Yeeeah, boy!

This is why I read xkcd.

There's nothing funnier than romance and the stinging barbs it leaves in its wake.

It's interesting how xkcd fluctuates between nerdy comedy and bittersweetness - though I'll admit you'll sometimes see the two together.

It does leave me wondering, though...how many of these sorts of comics are based on Randall's personal experience, and how many are just fancies?

well i dont know if you would say this comic is funny persay...
but i will say that comics such as these, which i assume are based on personal experience, do have a beauty to them, in that they give us an insight into the man himself.

For a picture that's 75% black pixels and featuring two stickpeople, that's some amazing artwork.

Ditto. Except the part where I'm making the toast. Or allowed within 500 meters of the Wedding.

Randall has found a way to shade stick figures and included a twisted romance...

heh well i guess i am not sure about that part yet... my ex has actually asked me to go (the wedding isn't official yet but seems inevitable) Of course it makes it all the more interesting when you take into account my deep loathing of her bf.

This reminds me of a part of a chapter I read in a book called "She's Not There." The author first talks about meeting a girl in Europe and spending the entire night together in much the same way as this comic sets it up, and then as he's describing the act of getting her a taxi and watching her drive off in pouring rain, he's simultaneously describing the rest of the relationship with her over the course of the following year. That kind of bittersweet memory is tough to read but at the same time very rewarding.

And I love the sting at the end, just enough to give it a comedic twist without taking anything away from the setup or resorting to cheap laughs. I mean, the Reimann-Zeta function giving someone herpes is hilarious, but it would have spoiled this one.
Obligatory self-promoting signature starts here.
Bristled - surprise, it's a comic.
Thank you for your understanding. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled end of my post.

I love these ones that are all sweet and touching until like the last line and then they hit you right in the nuts and spoil that good feeling you were getting. :-D

Oh really.

I appreciate the humor and perspective this brings as I run along a particularly parallel universe to this particular comic in this particular fragment of time.

I think I stopped breathing partway through reading it, it hits so close to the heart.

I hate (where, by "hate", i mean, "love") when xkcd messes up with our feelings like that :-)

It takes just two lines (the last ones) to change it from "sadness" to "lol", and then, like those optical illusions, the comic keeps going back and forth each other.

( or maybe it's just me ^^;; )

I loved this comic. Next time i am asked to do a toast at a wedding, this is what i'm going to say. But what kind of idiot would ask ME to do a toast at their wedding? That's just asking for trouble.

Yeah, and there is nothing like psycho girlfriend who you met this way knocking on your door for 5 hours straight to the point where you have to call the cops.

I want an experience like that. I'm not sure I want the whole marry my friend thing, I think maybe them disappearing and never seeing them again might be better. And probably less painful. Then again, start imagining yourself at an actual wedding, saying those actual words.

The text starts off in first person and then suddenly jumps to second person.

Anyone care to explain what the heck is going on there?

Oh wow.

I read it, thinking throughout that this was the deepest and most relevant tragic xkcd to me so far, and then the last line... I laughed. Then I looked back at the rest and found that it hadn't lost any of its own quality.

Fucking brilliant.

So, been hanging out with Fred Gallagher a bit too much lately, eh? Because the angst is tangible in this one. I'd say I could cut it with a knife, but it's too thick for that. Maybe a band saw, or a wood splitter.

Every so often, I find myself struck by the visual art in xkcd-- and not only the breathtaking and unexpected landscapes Randall throws in every once in a while. Yes, it's a stick figure comic, but Randall manages to do some pretty stunning things with said stick figures. Like here. The shading in this one, simple and minimalistic as it is, is gorgeous. Maybe because it's so simple and minimalistic.

Anyway.

Another one of those comics that show the deeper, more reflective side of xkcd. I love it. I'd opt for an addition to the thumbnails at the bottom. I'd also add for a reevaluation of the bottom thumbnails. Don't get me wrong, they're great comics, and come pretty close to defining xkcd in five strips, but I wonder if that couldn't be achieved with another set of strips as well.

But, alas, I digress. Again.

The point is that I like the comic, and that I obviously can't stick to one topic very long.

The speaker goes from telling his own story to talking directly to Megan's husband.

He's telling a story as part of a toast. People jump from first to second person in conversation all the time. It's not like it's a novel, it's a comic for chrissakes.

This comic reminds me why I'm glad my ex isn't coming to my wedding.

Instant favorite. This is going in my "recruiting people to XKCD" list of comics.

Absolutely love it. It tugs on heartstrings, only to realize too late that the song he's playing with your soul is a Rick Roll.

Edit: This also reminds me of the movie Love Actually.

Alternative Alt Text:
"Then again, that's what married people invented affairs for..."

Again I'm amazed at how often this comic catches my current mood and thoughts, so finally I registered :).

Back on topic:
Alas, the problem with meeting all those strangers is, that in the end, you want to meet Megan again, so no matter how you turn it, her husband always wins.
At least until you finally meet someone to replace Megan (who then marries that other guy asking you to be their best man ).

*sigh* Well, what would life be without someone unattainable to long for ;)?

wow...

This hits too close to home for me but... Wow. I feel unnaturally depressed in kinda positive way...

That aside, drawing and shading stick figures like that is worth one more Wow.
