lol I created an account just to comment on this comic. Every morning I'll wake up think about the dream I just woke up from and within minutes I've completely forgotten what it was about.

When people talk about their dreams I sit their wondering how they seem to remember them so vividly.

Ditto. I never remember the pleasant ones though (other than, something nice happened in that dream). I remember mundane ones though.

This is a perfect representation of how one's dreams fade away in the morning. I often spend 10-15 minutes trying in vain to remember them, only to recall tiny fragments.

My dreams usually aren't that interesting though, so it's not a big deal when I don't remember them.

This is usually me, except that it stops at about the second or third stage; I can remember odd details, but the majority fades away. Last last night there was something involving an open plan mall, and a fast food place, and a distinct lack of strawberry milkshake. It was a horrendously realistic one too.

Like the comic though, I can certainly relate.

I don't know the exact science behind it but I do know that moving right when you wake up disrupts the lingerings of REM dreams, so basically there is a higher chance of remembering your dream(s) if you remain still right when you wake up. Plus just concentrating on remembering helps too.

I read it as he was having a wonderful dream and woke up.. He was running to tell her about the dream but by the time the words came out he forgot the whole thing.. or the interesting parts, anyway.

That happens to me EVERY FREAKING TIME.

edit: I had a dream a while ago about a final exam which was on a Twinkee-sandwich medium, the questions were in the cream.. It was so livid I wish I could have filmed it and replayed it..

Wow, this is pretty much every morning of my life. I usually dream somewhat lucidly, so I always think within the dream, "Damn, this is so cool. Don't forget this!" and then after a few moments awake all I remember is that urge to remember along with the vague outline of what actually happened. Except that one dream with the T-rexes. That one I remember perfectly.

A very long time ago I had a dream where I was a scuba diver fighting a giant octopus. No, not a squid, an octopus. It's the only dream that I really remember having. All the rest have dropped off the stack, at some point.

I have two points to make.

1) have a pen and paper beside your bed and write down what you remember even before you're fully conscious.

2) Lucid dreaming is fun. If you even have the slightest suspicion that you are dreaming FIND A LIGHT SWITCH AND FLICK IT. Light switches CANNOT turn lights on or off in dreams. If you flick the switch and nothing happens, assume you are dreaming and realise that you are in a lucid dream. Then let the fun commence. Try flying, the higher you get, the higher your level of consciousness at that point (a lucid dream is a dream in which you are conscious). And be careful of "thinking" that you have woken up, usually you have descended further into the dream and end up no longer conscious. Lucid dreaming can be one of the most pleasurable experiences you've ever had. You can do whatever you like and there is no consequences!

I approve of this comic.

I tend to remember my dreams long enough to at least make some sort of riff on them that will last a while. I don't have zeppelins that often, though, which is disappointing.

Also, once, long before reading VOTDT, I actually did have a dream about a cup and a green hill that I couldn't remember (much of) afterwards. No tree or sword, though. This made it even more spooky to read the book -- it was sort of "C.S. Lewis, get out of my head!"

I'm regularly surprised by other people's experiences of dreams:

Dreaming in full sensory mode - colour, smell, taste, touch?
- Taking control of your dreams, and directing them (lucid dreaming)?
- Remembering 2 or 3 per night, in detail, every night?

I thought EVERYRONE did that!

Then I read this kind of thing, and realize I'm rare and very lucky. I have a full-immersion VR set in my head, every night. Mostly I let it run and marvel at where it takes me. Sometimes, if it starts to go bad, I take control and either stop it or move the story on (I never suffer nightmares.) If it's going especially well, I can extend it, subjectively, and revel in it (usually when I'm flying in a dream.)

Every morning I review what went on the night before, and laugh, maybe write the best bits down, then don't think of it again.

then i was trying to figure out what he meant by cup, sword, tree and green hills.

This is one of the best ones in a while I think. An idea that was VERY well executed.

I had a dream a few weeks ago where I was fighting a dragon with I giant Dwarven-style runed mace. Eventually I caught the dragon's head in the screen door to my balcony and smashed its skull repeatedly. It was fun as hell.

Poor dragon.

True, true. I do remember some of my dreams, but lately it's not been this so much as I don't recall ever having dreams at all, as if I didn't. And I don't recall feeling in the morning "That dream was awesome!", so either I don't have dreams those nights, or there's some sort of drilling nuclear buckshot in my mind.

But this used to happen to me! And I never bothered to get pen and paper anyway.
