alt-text: And nothing for 'I'm glad I saw Epic Movie.'

As they say, no one ever says on their deathbed, "I wish I had spent more time at the office" or "Why did we have all these children?"

"Why did we have all these children" is less of a deathbed thing to say and more of an all the time thing to say.

On an even more basic level, check out the google results for "I should have" vs "I shouldn't have".

I learned years ago that if I'm torn between action and inaction, I'm much more likely to regret inaction. This comic is a great way to express that principle. Kudos Randall!

I so want my last words to be "Why did I waste so much time with <insert name of family member closest to deathbed>, when I could've been working?"... just for the look on their face.

(No, not really.)

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}
[he/him/his]

sometimes I think to myself.. why did I bother to partition my hard drive to install linux when I should have just said screw windows all together.. then I remember.. guitar hero. but I think I can run guitar hero out of linux by running a virtual machine using windows in linux.. so why DID I bother to keep windows? questions questions.
Ubuntu makes me happy, like deep down inside happy, as in I don't even need porn anymore, I just need to see that funky little ubuntu logo and I'm good. Thanks for asking...

It's actually kind of surprising, given how many regrets are based not on failure to act but rather mistakes.

Maybe it's just people express things more in the positive than the negative:

"I shouldn't have slept with her" vs. "I should have realized she was a dude"

Thanks Randall. You have cheered up what was a pretty gloomy day.

I have 3 people I should've kissed, and one 1 I shouldn't have.

However, I'm sure there are a fair number of people out there going, "I'm glad that loser didn't try to kiss me."

Sometimes trying to avoid regret is selfish.

I fully expect to find over 50 results on Google for "I'm glad I saw Epic Movie" within 24 hours. I also expect the number of results for "I shouldn't have..." to go up.
xkcd comics have a way of messing with the internet.

Also, there's really no results for "I'm glad I saw [any movie]".

It's a cute comic anyway.

I tried this on a Google Fight to get a graphic representation. When I went to check recent fights, I saw two other "I should/shouldn't have" fights.

I saw that. The irony is that, even if a couple of people who were planning to rent Epic Movie may change their minds because it's not cool enough for Randall Munroe, there are bound to be a far greater number who are reminded that they had been meaning to see it, or get curious, train-wreck style, and go rent the movie this week (or add it to their queue--I guess I'm still stuck in 2007).

EDIT: Already up to six hits (as of 1 hour post-update). . . and here goes the Wikipedia page too.

I tend not to look back on things and I say I should have done this or should not have done that. Regret is a silly concept in my opinion. Seriously, what does anyone get out of wishing they had or hadn't done a certain thing? Nothing. There is no way to change the past so why bother? I just see all life as a learning experience. Maybe snorting a bunch of cocaine was a bad idea, but hell, what's done is done.

This is not to say I didn't appreciate the comic, which in fact was pretty funny.

Unfortunately there was a single google result (before XKCD and its mirrors hit) for "I'm glad I saw Epic Movie":
http://thedailyhfs.com/2008/08/04/im-glad-i-saw-epic-movie/

Edit: my bad; i didn't notice the timestamp, and no its not spam, i just never post on this bluddy forum. <-- Bad with foruming.

But not before the comic was posted--hence the reference to "whoring for traffic". Which apparently is working.

Fortune has always favored the bold. Someone once said although I can't remember whom, "Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.” It is sooo true.

I don't see anything there directly related to xkcd. I looked at the edits from the time the comic was posted, and other than a stupid redirection they all seemed to be reasonable. And I didn't see any "In Popular Culture" sections or xkcd references there.

It does look like a few (probable) xkcd readers decided to improve the article (e.g. rewriting a sentence for clarity). But that's fine, as long as it's not vandalism in the guise of improvement.

Of course, I'm sure someone's going to deliberately vandalise it now. If this is you, I want you to know that you are a loser. :x

I personally never understand Randalls 'Google Result' numbers...

If I google 'I shouldn't have kissed her.' I get...

Results 1 - 10 of about 9,440,000

Nowhere near 10,230...

cool comics.I like the graphs and how they mess with traffic.
I've said/posted similar things.
And there's definitely more in the "should have" column.
like they said, it's not the things youdo, but the things you don't do that you regret.
There's quite afew boys I've kissed whom I didn't particularly liked. I don't so much regret it,cause it was fun, and there's a lot more with whom nothing happened and with those one always wonders "what if?"
it's idle speculation, but I do it anyways.

but I have to say,if I went back in time,I wouldn't change that many things.

I should clarify: fifty attempts to display it in a way that seems natural. That is, not in a discussion of the comic (such as this thread), a re-displaying of the comic (in this thread or on a mirror), and not directly followed by a sentence about generating pageviews.

Edit:

My guess is that he used quotes and you didn't.
I personally get fewer results when I search with quotes, but Personalized Search might be causing the difference.

Two things that strike me about this comic are:
a) It may not reflect on what people regret the most so much as what people do the most (ie. bloggers and forum posters are chickens and more often aren't game to kiss whoever)
b) The people saying "shouldn't" know what the outcome of trying to kiss whoever was, while the people saying "should" remain [optimistically] ignorant

I loved it though, great comic ^^

This is like "It's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all." high tech version.

In any case, I try to regret nothing. Lotsa people think I'm a bit crazy, but I want to have no regrets. Life is too short, you know.

Contra GodShapedBullets comment, googling "I'm glad I saw" does turn up several examples of pages saying "I'm glad I saw [some movie]". The first example is actually "I'm glad I saw "Saw."" Another is "I'm glad I saw Earthlings." However, most movies that I thought to try did indeed turn up 0 hits for "I'm glad I saw [some movie]."

I would also like to note that more than 50% of the hits for "I should have kissed her/him" are hits for the book "I Should Have Kissed Her More" by Alexander King. Excluding "Alexander King", "King, Alexander", "King, Al", "King, A" for the search cuts the hits down from 8,130 to 2,420 (with another 2,090 hits for "I should have kissed him"). Interesting that removing the hits for the book actually brings the gender ration much closer to parity.

I've been places, seen things, met people throughout my life that my younger self never even imagined I'd do.

So when the time comes for me to move on to some other Great Experiment, the words you're least likely to hear me say will be "I should have tried so much harder to look for a nice wife, a house with a mortgage and a cushy, paying job in a nice office."

42 hits for Epic Movie. Which is actually slightly epic.

I don't exactly know how he gets his numbers either. I must be missing something. With quotes for both a "him" and a "her" I'm usually about 10% short of his numbers.

Still. Searching: "I should have kissed her" comes up with an epic movie in the top 10.

I find Randall's power disturbing.
