dot turns orange between yellow and red.

I just got a Cueball holding one hand up under a plain blue light. This is not boringCueball who lives in the swordMegan garden - it's a different pose.

I figured out what Megan's platform is for, thanks to orangish light. All hail Pixar!

Thanks for the link to linden.xkcd.com. I was getting the "Loading" tree forever and ever on Firefox and Chrome. Actually I had a bunch of stuff on Chrome, then it reset. Neither reloading nor the Back button could bring it back.

Now on FF, I have a couple of dead trees, I guess that's what those big sticks are, and a couple of nice little trees. I tried just shining a light in the air, but that doesn't seem to have done anything.

On Chrome, all I got was a rock.
