0454: "Rewiring"

Alt text: My friend Elizabeth tried to mail one end of the cable to me and thread the mail system.

Took me a while to get it, but when I did I giggled. It's very random.

Edit: I would've liked it more if the implication was that they were on opposite sides of the world. Although, I guess ethernet cables don't come in those kinds of lengths

I hate to say it, but mistakes were made.

That's not an upgrade. All they're doing is encapsulating one layer 1 protocol in another, like a hardware-level VPN.

There's gotta be something here about the male inserting and the female receiving, either a crude joke or a feminist analysis.

Wouldent it be easier to scan the cable and send it as an attachment? Then you could use the attachment to attach both ends of the cable to their respective boxes.

Oh wait... you couldent email it, cause the network is off. But you could save the email to a disk and fax that.

I've often considered email as my first thought when trying to figure out how to get a physical object from point A to point B... most of the time though, I realise that this is a silly idea before I actually suggest it to the person at point A.

Only most of the time.

I've cabled a few houses in my time. At first I thought they were using the POTS cable as a draw wire to pull through an ethernet cable

This is a much better idea, but not as functional as my ethernet access at universitty. See, I shared mine with a guy who lived in the building opposite (14 feet) so we slung a long cable between our windows.

The cable doubled up as an impromptu washing line, although it couldn't handle bedsheets. ("My network's gone down to a code 3-15. That's a duvet-related incident")

A while back, my sister asked me about getting a wireless router for their house. And my response, having seen the house before the actual walls were put in, was "Why would you want that? You have Cat 5 running through the entire house." (And they do. It's a star with the center in some room down in the basement. Pretty surprising, I can't possibly imagine that they actually asked for it.)

Then I realised that going down that road would mean a lot of explaining and installing outlets, on my part. So I quickly backtracked and told her that wireless is The Way(tm).

Problems with this comic:
1) The fax machine should not be labelled 'fax'.
2) Instead of a 'zzz zzz' sound, the fax machine should make a 'fax fax' sound.

And now for something completely different:

As it stands, my paper cup modem and string connection is working ok for now.

I don't know Munroe...you're stretching for a joke here, and the middle pannel was just confusing. It looks like it's inside, because there's a potted plant, but then outside because of the outside door light.

Yeah... such is life (been there man). I don't turn into a fan boy, I just end up looking like a jerk. It's very strange. I could almost imagine Niles Crane doing something similar but more over the top - meeting some famous opera singer or some such he admires and insulting a performance of theirs in an attempt to make conversation, and then being very distraught about his behavior, getting a second chance to talk to her, and then in an attempt to explain his earlier behavior he suggests that "we all have our bad days" and ends up insulting her again when he oh...suggests she had a hang over during a certain interview he saw of hers or some such.

On an almost unrelated note, has anyone else sent loop faxes to a fax spammer, when they existed?
I assume it's hardly even possible with modern fax machines/speeds. But there was a time when you could tape two papers together and feed them to the fax machine, then quickly tape them together at the other end once they got halfway through the machine and it was waiting for ACK from the other end. Sometimes, it could go on for hours until they ran out of paper at the other end. Ah, those were the days.

To stay almost on topic, I wonder how long would it take to exceed the max cable length if you loop fax an ethernet cable?

Love the comic, but this is awful. And to the poster who compared it to Calvin & Hobbes...that's simply the best comic strip, and nothing comes close.
