So, err, was the chat enabled previously? Because all the livestreams I see now have it disabled.
I can't read. It says "... that they don't enable chat", not that Randall has hidden it.

That said, you probably wouldn't see such messages with less than 1000 viewers, most of them being interested in marine biology or at least aware that "ocean" and "pacific basin" mean it's about real underwater things.

Now where are all the fish? I bet this is all staged in a swimming pool.

When Twitch did that Cosmos livestream, it was like literally exactly this. I could only handle about five minutes of it. = /

I'd wager Randall stepped in for a bit as well!

Never seen it, but I can well believe it. After all, this comic is essentially an update of #202 (not a bad thing) which is not exaggerated in the slightest. I tend to see intelligent comments mainly on web pages that have no pictures at all, let alone videos.

Though I should check it out -- and I LOL'd, of course. That's gotta be one of the longest-lasting of the InterWeb's memes. I also noticed the "312,618,652 views" comment. And it's not at all the only copy of Rick's video on youtube. I wonder if anyone even comes within an order of magnitude of his, uh, "success". And could the youtube folks even tell us the total view counts for all the posted copies of this song? ;-)

During the 2012 London Olympics, I didn't want to wait for the US networks to broadcast the opening ceremony, so I went online to find an unofficial live stream. I found it on one of those sketchy ad- and malware-ridden sites that embed pirated TV show episodes, but this particular site seemed to specialize in live streams, and it happened to have a live chat feature.

The chat, of course, was populated by the rather odd sort of people who want to watch a pirated live stream of the Olympic opening ceremony. It was by far the most entertaining part of the experience.

Pre-immersion, sure.

Post-immersion? Possibly...? Maybe?

I know Gangnam style was the highest viewcount for a while, but I'm not sure if it still holds the record. It's currently sitting at about 2.8 billion views.

Unfortunately, the billion views club is full of (unironically viewed) music videos.
Rick probably doesn't come close even taking the views on deleted and misnamed videos into account. (Also, the second time around you close the video within 5 seconds, so it doesn't count for an extra view.)

There was no US tv station broadcasting the Olympics opening ceremony live?

I'm super happy Randall has introduced this to me. It is a great distraction. It's especially nice because I'm sick now, and have something to do.

Did anyone else watch the Google I/O keynote today? The part on YouTube live chat had something familiar about it:

No. NBC pays billions of dollars for the rights to not broadcast the Olympic Games. These non-broadcast rights are the IOC’s single greatest source of revenue.
