This really reminds me of a song - "Our Mutual Friend" by the Divine Comedy - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MEixi67WjTA. Listen to the words.

Absolutely fantastic comic. XKCD at its bittersweet best.

See, It's pretty sad that we *hardly* will marry the people we most loved in our life. Love is like a lemming: goes straight and forward. But nobody knows where it will land.

Anyway, best toast ever.

I've been reading this forum for a while, and the webcomic as well, of course, and loving it. This comic got me to finally get off my lazy...chair, and sign up for the forum.

I had something extremely similar to this happen to me, just a little more than a year ago, with a girl at a national debate tournament. After that week, we went to our respective homes, and now we're 6100 kilometers away. Still I find myself reminded occasionally.

Just going to add my congratulations for this comic. We've had a fair few nerdy comics lately, and while I do like them, I like these comics just as much, if not more sometimes.

I have experienced something along these lines, and since we're still friends, I might be invited to the wedding if it happens. I wouldn't do anything like this though. Love is important, but so is letting go.

This is one of the best comics for ages. Sensitive, moving... then twists it up and makes you laugh out loud. Though I laughed at the penultimate line, not the final one.

And having laughed at it, I now understand why my brother doesn't want me to be his best man when he gets married. No, there's nothing like this there, it's that I would probably say something just as inappropriate.
Please note that despite the lovely avatar Sungura gave me, I am not a medical doctor.

Possibly my proudest moment on the fora.

I actually read this comic differently, as sort of two different speakers. As in, the beginning *is* the husband's story, and then narrator/Randall tells him he(husband) will never experience that again, but it's a small price to pay for being married. The narrator's jealous (he hopes it stings) because he hasn't even had the option.

But... Megan *is* the ubiquitous girlfriend name on here... and it does seem like Randall to ruin a nice moment.

I dunno. I like to think of the happier interpretation.

Been there... more or less. Perfect girl, perfect full-moon night-sky, perfect empty beach. She ended up with a m$%#@rf$%$@&g friend of mine. They lived happily ever after, and I ended up the sour and bitter House-like guy I am

I wonder if this is part of the reason I wasn't asked to do a toast at my friend's wedding. It was especially awkward when the bride's father told me I should have been the one up there instead. I still can't believe someone would say that at their own daughter's wedding. On the plus side, it got me motivated to make more of myself instead of settling for where I was in life. Bittersweet is certainly the word.

Well, at least the loves that come before can build bridges and dig (and explode!), so that the loves that come later have a better chance at succeeding. :D

It is kind of weird when you think about it, though. The person that I will eventually want to spend the rest of my life with - assuming I meet such a person - will be someone who I will know for such a brief period of time, compared to everyone else in my life. Family, friends, even ex-lovers will have had more of a history with me than that special person. And yet, in time, they'll come to be a larger part of my life than all the others. Pretty amazing, that love thing.

This strip has made me rather nostalgic. Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me a while back, except the marriage hasn't happened yet. We're all expecting it to, though.

Thoughts like this are detrimental to my current relationship.

Lovely artwork, though!

I'm still baffled by the timing of this comic, because just yesterday I whined to a friend about 'my Megan' and he told me that I should count myself lucky that I can still experience that sense of wonder when meeting someone special and falling in love with them.

And then, bam, xkcd drives the point home.

Spooky ;).

Actually, I've spent countless sleepless nights deliberating that question and I'm still not sure.

Then again, if you look at how her husband spent his sleepless nights, it's probably him I'd rather be *g*.

Sounds familiar... I wonder if I will be invited to my exe's wedding. I hang out with her every couple of weeks, but she refuses to let me meet her boyfriend for over a year. If I do end up going, I will probably give a toast whether I am asked to or not. This may be the reason she does not want me to meet her boyfriend and possibly a reason to not let me attend the wedding.

Great comic.

And add me to list of people who can empathize with the narrator.

It hurts to know that a person you talked to all night and watched the sunrise with is choosing to spend their life with someone else. Especially when that person is someone you despise for completely separate reasons.

Marriage fucks so much up.

Great comic, amazing artwork (how does he make stick figures look 3-D?)

I had a friend of mine give a best man speech for a girl he used to fancy. His line during the speech was: "If I am the 'Best Man', then why is she marrying him?"

I don't think anyone with much sense would go about posting this sort of thing to the world if it were too close to the truth.

This.
This one's an enjoyable comic if I assume it's not an author-surrogate speaking. If it is, ick, but I think xkcd's smarter than that, and creative people are creative, and a lot of good creative comes from playing what-if.

I am nearly-certain that this isn't an author surrogate.

For one thing, the last wedding I'm aware that randy spoke at, the toast didn't sound anything like this.

That happened to my dad. He didn't like the girl though, so it was okay in the long run. However, the girl had a son my age and for half of my childhood she kept trying to get us together. The son's a jerk, so that didn't happen either. But the girl and my dad have been happily married to other people for about 25 years. Maybe our grandkids will get together.
