2052: "Stanislav Petrov Day"

Title Text: I was going to get you an alarm clock that occasionally goes off randomly in the middle of the night, but you can ignore it and go back to sleep and it's fine.

I was surprised to find no one had made a thread for today's comic. This is my first time. Did I do it right?

Anyway, I'd never heard of this guy until I Googled him just now and holy crap! It's amazing how close we came to the end of the world, just due to a false alarm! :o
I'm not really that patriotic... really!

Petrov’s actions demonstrate why we need to have a sensible person in the decision loop for anything important instead of leaving it to the computers.

Even though he stopped a (potential) global nuclear war, he was still reprimanded for not documenting his actions as they were happening. He was screwed either way, but at least his way, the Soviet military survived to see him leave for a research job.

It might be interesting to note that he may have only been about 4-years-old at the time, Bulgarian, and later gone on to have a career in soccer.

Took two hours after finding out who Stanislav Petrov is for the punch line to kick in. [I-am-thick-as-a-brick emoticon]

The movie WarGames was released in June 1983, several months before this incident.

The TV film "The Day After" was first shown Nov. 20, 1983. Were the two films "inspired" by President Ronald Reagan?

At sin valve. Prost!

Not press, avail TV.

(Yes, OP, looked like a good first first-post to me, but didn't have anything else to say at the time. This is barely an excuse, but it'll do.)

Hmm. That explains...basically all of twitter, really.
