Just had to congratulate this post. Even though I never saw the ad, this strip was very funny and gave me fuzzy feelings :D

Amazing!

Awesome meta-comic. Just what is that they're looking at on /b/ though?

I love this comic. It's the best XKCD I've seen in a long time -- scroll up the thread and see how many people are smiling now! :)

This made my day...

Also, I would just love to see this as a shirt...it has so much XKCD in one comic, I would buy a shirt of this in a heartbeat. Don't know if it is technically possible due to size, or colors, but damn this would be an awesome shirt.

I agree, this is a great comic. Not only is it a nice collection of wonderful past comics, but the commercial it's based on has been my favorite for the months I've seen it on tv.

For those who actually want more download-able media related to the discovery channel commercial, visit http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/world-is-just-awesome/promo.html (I post it because it took me a bit of digging to find it).

P.S. When We Left Earth is an awe-inspiring documentary

that would be kinda fun.

It's a shockingly simple chord sequence. I just need to find the key.

Just pick a key, it doesn't necessarily have to be the right one. (Concert Db)
Also, yeah the chord structure is extremely easy, it's basically a variation on I VI ii V7 repeat.

For a second, when reading this, I thought, "This absolutely sums up everything that xkcd is about. Nerdiness, a good joke, and a general love for life." Then I noticed that it was also satirizing the Discovery Channel and it got even better. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite comics so far.

I have to ask:

Was I the only one to sing the whole thing out loud, right now???

I would feel much better about myself....

Even if that were the case, I don't care!!!!

Boom de yada, boom de yada!

(Dang, it's stuck in my head...) ><

Crap, I feel cheated. If I would have seen the Discovery Channel ad before the comic, the comic would have been awesome.

Now, I just feel empty. And cold inside. I need a hug. Or a beer. Or both.

*hug* And don't worry, joplju, it's stuck in my head too. For much the same reasons. ;)

I learned the song at summer camp and always liked it. Discovery Channel made it even more awesome, and the xkcd version just broke the awesome-bank. Delightful!

I'd sing, gladly. Would a classically trained low soprano be useful?

I love XKCD! (boom de yada, boom de yada)

Ahh, like everyone else before me, all I can say is this has been one of my favorite strips in a long time. It cheered me up and made me feel way less tired and crappy, which I don't ever remember a webcomic doing before. :D
The only thing that could have made this more awesome would have been an appearance by Elaine Roberts.

dr7 wrote:Now, I just feel empty. And cold inside. I need a hug. Or a beer. Or both.

Well, I can't send you a beer over the internet, but I'll give you a hug if you want. *hug*

PS I could help with the song.

I would say "rules 1 and 2, toddler", but /b/ has been overrun by underage kids for a long time, and it's really a moot point (irony?) to even bring up the rules.

Sigh. This is the cancer, etc., etc.

The irony here isn't it being a moot point (that's a pun when it comes to 4chan).

The irony isn't even you breaking them too in your post.

The irony here is that you don't seem to understand those rules either and demonstrate it so clearly.

The rules 1 and 2 were never meant to be used like that. The point of them was for people not to mention 4chan during the myspace raids. Not to mention 4chan, not to mention /b/, not to mention anonymous, not to mention things everyone can recognize them from... Just go there, raid and leave without the target ever knowing why that happened or who did it.

Most certainly they weren't meant to keep people from knowing that 4chan exists. It started out as a community of anime fans. It was always supposed to get as much people as possible - that's why the guro board was removed so early (it could have kept some potential, softer users away).

And really, now that all raids are ruined by people who shout "We are anonymous! We do not forgive!" thus telling who they are, those points are very moot. Not that it matters as these days everyone knows 4chan (it gets visited as much as xkcd... and whitehouse.gov added to it together).

Just a little rant.

i've been wondering for the past few minutes how that even happened...

Like everyone else I was stunned by the awesomeness of this comic. I'm having trouble finding anything to discuss. Except, I'm glad that there are some new jokes (I love transistors), otherwise it could be seen as lacklustre effort.

As to the Discovery Channel ad, I'm saddened that we don't have that ad in Aus. (Plus Jamie and Adam reminded me of their appearance in CSI).

Me too.

And your suggestion gave me one of my brain's trademarked tangents to the idea that a "periodic table of the xkcdian elements" should be created.

EDIT: Yay! Top of the death page!
Also have to admit that since I went straight to the discussion thread, the title made me think of that horrible song about "doing it like they do on the Discovery Channel"
