1815: "Flag"

Title text: "There's a compromise bill to keep the notification bar but at least charge the battery."

But does the notification bar auto-shift to the short side of the flag when hung vertically instead of flown horizontally?

And only 3G? Not a country I would want to live in!

That's not a bad flag. Little bit Costa Rican in its color scheme, which does also make it a little bit North Korean - the latter even has a star. Thailand is another with the stripes in red and blue with white between, although they have the red on the outsides rather than the inside. Belize does the same without any white, as does Cambodia. And then I guess it's also reminiscent of Cabo Verde, kind of. They have lots of little stars.

Randall's is the only one I saw with that color scheme done vertically, though.

It looks like the New York/California view of the USA, as a flag. Blue on the coasts, red in the middle, not to scale. Sort of like this classic New Yorker cover.

If this new nation goes isolationist, politically, does a little crescent-moon icon appear? And a little airplane if they really mean it?

What would the "alarm clock" icon mean?

Maybe the "batter charge" value should be the percent of the population that voted for the current Fearless/Glorious/Whatever Leader in the last election.

But does the notification bar auto-shift to the short side of the flag when hung vertically instead of flown horizontally?

If it doesn't, the battery clearly needs charging.

And only 3G? Not a country I would want to live in!

That symbol should display the kind of service that has the strongest signal and is accepting connections at the flag's location. That way, people walking around a public space like a plaza could look at the visible flags, and walk to one that shows a kind of service that their phone can use.

With all these features, we could then say that flags actually have some value to the population, rather than just declaring which ruling clique controls that chunk of the landscape.

We in the breakaway Democratic Republic Of* Southern Flagtopia (*And, Just Because It Says "Democratic Republic", It Doesn't Mean Our Government Is Hyper-Authoritarian Communist, Honest) wish to thoroughly distance ourselves from that unrepresentative Northernist flag, that reflects nothing of our own rich culture and heritage and independence of spirit and slavish adherence utter loyalty to the DROSFAJBISDRIDMOGIHACH and our own Radiant Leader.

In all international contexts (Olympics, Eurovision Song Contest, selfies featuring no fewer than two ducks in the act of photobombing) we demand that the following flag be used to differentiate our interests of the rogue Not South Flagtopian pigdogs:

I mean even with the top bar from the phone, it's not all that bad.

It's not a good design. Replace the center star with 50 stars. We are a nation composed of 50 little nations. Remove the outer stars and replace with other symbols, such as a snowflake and a dollar sign. The space above the stripes will be sold for advertising. Each flag can have a unique set of slogans. Twenty percent of the advertising revenue will go to the federal government and fund less important programs such as healthcare and education.

Doodling is not designing. The result of the design process should be a description of the flag's construction, a set of instructions which can be used to render or build the flag.

For example, if we use the width of the white bars as the unit:

Blue color: (insert color specification here)
Red color: (insert color specification here)
White color: Safe
Hoist: 9 units
Fly: 14 units
Hoist of the blue and red bars: 4 units
Hoist of the white bars: 1 unit
Height of the isosceles triangle that makes each one of the five points of the star: 1 unit
Distance between top of the flag and top of each star: 3 units

I might be wrong about the last one, but it seems that the star is neither centered vertically or inscribed in a circle that's vertically centered.

What I want to know is what the flag manufacture process is - is it all printed now, or do they still stitch together different coloured fabrics?

Those white walls show some respect for heraldic tradition, in which you're not supposed to put color next to color, or metal next to metal, as the UK went to great trouble to maintain when they added the saltire of St Patrick to the previous Union Jack. Russia's current flag egregiously violates that principle.

Whizbang is from the USA, so three out of fifty, apparently. Pretty harsh. It would be better to be rated a three by someone from Australia (3/6) or Micronesia (3/4).

Still better than Morocco; a rating of three out of a possible one is hard to figure out.

I don't see another flag with three stars, so it can't be a perfect rating. There is one with three diamonds: St. Vincent and the Grenadines (who opened for Jimmy Buffett in '96, heck of a show). But I'm not sure if stars outrank diamonds... I assume clovers are the most important, given that Lucky is a leprechaun...

How about we allow the stars to be dynamically changed? Perhaps different emojis to reflect the latest tweets by our Fearless Leader1. Or one emoji for the tweets, one for a reply by the opposition, and the last for ... not sure... maybe the stock market movement... foreign reaction... what the Pope thinks of it... something like that.

At least that makes mathematical sense. Imagine if soemone from a zero-star-flag country gave it three stars.

You can get both. Stitched: http://www.flags.com/American-flag/
Fully dyed (so the dye goes all the way through): http://www.allflagsetc.com/catalog/prod ... egory/160/
I was surprised that it doesn't even make a difference in price -- not that I looked very hard to find bargains. :)

The time zone is dynamic, it is GMT+(17:48-GMT). To always have 5:48 PM local time.

... And I was wrong about that last one. The stars ARE centered in each field, but the flag's proportion is 8:5, not 14:9.

The following is a proposed construction sheet for the flag:

Admittedly, I could have reduced that to 5 : 7, but that would have made the significance of that ratio even more obscure.

The bar at the top from the phone, he meant. I would assume that bit is important due to it literally being the point of the comic, and what makes the flag so unique. It'd be downright cruel to ignore it, you know?
