I laughed heartily, and set off my roommates dog barking, which in turn provoked (sound interpretation here) him to get up, trip over the dog, and knock something over. Swearing at the dog. At 1:37 am.

Thanks XKCD! Wouldn't have it any other way, I mean, how many other webcomics set off groggy, obscenity-filled Rube Goldberg machines in one's own home?

The 'joke' and 'meaning' is kind of phail for me, especially on the level that XKCD usually is. But the art in this one is FAN FRIKKEN TASTIC! Makes me want to say it's my favorite comic ever done by him... but it's not even close.

Did he change the alt-text?
It says sea now.

I don't really have much experience in this area but isn't a penis pump supposed to help against erectile dysfunction instead of enlarging your member? Well, I mean, a pump will enlarge it but not permanently... I think you get the point.

Don't want to spoil the comic but I was just wondering... :|

You know, if I were in many of your bewildered shoes, I think that I would have skipped posting on this forum and waited for Friday's to come out rather than admitting to having not understood...

Maybe not, though.

I think it's pretty, but there are better comics further down in the archives. I await Friday's comic with anticipation...

Yeah, I first thought he was referring to shoes that would make him taller. I fail, but it's okay, because a lot of other people did too.

There's something truly elegant about the juxtaposition of quite gorgeous art and a penis joke.

I approve.

Good episode, not great, but the artwork on it is quite impressive. Good for a laugh at the start of Wednesday morning.

I also seem to have a much less dirtier mind compared to my peers here on xkcd, as I saw the "drain the sea" concept first.

Just remember Randall - "It's not the size mate; it's how you use it!"

The simple penis joke works so much better with the amazing art, before reading it I had completely different expectations of the comic from the art.

And you know you need to start doing other things when the first thing you think about when water and pumps are mentioned is Dwarf Fortress.

Great comic - I, too, love the art.

The punchline reminded me of one of my Army stories - one of those great ones which you only wish Reader's Digest would publish.

I was in the middle of a "Health and Welfare" inspection of the Soldiers' rooms in the barracks - that's where we make sure they are living under healthy conditions, and take a quick peek through their stuff for contraband.

Before going into one guy's room, he said "Um, SSG Weaver - before you go through my stuff - I have this, uh, this pump thing."

I confirmed he was talking about a penis pump, and told him I expected HIM to handle it, not me. No problem - he pulled out a shoebox and I could see there wasn't any dope in it or anything.

So out of a morbid sense of curiosity, I asked if he purchased it from a store or mail-order from the back of a spank magazine.

"No," he replied, "I got it from Jones down the hall!"

Not only was he rocking a used penis pump - it turned out he was the THIRD user!!!!

Yuk.

Things you wished you never knew about barracks life ...

It took me six hours to get the penis part of the joke. Man, I was totally excited too ... I was totally going to rush over here and be all like HAH I BET HE'S TALKING ABOUT HIS PENIS and then I realized everyone else already got it within a couple minutes :-/

When I got to the "I should get one of those pumps," line, I thought for a time it was a joke about some sort of water pump (for 0.68 seconds to be exact) , but then realized the comment's phallic nature before reading the alt-text. It seemed like a more clever joke when it's up to you to decide which meaning is intended, without the alt-text at all.

I'm not sure I get the alt-text. Is it meant literally, or is there some innuendo I'm missing?

Got the pump line pretty quick...took me a while to figure out why you ladies were talking about shoes, though.

I must admit I went to the penis joke almost instantly.

Silly Randell, to drain the ocean all you need to do is find the plug and pull it.

The .alt-text is there to ensure that everyone gets the "true" meaning of the primary punchline.

"Everyone" of course defined as that undefinable portion of society with their minds in the gutter - AKA "people like me."

But Randall, what will you do with all that water when you drain the sea? You'll only be creating a new sea somewhere else.

The funny thing is, it sounds like those of us who got the primary joke right away were then totally confused by the alt text. I was trying to figure out some drain the lizard/drain the sea connection, gave up, and had to come here to get the alt text explained to me.

I don't think of myself as having a dirty mind, but I got the intended message immediately. I think the phrase "one of those pumps," as opposed to "a pump," is what led me to the imprurient conclusion.

Also, does anyone else see anything phallic in the moon + reflection? As George Carlin might say, sometimes a reflection is just a reflection, but sometimes it's a big luminescent **ck.

sje46's post above seems to have been overlooked, so I'll bring it up again: Has the title-text been changed? The alternative would be a case of sloppy transcription in the original post, and I'm certainly hoping it's not that.

Also, this may be nitpicky, but when can we stop using the misnomer "alt-text"? Randall properly calls it "title-text" in a recent comic, and as the source shows, the alt-text is actually "The Sea":

Code: Select all

<img src="http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/the_sea.png" title="And then a second one, to drain the sea." alt="The Sea" />

This is utterly "Deep thoughts by Jack Handy" (for those youngin's out there, that was a SNL bit back in the '90s. You know, before you were born.) Especially if you include the alt. text.
