1959: "The Simpsons"

Postby Steve the Pocket » Fri Feb 23, 2018 7:35 am UTC

Image

Mouseover caption: In-universe, Bart Simpson and Harry Potter were the same age in 1990. Bart is perpetually 10 years old because of a spell put on his town by someone trying to keep him from getting his Hogwarts letter.

I'm guessing this was inspired by that Ted Cruz statement that went viral yesterday. So to reword this slightly, if you were Bart's age when George H.W. Bush said America needs to be more like the Waltons than the Simpsons, you were about Homer's age when one of his wannabe successors in the same party said being like the dumbest Simpson was a-OK.

Bart would attend Ilvermorny, not Hogwarts! Do your research, Randall. :P

This makes so much sense. Now I understand why we don't know which state the town is in, magic.

The thought of Bart Simpson, with the kind of resources that Fred and George had, both terrifies and slightly excites me.....

If you were Brian Griffin's age (7) during the first season of Family Guy, you would now be 26 and most probably dead (assuming you are a dog).

I realized that I was approaching Homer's age a while back. My response can be summed up in one word: (annoyed grunt).

This is probably somewhat more of a surprise to Randall, since he doesn't have kids (that I'm aware of). Seeing as how I have a 7 year old at home ... meh. Not much of a surprise.

I don't mind being the same age as Homer. It's being the same shape that depresses me. :)

The fact that we're getting another "look how old you are" strip is drawing attention to the fact that we're getting close to a "look how old the comic is" moment - some time this year the number of strips will catch up with the year.

Does the Simpsons ever admit to taking place in America?

Interesting that the first short from the Tracy Ulman Show in 1987 doesn't count, that's when I started watching them. Or the Christmas special on FOX that was in 1989 5 months before Season 1 started.

Hm. So are we all going to hope that "our comic" is extra-awesome?

C'mon, #1974! ...my parents' birthyear-comics were pretty ordinary.

...and Homer Simpson is a punk kid. "36-ish"?

...and if Sazae-san ever stops broadcasting (1969 – present), The Simpsons will only need a bit more than two decades to become the longest-running cartoon on TV!

Fun Fact: One of my parents' birth-years leads to the Calendar Facts diagram, by adopting your logic… Which is nice. (The other's is slightly disturbing, under the same logic. At least to me.)

Well, let's get two obvious jokes out of the way:

What are you talking about? Homer and Marge only even met in the 90s!

Hey, Lisa's old enough to try to succeed Trump as President!

More like 46.
