Alt Text: Hey, when you're done draining the syrup, just leave the hole, okay?

I always thought the phrase was odd.

You don't extract SYRUP from trees; you extract SAP. You turn the sap *into* syrup!

This one made me laugh a lot. It reminds me of the whole "sweet-ass car to sweet ass-car" thing in its ability to become integrated into the readers' language.
A good pun is its own reword.

So...one person's syrup is another's "...that sticky crap is getting in the way of my hole!"?

Which kinda begs the question of gender in this case. Not that I'm partial; I'm just sayin'. I guess long hair on stick figures is the accepted connotation of "human female". Hmm; has there ever been an alien female on xkcd? Speaking of alien females, am I the only one who thought of Dick Cheney when I read the second panel?

Thanks, folks, I'll be here all week.

Cheers,

This kind of thing always makes me want come up with more and more, but Randall seems to have tapped all the major meanings of the word "tap."
A new one will come to me tomorrow during class, but only halfway, and I'll shout something like "I'd tap that ass and...wait, never mind. Goddamn it. Carry on."

Am I the only non-american who is puzzled by the American English 'ass'? Apparently it shares an etmology with the British English 'arse' -- do you have that word too? 'Ass' (in the American sense) is increasingly making its way across the duckpond but I don't remember having heard until relatively recently. It's amusing to hear people battle between 'ar' and 'aas' diphthongs.

And what do you colloquial call a donkey? Two countries divided by a common language indeed...

We just call it a donkey. Using "ass" to refer to it is old-fashioned over here, and only done at Christmas-time.

A donkey is indeed also an ass. I think the idea of changing arse to ass was solely to make grade school kids laugh whenever they come across the word as a donkey.

Interestingly, ass is almost always cut out by language filters where arse stays in. I guess it's a more acceptable term in the US, to go along with booty, behind, rear, and tush (sooo many synonyms to prevent old people from being offended whenever you want to refer to the part of your body that you sit on).

Can someone do me a favor and try to explain this comic? I only understood the second frame...

I'm not from an English speaking country, although I currently live in the USA.

I'm surely missing something...

"I'd tap that ass" means you'd be willing to have sex with them.
To tap a maple tree means to extract the sap to make syrup.
To tap someone for a job means to choose them for it.

jmorgan3 wrote:Did anybody else have to go to dictionary.com to understand the first panel?

No.

And that's interesting about "arse"; I've always known its meaning, but I always thought "ass" was natively cross-continental and "arse" was, like, a local euphemism or something. For what it's worth, though, "arse" is starting to be used over here too. Like, there's this one video game that's named Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal.

Donkeys don't really come up often enough in conversation for them to merit any colloquial Americanisms.

In re the alt text....

As if the sugar-tappers could...you know...take the hole away with them when they went?

In tapping trees, you just let the hole heal over, you don't plug it up.

It's amusing to hear people battle between 'ar' and 'aas' diphthongs.

And what do you colloquial call a donkey? Two countries divided by a common language indeed...

And now for the explanation...

The original term, indeed the original rude term, is "arse". But try pronouncing that with a stereotypical London/BBC British accent and listening to it with an American accent: get hear "ahss".

So what happened was that some early progenitors of American English, noticing the similarity in sound between the word for your tuchus and the word for donkey, started using the word for donkey as a polite euphemism for "arse". This caught on so well that it entirely supplanted "arse" as a rude word, and now that the two no longer sound alike when pronounced by an American we mostly forget how the meaning of one travelled to the other.

Also, if Randall had to fall back on a weak pun on the word "tap" without even managing a "Magic: the Gathering" reference, I worry for the future of XKCD. This comic wasn't actually that funny.

Dendrophilia, the new theme of xkcd?

Also, I'd like to note that Delicious Maple Syrup does not simply flow from Maple trees. Sap does. The sap needs to be collected and processed to become syrup.

I always thought of tap in the sense of the first panel as being an idiomatic metaphor -- the person is a resource being tapped to fulfill the need for a committee chair. In that sense, it is the same as the use in Magic.

Then again, I'm pretty sure the idea of wiretapping similarly began as a metaphor for tapping liquids such as sap or water supplies. My surety here is based on the fact that it seems internally consistent, makes sense to me, and the term would have been of no use until relatively recently; in short, it is not based on actual evidence :).

Which of tap (resource) and tap (specifically liquid resources) came first, and whether they are related, I am less sure of.

Unfamiliar with the meaning of "tap" in panel 1, I assumed that the stick figure was planning to sleep with someone powerful in order to be promoted to committee chair.
